It is clear that in the second sentence "both" follows a personal pronoun.If "both" has to precede a personal pronoun, (as shown in the first sentence) then the phrase "both of" is inevitable .It is quite interesting. Thank you Andrew. In my opinion, Andrew is the best teacher to cover extensively all grammatical points. This is the best channel for learners of English grammar.
