I've been using the Franklin for a while now and have had great results (no false readings so far). I've used several models of the Zircon brand with "sketchy" results. Thanks for the video.

Another tip along with this that I like to use is to place a horizontal strip of painters tape all across where I am thinking about hanging something. Then using the red projected light from the stud finder I can use a pen to mark the edges of the studs and get a picture of what is there and then decide where to use a fastener without marking directly on the wall. (I may have learned this from a previous video on this channel but I can't remember and it has really helped me!)

I usually put a string on a power magnet and leave it about a half inch away from the wall and swing it back and forth until it hits a metal source.

Other non-electronic methods, like finding nail holes in baseboards, taking off outlet covers and poking a nail on either side of the box to find the stud, etc.

Finding nail plates would be pretty frustrating with the magnet. But if you find a stud that's 2i nches wide or better, that could be a clue.

Now how about finding a stud from the outside of the house with vinyl siding. Will they still work ok over vinyl sideline? Thanks.

No they would, they need a more stable surface, vinyl siding has a profile to it and I don't think it would work.

An excellent magnetic stud finder can be found on Amazon.ca at www.amazon.ca/dp/B000IKK0OI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WFFPAbC8TTWDN or by searching for "CH Hanson 03040 Stud 4 Sure Magnetic Stud Finder." I hope you add it to your video description so others can find it. I use it a lot. It's great. I store it in an old eye glass case because screws stick all over it and that can make it a safety issue. I don't like the ones with the fancy lights. In fact one of those types ended up leaving scratches all over my wall.
