Can you elucidate WHY one should not have caffeine until ~90 min after waking?
@ormedanim
@ormedanim 8 ай бұрын
@rosedragon108 because when you wake up your cortisol levels are going up as well naturally which has an awaking effect, you want to have coffee when that effect starts wearing off (he explained this much better in many of his amazing podcasts)

I love coffee. When I heard him suggest delaying it for 90 mins in the morning, I thought I'd feel terrible, but I did this, and it works for me. When I wake up, instead of 3 cups before 9am, I have a cup of peppermint tea first. I told myself I'm not depriving myself, I'm just not having it *now*. What I discovered is that the ritual of boiling water, selecting the tea bag, adding a bit of honey etc....is as important as the drink itself, which means I can "get by" for 90 to 120 mins before I have that first glorious cup of Joe.

The caffeine crashes are a no-go for me. Last year I had around 5 cups of coffee a day. Early this summer I decided to quit by lowering my intake every day. After a few weeks I got it down to zero. Months later I began drinking green tea. On a typical weekday I drink around 2 cups of green tea at the end of the morning. Sometimes I skip a day and I usually don’t drink it on the weekend. This has been a real game changer for me: no longer the highs and lows but rather stable energy levels. Try this if you’re struggling with dependency issues!!

Thanks Andrew, your films are great. I've learned so much from them. I started drinking one cup of coffee, c 4 times a week, at 54 years old. I drink it after being awake for c. 3 hours and never after 11am (yip, am). I wasn't allowed to drink coffee as a child and this restriction stuck well into adulthood. I take it when I'm going into the office and want some extra alertness. It's great for that. But I can take or leave it. Suspect I'm not typical. Takes all sorts tho! 😊

As someone 32 and has had caffeine between 6-9pm for a few years before slowing down on that, this so accurate. I can fall asleep easily after having it that late but definitely feel like I got half the actual sleep. I used to have coffee early in the day, preworkout (200-325mg) mid day or late (vice versa) and still fall asleep. But I feel much better overall now consuming half or less, some days without. Decaf coffee now helps me with wantinf the taste without the effects.

not drinking caffeine 15 days, still can't concentrate on work, what's wrong with me... i only drink 1 cezve(250ml 20gr of coffee), and sometimes 1 or 2 cups of tea. feels great when drinking coffee in the morning, can work, can sleep very well, now i'm just a zombie... for me my mind was always scattered(? don't know actually how to say it in english, i mean i just can't concentrate and always thinking about everything), but when i start learning code i start drink coffee and wake up at 4:55, go to bed at 19:30-20:30, and start to have good sleep without a melatonin pill, and it's all going very well, i go to the gym, learing code, good sleep, but then i have surgery and stop drinking coffee and it's feels really terrible few days(few days use soft painkillers), and i just think it's caffeine withdraw, so maybe i'm addicted and i need to stop consuming it and i just go cold turkey. after 10 days my sleep start getting worse and worse, now and 15 days without caffeine i start thinking to start slowly comsuming it because it make me be productive and happy person with good sleep and good concentrate

Why do you guys even do this stuff to yourselves? Jesus, if you're truly that chemically dependent on something learn to just slowly taper off. There is absolutely nothing nobel or dignified or healthy about quitting something cold turkey and 'embracing' withdrawal as if it's some healthy thing to do. Drug withdrawal is NOT healthy. Especially in the absence of tapering (which will still cause some withdrawal is done right). It doesn't have to be something that hospitalizes you or kills you to be considered unhealthy. The acetylcholine deficiency alone from caffeine withdrawal is basically just begging for brain damage and hindered memory until your system reasserts itself which.. who knows how long that will even take. It could be months if you've used caffeine consistently for years. There is no benefit whatsoever to cold turkey. Your body and brain absolutely hates it.

@@EdySmi It's really not that good. Also if you're using caffeine without at least 3 days in between each exposure to it you're essentially wasting your time and you're losing tons of what little efficacy this lame drug already even has. Keep it at 2 to 3 days a week tops.

For anyone debating on whether getting into caffeine. I’m 25 and just started consuming caffeine this year after have our first baby due to being so exhausted and my coworkers always consuming it. I’ve come to an understanding that it varies per person but for me half a cup of coffee has me wired and sometimes anxious but more productive and focused and can get me through the day. I only consume a hour or so after waking up and it literally kickstarts my day, otherwise if I don’t consume coffee I mope around and it’s hard to get anything done due to being exhausted. I’d recommend trying it out for anyone trying to be more productive in their life. But also moderation is key to anything in life. On my days off I don’t consume coffee just to detox. I’ve also noticed that if I don’t detox after a couple weeks my sleep turns to crap and I toss and turn and have terrible deep sleep.

Coffee is more detrimental to me: I started to drink max 3-5 lattes a week max after stopping for a few months. What I noticed is tinnitus and also being more tense and sensitive to my environment which made me struggle to focus on my work actually. I immediately linked it to my intake of coffee which is relevant as it increases the level of cortisol, the hormone of stress. so I am making an experiment for 30 days now, where i remove coffee entirely and... so far i have no tinnitus anymore! I don't feel tense anymore. Sensitivity... to be checked. But I think that we should always be self-aware. We should always know our body

Your fear is rational and that is why you do not drink it. Like vaccines and most poisons in general coffee has been advertised as being safe and effective. Today the human body seems to be saying no to coffee. The human body is its own regulator. Every week, your body changes so you can no longer eat or drink something you could the week before the change. What happens next is replacement. What you once loved to eat or drink is replaced by something else you eat or drink instead, which would be just as healthy for you as the other option. So I guess this means goodbye coffee.

Many people are complaining about coffee. But i think its important to workout or do some form of exercise daily if you are taking caffeine so you can get better sleep. Also, most people sleep by crashing but quieting down thoughts have huge effects on sleep and getting tired is also important. Caffeine is quite useful if you have gained weight and lazy or are unable to focus. You will have energy and focus when you intake caffeine but if you don't use it effectively than you won't have good sleep. I mostly use caffeine as pre workout and to focus on my studies.

Quitting caffeine entirely was the best decision I’ve ever made. Caffeine is much more powerful than people realize, and even a small amount consumed in the morning can have a negative impact on sleep where you wake up the next morning in a energy deficit. I’m 10x more calm, focused and productive caffeine-free.

You're stuck in a loop of drug dependency. Its not the only thing keeping you awake, in fact its one of the main factors of making you tired. Slowly cut down on your caffeine over the next couple of weeks, maybe switch to green tea or decaf. Then go altogether cold turkey and improve your diet. You'll see a world of difference trust me. Your brain and body will rebel the first week or two, but don't get the idea into your head that you specifically need caffiene to fight exhaustion, in fact its one of the causes of it.

Sadly, I never could completely adapted to the caffeine. After two years of daily filter coffee and watching a video like this that mentioned the panic that can come with it, I stopped. It caused regular panic attacks and I'm honestly stumped that it never occoured to me that it could be the caffeine.. Only thing I miss is the variety in (non-decaf) coffee beans.

Dear Dr. Huberman, First off, thank you very much for your contributions. You have provided many great insights and benefits from your experience. You have also been candid and admitted that you are not a nutritionist. And let us assume, you are also not a physician, a biologist, naturopath, or homepath. Or to put another way, a holistic practitioner. Regarding coffee, while it may be beneficial in some ways, it is hugely detrimental in other ways. For example, it increases uric acid and causes uric acid deposits. Uric acid has been linked with several disorders and illnesses, 0:05 such as Alzheimer’s disease. Uric acid deposits affect the brain, the joints, and can be especially felt in the feet. Furthermore, the caffeine is quite high, and it leads to adrenal fatigue. The majority of Americans are suffering from adrenal fatigue. We could take much to recover, and only seconds to go back into adrenal fatigue again.

About 7 years ago I started to drink coffee (2 cups a day at most) and noticed my hair falling out rapidly. I was never much of a soda drinker. So this was mainly my intro to caffeine. I’m 37 years old now. Was around 29 yrs old then. Is there any science behind this? Because I’ve heard from others that they have had this issue as well.

I had the same issue, but I also was really anxious at that period, probably caused by work stress and coffee combined. Anxiety can cause air loss, and coffee can cause insomnia or lack of good sleep, so your immune system is affected.

I think it's more or less like if you are crunched for time in the morning to get a work out in. For instance if you work at 7. Waking up at 5 and wanting a workout in fuled by caffeine would be difficult if you waited over an hour to consume said caffeine.

Why does it make sense not to delay your caffeine intake if you're using it "to really jolt your system before a workout."? Does that mean I can use a decent pre-workout within 90 minutes of waking up, 4 to 5 times a week before working out, and still have an optimal routine for peak performance? Assuming my post-workout meal/diet is optimal as well.

I think the discussions between Andrew and the guests are at a different level for at least some of the episodes (especially the one with the AthleanX bodybuilding expert, sorry for not being able to mention the name). It would be great if you can include a pitfalls sessions in every episode so that the expert hosted can establish some well known dangers and protocols to prevent them.
