The problem I see most people having, including myself, is that the live AC wire indicator goes off non-stop no matter where you place the stud finder. According to my stud finder, my house was built entirely from live wire.

The information on the effect of hand changes helped me. Thanks. I've also found that another problem is old drywall. New, particularly ultralite, drywall is easier to assess. Old drywall seems to give much more variable results - at least in my experience. Also, walls that have been surface treated with drywall "mud" to make the surface variable seem to give poorer results (as might be predicted due to variable density).

Any extra tips regarding using the stud finder to find electrical wires? That's what I'm most worried about
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve honestly never used it for that. Electrical wires should be routed right in the middle of the wall and when I’m cutting drywall, I try to always go no more than 1/4 inch deeper than the drywall so it’s never been a big concern for me.

BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, and much more). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4OwqH6VgbmEh9U You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.

Are you sure it's "vertigo," or some other dizziness/imbalance disorder? I ask because you also mentioned peripheral neuropathy. A lot of doctors simply say "vertigo." Vertigo = you are spinning or your surroundings are spinning, which is only one type of dizziness, but easy to hang their hat on that because they don't know any better. Did your primary physician diagnose you, or a specialist like a neurotologist or otoneurologist? (the average ENT is completely ignorant). Do you have any diagnosed vestibular disorder? Any history with heavy metals or other toxins? Not saying you don't have "vertigo" but you could have something else. Google "CANVAS" + another key word like "balance" with it. Best of luck.

Thank you. Most critical point you make is that you want to keep your body and limbs or anything out and away from the device while calibrating, didn't realize they were calibrating in a spheroid shape like that, no ones ever said that before. I just bought my third stud finder after throwing away the previous two, unfortunately I did not catch this video first. I had already given up on the third device and just rammed screws into the wall until I hit studs. Total game changer.

I do appreciate the lesson. I'm retired and I have a disability now, but I'm going to need skills to take on home repairs myself. Short story: Someone did damage to my home a few years ago deliberately. He omitted a critical step in his work (to pocket the money, I presume), and I didn't discover what he had done to me until last year. By that time, there was water damage in more places than where he worked. He's in the wind, and I'm stuck with a house in trouble as well as a mortgage. I'm going to have to rely on You Tubers for instruction. I'm a pretty good student, though, and I'm the process of building a tool collection. I did have questions about stud finders and I guess you've now answered them. So, I'll be watching your videos, and fwiw, I think kilts are very cool.

This video is gold, I'm mounting a tv and I don't want to mess it up, but my stud finder was really lowering my confidence due to it reading really weird, but after watching this video I can now find the stud accurately and easily. Thank you for making this video, I watched others and it didn't help, the title is matched perfectly for the problem

I have had trouble with rough texture on the surface of walls and ceilings. One thing I have found helpful is to use a thin piece of cardboard, like from a cereal or snack box , beneath the stud finder... The stud finder will slide easier across the surface. As you stated though, you have to watch your hand placement. Tape can help hold the cardboard in place...

Thanks for that insight. I'm having the exact issue with a wall with a rough texture trying to find the studs accurately and the cardboard trick may just get me where I need to go 😎

Thank you for the studfinder information video. It has helped me to learn more about how a studfinder works correctly. I live in a preFab (modular) home and I haven't hung any shelves bc several items have unscrewed itself from the wall, i.e. wall hooks. This is what happened after I bought the home. So, it just seemed more hassle than not to just not try and hang anything. I hope you are able to find a great home to settle into. I just completed one year of Breast Cancer treatment, and I'm just now getting my strength and energy to support my home projects. I bought the The StudBuddy at Home Depot, and after watching your video, I feel better about using it for accuracy. Though, this tech girl would like to try to the fancier tools, but for now, simple, keepin' it simple. I hope you have more videos, as in my prefab home, the doorways and sliding glass door are difficult to find fitting parts and additions. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers ~ Peace with every step

Thanks, I’m glad it helped. My wife went through breast cancer too. They did a lump ectomy and radiation and its still painful today. If one of our cats steps on her in that area she usually freaks. Another reason I would like to skip the radiation. Take care

The center of stud indication can be different if you approach the stud from the left or the right. So I always approach the stud from two different directions and take the average of the two center indications. That always nails it. Pardon the pun.

Well you might become my best new friend for the next month. I am having my home repiped due to leaks from copper pipe in my foundation. Contractors will be cutting the drywall to run Pex to all fixtures. They’ll replace and patch drywall but not do anything with the finish. I found your channel when researching how to spray finishes. Secondly I have a saggy drywall ceiling that I can’t find the studs to resecure the drywall, so I need a stud finder. I had no clue how they operated and your video made me a lot smarter. Great visual and explanation. If I’m going to tackle all the drywall repair Im going to have to buy a compressor and sprayer, so I’ll be culling through your videos to see what a dIY guy should buy. THANK YOU!

Thank you!! I'm on a ladder trying to find the ceiling joist, my neck hurts, trying to scan over popcorn ceiling..uhh I about gave up. I would calibrate then immediately bring my left hand in to guide it over the popcorn. I switched it to deep scan and put a piece of thin cardboard over the popcorn and didn't move my hand! Found that stud! Joist, beam, rafter... I'm not sure what it's called. Piece of wood.

A cleaner method, in place of the nail trick, is to cut a reasonable length from a metal coat hanger and bend a curve into it. Then, you make a small hole in the wall to feed in your new stud probe. Keep feeding it to the sides, and keeping the point close to backside of your drywall, until you hit something. Mark or pinch your hanger in front of the hole. Pull the probe out and measure directly across the curve from your "mark" to the point of the probe. Finally, measure over from your hole to the edge of the stud you just found. You can use this method to very accurately find the edge of two studs, from one hole. A good trick if you can't trust that you are accurately using your stud finder, or don't want to fill your wall with hole. *Note - You should do your best to locate the void between the studs. That is so that you don't poke directly into a stud, on your first attempt, and still not know where its center is located.

Yes, but the drywall guys can hit near the edge of the stud and sometimes can even miss studs, so you're depending on their ability to find the studs when they did their job. Still works, but I'd rather find the edges of the stud at several heights, and then average down the middle with a level (finding a plumb line) especially if using large lag screws.

Some houses are built with air framing, or solid lumber. But that's only in my imagination, lol. Just kidding. It does take practice to hear the difference, and even after 35 years in the trades, I prefer a stud finder, but I can do it. It's just less accurate.
