Thank so much for this video! Why did you choose synthetic oil?
@TheFosterJourney4 жыл бұрын
The manual gives a large selection of oil options...they're all based on the temperature I expect to sail in.

The pump i bought was also pretty small, it had two tubes, the small one wouldnt go down the dipstick so i tried the larger one over the dipstick and was able to use suction to get the oil out. Thanks for sharing the video and your blog entry with full steps!

Yeah, this hand pump is a last resort for oil changes, we now have the vacuum pump - it's awesome! amzn.to/3P5zfZa

Just check your engine manual. Some older marine diesels should only have mineral oil. Synthetic oil can dissolve the gaskets in older engines. Also, I know there is not much tidal range around there, but will the tide be running with you or against you?
@TheFosterJourney4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about mineral oil. The manual gave a range of oils to choose from, and this one has been used for years based on service records I inherited. Records are so valuable! ...yes, we'll be heading out just before the tide ebbs. The wind on the other hand, will be a bit in our face.

@@TheFosterJourney - close hauled is a good point of sail for Bermuda Sloops. Once you get everything sheeted in she will cut the water like a knife. Good news about the oil 👍 I am glad that is not a problem. Actually, we need to do our oil.... 😄😄

Thanks for sharing your oil change and I was glad to see the larger hose worked out for you. That map of the Gulf looked complicated! Glad you guys know how to read them. What did Olivia make for dessert? Happy sails!

The map can be tricky to read at first.

Did you run the engine before pumping oil out? If you run the engine, the oil will be thinner and easier to pump out.
@TheFosterJourney4 жыл бұрын
Funny thing...we were half way through and stopped and said, "We forgot to run it!" Won't forget next time 👍

The oil dip stick tube does not reach to the bottom of the oil pan. Sucking on the oil dip stick tube will not remove all the oil out of the engine, so you are diluting dirty contaminated oil with the new oil and not putting fresh oil in the engine. The owners manual is available online, and it gives specifics on how to change oil. The larger pumps with a big reservoir actually work very well because you pump them several times and they create a vacuum and pull the oil out of the engine. you only have to pump them a few times a minute to keep the vacuum up and they pull the oil out at a good rate. the smaller tube you put down the dip stick tube reaches the bottom of the oil pan and removes a lot more oil than the way you did it. What does Yanmar say for how much oil the engine should hold at oil change with a filter? I bet you left a Quart or two in the engine doing it the way you did it.

Thanks for the tips 👍 I'll double check the manual to ensure we got it all
