I'm an older, recreational mountain biker, and prefer more gently rolling terrain to steep climbs and drops. I also live in a hilly city, where you're constantly changing from riding uphill to downhill and back again. I had a dropper post installed on my hardtail last fall, and it's made riding so much easier, especially on my aging knees. The old seatpost could only be raised and lowered by dismounting and then wrestling with the clamp. Rather than deal with that, I used to split the difference and ride with the seat about halfway up, which was a bit too low for climbing comfortably, and a bit too high for descending. The dropper post is a true game changer for me. I can go from downhill to uphill smoothly and efficiently, without missing a pedal stroke.

The humble dropper post has gotta be wayyyyy up the list of "things that make bikes awesome". They're so good I stuck one in my little shredders 20" hardtail. Makes an absolute world of difference for them. MVDP should watch and rewatch the footage of Jolanda attacking the Izu course. Technical perfection and not a single face full of grass to be seen.

Carrera Fury 2021- dropper post ready? No, dropper included standard. That's some nice value for a £650 bike. I'm pushing 60 and getting on a bit, so it's nice not to have to lift my leg over the high saddle position. Dismounting is so much easier too. I like to rub the actuator on those gnarly climbs. It means you have an emergency option instead of putting a foot down straight away. Best bike accessory, defo.

I'm ex motocross racer and I prefer to only drop mine 1/2 to maybe 2/3 down, I'm 6'2" and I like to have the seat there to push against my leg like how I'd grip my moto, I'm tall enough it never gets in the way. I'll drop it 100% for super tech but not anything with speed. Just me do what makes you comfortable 🤙

My new ebike there came with 150mm Fox transfer I think it's annoying as heck trying to get it back to that good ride high again after been dropped, it takes a few shots faffing around with it to get it back to the hight I feel best with it at! It would be great if they designed something for the lever like a limit screw so can be set to rise to your best comfortable leg position everytime!

MVDP didn't know the drop was there, he was expecting a ramp... maybe the dropper would have helped, maybe we wouldn't have used it since he was expecting the said ramp to exist... Anyway, how smooth are dropper posts supposed to be? My lever is super rough.

If you ride in any mountain area you can not live without it. It's too dangerous to go down even little slopes with your seat high up in pedal position. A real game changer, and must have on your bike. The drop of the seat doesn't have to be huge, like 125 or 150mm is fine.

@@Jonas_B. Most people don't need tire inserts, but if you're a really aggressive rider, the inserts will prevent you from dinging your rims. They can also provide additional bump absorption.

You don't need to be rich to run a dropper. I have a cheap and ... well actually not all that nasty.. Zoom Tequila 100mm (it was actually the only thing sub $400 NZD that fitted my Giant Faith 2010. And it was about $100 NZD delivered. Ok it's a glorified office chair mechanism, but has near no rotational slop... and works. It's a little sticky in the drop (I load the front of the seat and down it goes) and the top activation model can get a little sticky (I made a video on how to fix that) but it is several thousand % better than riding with a fixed seat. I still think it's about time Seats got re-invented.. they have been basically the same shape since the 1860's but the bikes and the use thereof have changed radically... I mean if you want separation from the seat on a downhill bike, that stupid front bit just keeps getting in the way, especially when shifting off the side. And instead of a seat post... why not hinge it from the stem. Then a cheap mechnisim like a zoom actuator could fit and give full travel even in a short post position... in fact you could have a way lower top bar as most are only that high to support the seat post... The top of my Faith could drop over 100mm to the top of the rear suspension!.

Vanderpool believed the ramp that was in practice and in the women's race was still there, why would they change the course they practiced on? A downhill race skier knows the longer he's in the air, the slower his time will be. He's so lucky he didn't put both hands strait out in front of him, he instead tucked one shoulder under himself.

I dont mind using the quick release clamp, as I have been doing for 33 years. We learnt to ride long posts and jump/tech stuff with them. I see some pro marathoners still on rigid posts too. If I was racing Enduro or XC obviously YES, as I have used dropper before, but now at my age 49 Im in no hurry and It really doesn´t bother me doing it manually and save the weight.

Same age here, and sounds like similar learning with fixed posts. However, my experience with droppers has improved my riding immensely. I now won't ride a bike without one, unless its a jump bike with the seat slammed all the way down or a road bike. Could be that I'm not as agile as you (old worn out joints from too many crashes 🤕)

Stopping to adjust the seat works fine if you have long, predicable stretches going up and down, but on my local trails, the undulating terrain makes a dropper post almost a necessity, otherwise you would be stopping every few minutes to raise or lower the seat.

My new bike will be the first time ive had one, and admittedly, I'm curious to see if they're worth the hype. I can definitely see how they are convenient, since I typically ride with a high post and sacrifice a little on the downs. And in groups, I don't really have time to fuss with getting the post back to my preferred height since locals like to head straight back up for the next lap.
