These, and similar products, are fine and they do work. However, I find that an 8" pair of hemostats work just as well and are cheaper than a lot of the special purpose "Hook Removal" tools. Plus, hemostats prove very useful for many other purposes.

I have this tool but sometimes when you gut hook a fish the best option is to cut your line nd using pliers pull the hook back out through the belly and feed it straight through and it will come out without any issue. This also applies to the rare eye hooking or a stubborn hook in the cheek plate. The barb can make it near impossible to remove without causing further damage to the fish.
