Thanks for a good lecture :) I have a question. (I'm an EFL learner.) I think "My teacher is the best" is qualified by the following explanation "she always helps me". I see cause&effect relation b/w them. Or maybe the latter is a paraphrase of the former in light of the supposition that being a good teacher is being helpful for students. Among the colon examples, "She was feeling really down last week" is also given grounds by the following statement "she had failed her exam and lost her job." It seems that in both cases the former is a general idea that is supported by the latter, which is more specific. Could you give me more detailed explanations on when to use semi-colons, please? Thanks in advance :)

Question in the book of Romans chapter 8 verse 17 there's a semicolon would that be saying that you're only a joint heir only if you suffer with him which is living out of Paul's doctrine
@11stemgen1dinoeldinjr.d.de83 жыл бұрын
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. I think, this is connected to: 2 Timothy 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: The Context was about a Christians reign at the Millennium, the Colon introduced this "if we deny him, he also will deny us: ". But notice what was before the Colon, it is about the reign of a Christian at the Millennium. Because of this the whole verse is about a Christians reign. A Christians reign is conditional, the word "if" gives a condition: if you suffer for him. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmbShGyefd6tqNk

I have to deal with sentences like these: "THE EARLIEST PRODUCT OF RATIONALISM in the so-called 'scientific' field was Cartesian mechanism; materialism was not due to appear until later, for as explained elsewhere, the word and the thing itself are not actually met with earlier than the eighteenth century; besides, whatever may have been the intentions of Descartes himself (and it is in fact possible, by pursuing to the end the logical consequences of his ideas, to extract from them theories that are mutually very contradictory), there is nonetheless a direct filiation between mechanism and materialism. In this connection it is useful to recall that, although the ancient atomistic conceptions such as those of Democritus and especially of Epicurus can be qualified as mechanistic, these two being the only 'precursors' from the ancient world whom the moderns can with any justification claim as their own in this field, their conceptions are often wrongly looked upon as the earliest form of materialism: for materialism implies above all the modern physicist's notion of 'matter', and at that time this notion was still a long way from having come to birth. The truth is that materialism merely represents one of the two halves of Cartesian dualism, the half to which its author had applied the mechanistic conception; it was sufficient thereafter to ignore or to deny the remaining half, or what comes to the same thing, to claim to bring the whole of reality into the first half, in order to arrive quite naturally at materialism"...and the like. It's quite hard. I guess I have to study grammar in detail first; there's no easy way around it. The slightest error in usage would change the tone of a sentence.

Here's a question for ya! In this passage, would the punctuation after 'football' be a colon or a semicolon? And would the punctuation after 'stretching' be a semicolon or a comma? As a preschooler and early grade-schooler, my parents tried to get me to play almost every sport except for football; my team won a little league baseball championship, but I didn’t like it; I played a season of basketball in which I don’t think I scored a single point; I quit after the first day of both soccer and karate, because I didn’t have the fortitude to withstand their respective running and stretching, etc. I would think that the one after 'football' would be a colon, but there were other sports not mentioned in the list, so to me, that would mean a colon is not appropriate. As for the one after 'stretching,' it seems unnecessary to use a semicolon to introduce 'etc.' Would you agree? All helps is appreciated! :)

I think that the punctuation after football should actually be a period instead of a semicolon, but if you insist I think it would be better to use be a colon instead of a semicolon. I think the comma after the word stretching is fine, however I do think that in that section you should have phrased it as running, stretching, etc. I also think that sentence might be a bit long, so maybe it would've been better to split it up into several sentences. I would have written it like this: As a preschoooler and early grade-schooler, my parents tried to get me to play almost every sport except for football. My team won a little league baseball championship, but I didn't enjoy playing. I played a season of basketball in which I don't think I scored a single point. I quit after the first day of both soccer and karate; I didn't have the fortitude to withstand their respective running, stretching, etc.
