The only thing I would add that you didn't mention is that you have to have NFC turned on on your phone. For security I normally have mine off.

Does it still work the same way with gift cards? I have no credit/debit cards on my google wallet but I have a gift card that I added to my google wallet but the gift card doesn't show up at the very top like credit/debit cards, there is nothing at the top of mine, my gift card is below that, when I click on it it opens a barcode and automatically brightens my phone screen, and the egift card instructions say to scan the barcode at the reader.

I believe anything with a barcode is saved that way, yes. For example I have a store loyalty card and my zoo membership saved and they are both in that lower section. Only credit/debit cards are at the top.

You need to make sure you have NFC turned on in your phone settings. If you don't, it won't work. But some older phones don't have NFC and won't work.

That means you have to enable NFC on your phone, usually you enable it the same way you enable Bluetooth.
