A shot trainer is an amazing tool that can help you improve your release and clean up your execution. It's a key weapon in your training toolbox and you should use it.
Today I show how you can setup your shot trainer probably and adjust it to make sure it's the right length for you. I also demonstrate how you can use it to improve your release.
These same instructions apply if you use a formaster, too.
Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

I prefer the origanal Formaster although with a cord replacing the bungee strap. For any readers of this, the shot trainer is a copy of the Formaster after the patent ran out plus some updates. They're also really easy to make.

It's easy to make your own. A few vinyl straps and some 550 cord and get to training.

I think that it could be used with libms of 4 to 8 pound less that your normal draw weight in order to maintain the usual volume of arrows.

Any tips for using this with barebow? I don't use it nearly as much as I should because the strap is really rough on my face with the higher barebow anchor.

Hmmm, that's a good question. I think the only option may be to do it with your anchor closer to a recurve position unfortunately...definitely don't do it if the strap hits your face

Online Archery Academy someone suggested that I pad the strap, I did that and it works pretty well now

I have seen this used with a stretch band replacing the cord (on a triple trouble video I think). This cushions your draw shoulder and behaves more like your normal release so you can still come back on your follow through. It could still train for a snappier release depending on the strength of the band Also Ashe, is there an easy way to match your draw length with this apart from using an arrow and clicker? I have used one with an arrow and it goes a few metres which is fine on the range but less good in the house.

Great question! The way I like to do this is to hang a towel or some piece of clothing (I guess something you don't like too much!) and shoot at that. The arrow just hits it and falls to the floor :)

What percentage of arrows would you advise to shot through the shot trainer for someone who has not used one before?

does it feel like your string goes to left from your chin after release instead of straight? is this normal or does it mean there's something wrong with my draw alignment?

Thanks for the warning ……it’s why I have a set of 18, 28, 32, 38, 42lb limbs (all were bought used, not made of money) I shot 200 arrows at 32lb in a single session. I think I can handle 100-300 Shot Trainer at 18lb😂😂😂.

Hey Ashe! Can you please elaborate about the long-term effects of using a shot trainer? For instance, let's say I shoot 120 arrows per training session and now I go for 30 with this thing and 90 normally. As you said, first 3-4 arrows after removing it from the bow feels completely different than normal, it's like your arm is pulled back really strong. But, after a few shots this effect is gone as my muscles adjust back to normal load. So I'm not sure how this is gonna improve my expansion long-term.

Great question! It's still great to get the contrasting feeling as your body learns by having variation in your training and adapting to different stimulus. So the feeling will fade over time but what you learn from it shouldn't :)
