Thanks. Good basic tips. The guy on a handheld radio at the end is holding his radio almost sideways. Not as you mentioned in your good video. Maybe a different video clip at the end?

What Channels other than 72 are ok to use for general purposes

Ideally, keep recreational / non-commercial ship-to-ship communication / chat to channels: 68, 69, 71, 72 and 78. They are considered "working channels".

In marine VHF radio, certain channels are designated for common use, open to boaters for various types of communication, including hailing, distress, navigation, and general conversation. The following are some of the commonly available channels and their intended uses in most regions: Distress, Safety, and Calling - Channel 16 (156.800 MHz): This is the primary hailing and distress channel. All vessels should monitor this channel when underway. Only use it for distress calls, emergencies, or initial hailing before moving to a working channel. Working Channels - Channel 9 (156.450 MHz): Often designated as an alternate hailing channel, especially in busy boating areas, to reduce congestion on Channel 16. - Channels 68, 69, 71, 72, and 78A: These channels are open for non-commercial, general conversations between recreational vessels. Port Operations and Commercial - Channel 13 (156.650 MHz): Used for bridge-to-bridge communications between vessels for safe passage in navigable waters. Commercial and larger vessels generally use this for navigational safety. Weather Channels - Channels WX1 to WX7: Not conversational but provide continuous weather broadcasts. These vary depending on region and availability. Notes - Be mindful that channels and their uses can vary by region. Some channels are also reserved for specific types of communication, such as port operations or environmental response, so it’s best to verify local regulations before using them.
