I would use that palette it's not cheap it's about £50 for a new wave palette 8 would get some use out of it I've just got my large wooden kidney shaped palette through the post and I love it already

I gave up on holding a palette due to hand fatigue and switched to a tabletop glass palette, heavy and cumbersome to travel with, and here I was holding my palette wrong to begin with! 🤦🏻♀️Thank you the great tutorial and the bonus of a an easy to mix flesh tone, too!

Very useful. Well done. I am not a artist as far as painting portraits, etc, (I studied jazz guitar many years and do photography for a living). I found your video while searching for a way to DIY build a simple palette for my limited painting for a model railroad backdrop (to add depth to the scenes) which I have been building many years. I found your video very useful on many levels. Thanks for doing it. Philip NYC / Jersey Shore Area

I regret not returning the artist palette I got for my birthday 4-5 months ago, cause I don’t stand up when I paint and I rarely use more than 3 colors per session. I’m definitely only buying plastic ones in the future, as I am just left with a palette that’ll last 2 years before being bulky and rough by paint.
@GeorgeFrederickThomas11 ай бұрын
I bought my palette from New Wave Art and I've been using it for 8 years and it's still in good condition it's very lightweight and smooth after years of use. I know some wooden palettes can be heavy and awkward to use but this is the best one I've tried
@AnimatingOwl11 ай бұрын
@@GeorgeFrederickThomas Yeah but I am just a beginner, and I think my palette probably needs some kind of oil? It feels like it was cut out from some wood and than put directly into the market without any protection. (also hope my comment wasn’t insulting in any way, wasn’t trying to be rude so hope you didn’t take it that way)
@GeorgeFrederickThomas11 ай бұрын
@@AnimatingOwl I completely understand what you mean. Some palettes don't have a proper finish to the wood so I normally look for ones that do. Applying linseed oil or a wood varnish might help the finish so that it's not rough when mixing your paints. There's nothing wrong with using plastic palettes though, it might be the best option in your case. It's good to experiment with different art supplies to find what's best for you. I've definitely had my share of heavy and awkward palettes!

two questions 1. what are those medium pots and how are they stuck to the board? 2. do you actually use that cartoonishly long brush?
@GeorgeFrederickThomas Жыл бұрын
The medium posts have a sort of clip underneath which holds them to the palette. These are the ones I use: amzn.to/3Of4WQV I only use that brush for when I paint portraits from life in my studio as it gives me distance from my canvas so I can sketch in the main shapes and proportions whilst seeing the painting as a whole rather than getting too caught up in the details, it also allows me to see the sitter at the same time. I know Thomas Gainsborough used to tie his brush to broom stick to do a similar thing. I also use the brush when I'm painting really big paintings. I don't bring it out landscape painting though 😆

I have that small plastic pallet you just showed at the beginning..how do I hold it?
@GeorgeFrederickThomas8 ай бұрын
You can hold the plastic palette in the same way that I hold the wooden one, with your thumb through the hole with the main bulk of the palette behind resting on your arm. I hope this helps :)

I use mostly sansdor which is a low odor solvent about 80% and about 20% refined linseed oil mixed together. If I'm painting over a longer period of time I will gradually add a bit more linseed oil to the medium
