How to Use Brushes with PanPastels and Pastels Pencils
In this pastel demonstration I show you how I use PanPastels and Pastel Pencils on Pastelmat with my brush technique.
I use masking film to prevent halos around my subjects and show you how I mix colours if I don’t have the hue or colour I’m looking for.
This painting is inspired by FineArtAnne, such a talented artist. Anne has invented a 31 Day Creating Creature challenge during the month of March, and this is Day 15 Dragon Leaf.

I really enjoyed watching this video and once again how you use the brushes with pan pastels. I want to start a portrait of my 2 year old granddaughter. I have the Clairefontaine pastel mat in white, sienna, brown and the very dark grey, what color would you recommend for creating a caucasian little girl on with the colors that I have on hand? I also have the full set of the portrait pan pastels and the Faber Castell Pitt pencils and Carbothello pastel pencils. This will be my third go around trying to create my granddaughter. The first two that I ruined of her was all done with colored pencils and countless hours in both so I am hoping that the pastels will be much kinder to me. I am opened to any tips or suggestions...Lol

G'Day again, colour of Pastelmat you ask? I usually use the darker shades of Pastelmat as it helps me figure out my tones as I work, however in the end I cover the whole surface with pastel. Seeing as you have brown and very dark grey (good choice also) I would use any of those colours. The beauty part of using Pans is that you can mix them to make new colours like wet paint. As for skin tones I mix colours to make new tones which is a main feature of this medium. I wouldn't worry about how many times you start a project, I've started the same project quite a few times. Remember people only see the end result.

Hey Yris, I love painting these weird themes, although I think this one is a bit scary (this is my take on Mash-up prompt 15. Dragon leaf). I truly have no idea where these ideas come from, I suspect God helps me think of these. And yes we can't let her stop us from drinking that grape juice, it's just not on!!! It's a good thing she's my friend!!!! hahaha

Hey there Guy, the ugly stage stays around for a while and then before you know it there she is!!! She is a bit spooky actually. This is inspired by March Mashup where you create creatures. And yes she's weird😉😉

What do you use to trace the image? White carbon paper? I have Saral Transfer Paper but it does not lift well with anything

Hello Mono, are you referring to the thing that I'm cutting before I apply PanPastels? if so, this is called Masking film and the brand is X-Press IT. This is a terrific tool and something I can't do without.

@@snatchbloock hi Mono, I draw on the surface first then I apply the masking film and then I cut. I can do this method because I use a very sharp blade and apply the lightest pressure possible. Pastelmat is strong and I've had no trouble with this method. Remember sharp blade, light pressure.
