I carry a modfied Crunch multool, cause it can do SO much more than any knife. It's NOW got 2 carbon steel file blades (one triangular) and a normal, carbon steel knife blade. I carry 3 different types of saw blade, to be held in the vise grip of the crunch. I also carry just the blade of a Cold steel shovel, IN an an hour, I can make whatever length or confuration of handle I need for it and then REALLY get some work done. Chopping is dangerous, noisy and inefficient, so I use the saws whenever possible. I split wood by batoning wooden wedges into saw kerfs. I'm not risking my knife blade by beating on it. The normal handle for the shovel gets a hatchet-cross section ground into it. This greatly reduces the stress on my hands, wrists and forearms when I chop with it and it also increases the accuracy of my strikes

Justin, I completely appreciate the way you worked that piece of wood. Most important, you didn’t beat the heck out of your knife with the mallet. just tap tap tap and voila. Taking the time to process the wood and using two different knives… well done. Man thank you for showing how sometimes, most times, the ferro rod takes more than one or a few strikes to catch the bundle. This is another excellent video on how to get it done. Great job Justin.

I appreciate your feedback about the entire process. I’ve been making shorts content for almost a year and slowing down on these long form videos has been a breath of fresh air when editing. I’ve decided to leave in way more content and not worry about the video length. And you’re right about the ferro rod. Definitely takes patience sometimes. 🤝🏼🤝🏼🤝🏼

Great video Justin. I learned that when batoning wood with a folder, don't lock the blade out, leave it at a 90% so you don't break the locking mechanism. Then baton wooden wedges to finish. I think it was either Felix Immler or Clay Hayes I got that from. That is an expensive knife to break. Anyway, I love your videos and am a subscriber, thanks and keep em commin

me, I have a keychain ferrro rod, a wallet freznel lense, but I also carry 2 lights, (one of them a peanut lighter) and a UCO candle, with beeswax candle. and duct tape. So I never have problems getting a fire going There's no point in starting a fire out in the rain. First you have to find, built or erect the shelter that you carry. If it's cold, you'd BETTER have the clothing/shelter items that keep you warm and dry and just have the fire as an adjunct item. It takes 3 fires around you and a membrane over you to provide real warmth and protection and you have to know to use a Siberian fire lay. It wont be put out by rain and it projects all of its heat in one direction, twice as far as does a normal fire. So the Siberians can sit out in the rain, no danger to your tarp, while you're under the tarp/canopy, dry and warm Search yt for the Siberian fire lay and the alternative Swedish fire torch. The swede is what you use to ignite the Siberian, if all is wet. Both fire types will burn green, wet wood. The only dry wood needed is the shavings inside of the empty center of the 4 log Swede and the scrapings at one end of those shavings. Set the Swede up on 2-3 sticks or stones, so that air can get under it. Wear gloves or use debris to swing the Swede around, once you get one end burning, until you have flames coming out of both ends of the bundle. YOu dont have to have 8 ft long, 8" OD logs for a Siberian. 4 ft long and 4" OD will suffice. Drive 4 stakes and stack 3 such logs between the stakes, forming a "wall". have 1 ft of the ends of the burn logs protrude over this wall at 90 degrees. Youi dont want your wall to burn, so plaster the fire side of the wall with a 3" thick layer of mud /Fires are a pita, man.

@@justinuriahphoto PIne and birch are very rare here, ditto cedar. We have cottonwood willow. sycamore and scrub oak. The only trees are on flood-plains, so you can't really count on any long term shelter here. There's many parts of the US that are to be just passed-over, not settled-upon.

I have the pm2 in 20cv. Not sure how good it is in comparison. It does hold an edge well. Does the steel type matter for normal usage or is it better to get a particular steel for pocket knife bushcrafting?

I’ve never liked the looks of spyderco knives. To me they’re just plain butt ugly and high priced. I prefer Victorinox or Case. But to each his own !😊
