Loved this approach for changing up the pattern. Any pattern can be done with your stash. Choose your feature block and insert blocks from your stash.

Using a bigger ruler allows placement of the cutter without being on the fabric so that the beginning of the cut is smooth and away from you rather than a 'push' downward into the fabric. ALSO: place folded fabric with the fold side closest to you to avoid 'pressure bubbles' from pushing away from your body when cutting.

Hannah, I am so impressed! You proceeded through this tutorial from start to finish without a hitch. Your quilt was a surprise on first glance. Note; I have yet to make a quilt. So far, I've been watching hours and hours of quilting tutorials. As a result, the sweet freestyling approach you took a time or two, while making your quilt, was something I did not expect. I am one of those people who likes to make the decisions, especially in anything I have creative ownership over. However, at times, I am a tad too perfectionistic for my own good. As a result, "stage fright" is a feeling I have come to know well. The potential for making a mistake, particularly while people are watching, tends to bring to mind images of barefooted me, hesitating to begin the fire-walk I foolishly imagine is before me. You were cool as a cucumber in this video. You chose to proceed without overthinking. In being fearlessly genuine, you were able to take your new quilting project over the finish line in a mere 30 minutes or so. 🙂 And, in the end, you lived to see another day! Only this time, you were, literally, invited to step out from behind the "quilt curtain" and teach us what it's like to daily rub shoulders with Donna, Fran, John and the rest of the Fabric Cafe production team/family. You definitely put your own spin on things; while still bringing the whole project home with finesse. You remained true to the quilt pattern's overall intent: to make a beautiful quilt that reminds people to stay "Balanced." And, in the process, you showed that Fabric Cafe is the place where individual 's learn in an environment that enables and encourages personal progress; while experiencing one's work as an artist and feel real joy by design.. Thank you for sharing Hannah, I truly loved the lesson and your fun quilt.

Chain piecing almost always saves time. I sew the squares to one strip, cut apart, then sew the other side of the block to the next strip, cut apart, press, then trim.

Great job Hannah. When I’m bordering a square, I sew a strip of fabric on one side then I get another strip and sew it on the other side before I press and cut them apart to save time at the machine.

Hannah, I think your idea is very creative. I applaud you. However my eye is distracted by the different borders around the charms. For some reason it just jangles to me. I think making the charms work with borders would eliminate that ‘jangle’. Thank you for showing what is possible with a charm pack and a 3 yard quilt pattern. Keep quilting, you are inspiring many of us. Look how far you have come in a short time!!

Chai is faster and less chance of having a diff in seam- Jenny MSQC shows this method a lot. Love watching you Hannah

Hannah, great job on giving us options to get a bit more creative. I do use the chain piecing method when working on scrapy Quilts. It is faster because you don't cut thread, and then you may use the rotary cutter and ruler to trim the sections apart. 🎶💐💖

I always wondered about how to use my stash of 5” blocks and this is SO inspiring! I’m going back to all of my 3-yard quilt books to see if any other patterns might be a good candidate for this method. Hmmm, maybe even my 10” squares will now find a new use! One suggestion, though, please use “column” when talking about long vertical strips (up and down) and use “row” when talking about blocks that go across (horizontally - side to side). I’ve made a few column quilts and some patterns really are easier to sew in columns rather than rows. Thanks for the video!

When I altered the Brick Street pattern (all of the main blocks were different fabrics), I chained pieced the strips on to them and then cut them. I thought it was faster.

Forgive me for sounding ignorant but when you use the two different fabrics for the borders of the charm square do you only need 1/2 yard of each color or still one years and just adding the charms to the pattern outside of the three yards, just curious how I would plan this in my purchase of fabric thank you

Hi Robyn! I used a little over a 1/2 yard of my teal and blue by the end of the project. Using two different fabrics for your #3 fabric on the blocks and borders - you could make it work with 3/4 yard. However, you will still need to have additional fabric for your binding. I also used a whole yard of my #2 fabric. Hope this is helpful! - Hannah
