If you have a Microsoft word document somewhere in the files app on your Chromebook, you should be able to copy it onto the flash drive like you would with any other type of file. But, if the document is in Google Docs or in the Word online website or something like that, it will be slightly more complicated because you'll need to download it first. If you could let me know where the document is, I will be able to provide more specific instructions.

If you have an external hard drive that can physically plug into a USB port, that should work fine just like using a USB. I'm not sure about an iPhone, I don't have one so I couldn't test it, but you could certainly plug it in and give it a try. But I do know from plugging other people's iPhones into Windows computers in the past, you will need to unlock the phone when you plug it in because sometimes if the phone is locked it won't communicate with other devices. And once you plug it in, there might be a message on the phone screen asking if you want to allow this device to access files or something like that, and you'll need to allow that on the phone before it will work.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any special way to find it in the files app, but if it is still connected it should still show up in that left hand menu somewhere. If you really can't find it, I think the only option is to pull it out and plug it back in again. I know it's a bit scary with the warning message that pops up when you do this, but really as long as you're not copying anything to or from the flash drive at the very moment you pull it out, it should be pretty safe.

Sorry, but as far as I know I don't think there's anything you can do to stop a USB drive from being read only via a Chromebook. If you have a Windows computer available to you, you might be able to plug it into that and use one of the suggestions in this article to make it stop being read only: www.diskpart.com/articles/usb-drive-read-only-7201.html And then if one of those things works, you would then be able to use it with your Chromebook just like normal and it wouldn't be read only. But I really don't think there's anything you can do directly from a Chromebook that would fix this.

Sorry, I've never come across this before, so I don't know a lot about it. But I think your best bet is to try plugging the flash drive into a Windows or Mac computer, and hopefully it will work and you'll be able to transfer all the files onto that computer. Then, you can plug the flash drive into your Chromebook, and let it format the drive, then with the drive formatted correctly, you can connect it to the other computer, put the important files back on the flash drive, and then it should work on your Chromebook. Hopefully, you have an old Windows or Mac computer or are able to borrow one or something. I'm assuming the flash drive is just formatted in a format that's not supported by Chrome OS, but is supported by Windows or Mac. If that's the case, this should work. But it's also possible that the flash drive could actually be corrupted or encrypted or something. In which case your only hope is probably going to be taking it to a computer repair store and see if there's anything they can do. I could be way off because I don't know that much about formatting drives, but that's what I'd do anyway.

You can't install drivers on a Chromebook so that's not an option, but I don't think you need to buy a specific USB either, every USB I've ever tried has worked flawlessly. I've started a video diary on Chromebook and bought a SanDisk flash drive. When I plugged it into the Chromebook a message popped up saying it was not compatible with Chromebook. However, I did discover that I can move videos onto it. I went into my 'Camera' file and dragged videos to the flash drive and thought it worked great. However, when I deleted the video from Chromebook, the video also was deleted from the flash drive so I had to restore the video on my Chromebook. Hopefully if you manually open the files app the flash drive will be showing up in the bottom left hand corner and you can just click on it to open it. If that's the case, I'm not sure why it didn't pop up for you, but it should still work anyway. But if you open the Files app and the flash drive isn't showing there at all, you might just need to unplug the flash drive and plug it back in again or possibly even restart your Chromebook. Then, hopefully, it will work like normal. But if it still isn't working after all that, my best guess would be that there is something wrong with the flash drive or the USB port on your Chromebook. Or perhaps the flash drive isn't compatible with Chrome OS. But hopefully one of the first two options works.

It might just be that the notification didn't appear for some reason, you could try opening the files app, and see if the flash drive shows up in the left hand menu. But if the flash drive doesn't show up there, that will mean the flash drive isn't connected properly. You could try unplugging it and plugging it back in, plugging it into a different port on your Chromebook (if possible), or if you are using an adapter to plug it in, there might be something wrong with the adapter, so you could try a different adapter. Or, you might just need to restart your Chromebook. Other than that, it could be a faulty flash drive, that just doesn't work for some reason, and in that case, there wouldn't be much you could do about it.

You should just be able to click and drag the courses onto the flash drive just like any other file the way I show in this video, but if there are a lot of videos in the course and the videos are high resolution, you're probably going to need quite a large flash drive to fit them all on there. I don't really have specific flash drives that I recommend because all the brands are fairly similar and it really depends on how much space and speed you need, but for storing a course on there, one like this 256GB one from SanDisk is probably the best option: amzn.to/3ge9HJp The smaller variations might be big enough, but if you're not sure how big the course is it's probably safest to go with this big one. You kind of could, but the difficulty would be what sort of app you would use to access and work with the files. If you are happy with plain text files (meaning files that have no formatting like bolding, color, font, etc), you could use .txt files and quite easily save them to a flash drive and completely work with them offline. Here's a link to a video on how to create and use .txt files on a Chromebook: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWm3Y4NsabmUisk But if you want to create proper documents with formatting and everything, I think the only simple way to do that would be to create the documents in Google Docs, then download the document from Google Docs as a word document by clicking on file, hovering over download, and clicking on Word Document and then save the word document to the flash drive. And then you could delete the document from Google Docs if you want. And you should then be able to edit and view the downloaded document by double clicking on it in the Files app to open it in Chrome OS's fairly basic but functional built-in word editing app. The other way you could do it is by using some sort of Linux document editing app, but that's quite complex to install and it's even more complex to make Linux apps be able to access a flash drive, so I probably wouldn't recommend that route. But anyway, hopefully this helps.

I'm guessing that's happening because there's a fairly obscure type of file on the flash drive that you're trying to open. And Chrome OS can't open that type of file. If you could let me know what type of file it is, I might be able to recommend an app that could open it. The file type should be at the end of the file name like filename.jpg or filename.pdf, etc.

Sorry but there are really too many possible issues for me to give you a real answer. It could be some kind of incompatibility issue, a file corruption, a fault with the flash drive, or something else entirely. You could try simply unplugging the flash drive and plugging it back in, and that might fix it if it was just some kind of glitch. Or, if you Google the issue and spend a few hours looking through all the different forums and everything, you might find a suggestion that solves the problem. But personally, I would just copy all the files on the flash drive to the Chromebook, then get a new flash drive and put the files on there.

Unfortunately Chrome OS often seems to struggle to play a lot of video formats. It's quite annoying and I've never really found a good solution. You could try uploading it to a file conversion website like cloud convert, but they often have file size restrictions which is problematic for videos.

You have shown how to download RTF files in chrome docs, but I wanted to convert them to pdf files in their original location so that I can send them to recipients in a single click . Is it possible?

Sorry, but I don't think that's quite possible, you could convert RTF files to PDF files with the help of a website called online-convert.com, and then you could save the PDFs to the flash drive, but as far as I know there is no way to convert them in their location like that.

How do I copy and paste a KZbin LINK into a flash drive folder on a Chromebook? Drag and drop does not appear to work like on a PC.

Unfortunately Chrome OS doesn't support having a link as a file like Windows does. So your best bet is going to be to copy and paste the link into some sort of text file and then save the text file to the flash drive. The most straightforward way to do that is probably to create a .txt file on the flash drive and paste the link in there. I have a video on how to create .txt files here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWm3Y4NsabmUisk Or, you could paste the link into a Google Doc, download the Google Doc as a Word Doc, and then save the Word Doc to the flash drive. This way is probably more time-consuming, but if you prefer it over a .txt file it could be an option. To download the Word Doc as a Google Doc as a Word Doc, click "File", then hover over "Download", then click "Microsoft Word". Hope this helps.

About .docx or .odt (word/libreoffice) documents, can we open them, modify them, save them again on the flash drive without needing to be connected to the internet ? And can we read video files, music that are on the flah drive ? Can you do a video about this ?

You can open Word docs from a flash drive, edit them, and save them back to the flash drive just like I show in the other video, and that would all work without internet. And you can watch video files and listen to music files from the flash drive without internet just by double clicking on them. But sadly .odt files are not really compatible with Chrome OS, so the only way to open one of those on a Chromebook would be to upload it to Google Docs, and that would require internet.

That's a shame, are you sure you copied the videos to your Chromebook before you ejected the USB? And if so, would you mind letting me know where on your Chromebook you copied the videos to? Eg: somewhere in Google Drive, Downloads, My Files, etc.

That's strange. You could try unplugging the flash drive and plugging it back in, or possibly even restarting your Chromebook. But if none of that helps, unfortunatly it sounds like there might be something wrong with your flash drive. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have a noob problem: i have a lot of old files like pictures, pdfs, videos, music on an old external hdd that is somewhat organised in folders. i want to access and see what's for keeping, what's to be deleted, and upload to a cloud. my old laptop is really slow and I'm thinkin about converting it to a chromebook but i'm not sure i can sort all my old files the way i used to on a pc. i used to have 2 or more folders open at a time and drag and drop files to sort them. is this do-able with chromeOS?

Yes, you can certainly do that on a Chromebook. The files app looks a bit different and some of the buttons are in different places, but the way it works overall is pretty similar to Windows or Mac.

Timmy i have an school chromebook and it is very limited because it has an adminstrator that is not me, blocking most of the programs, i am suposed to give back the laptop to the school at the end of the year, how can i save all the sistem settings on a USB flash drive, so i can factory reset the device and at the end of the year boot back the same system and not get prejudicated by that action ?
