Very nice video! I downloaded a fishy file that contained multiple viruses, and hackers feasted on my personal info, and since I used the same password for every website, they had a wide range of access. Great video. Definitely moving to KeePass. As I'm not a tech-savvy please guide me on one question: "Assume" that the user only has KeePass file on the computer- No Usb backup. What if the computer somehow gets misplaced or hard disk malfunctions/corrupts (whatever the technical term here be). I mean if the main master file of Keepass is not within the reach/access of user then what is Plan B? Or USB backup will be the plan B here and no other way around it?

Hi Ismet vs the world: No Keepass is perfectly fine on lower end computers. It doesn't require high end computers to run. KeePass should run on Operating Systems: WINE, 32-bit MS Windows (95/98), 32-bit MS Windows (NT/2000/XP), All 32-bit MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP),Win2K, WinXP, Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

I have multiple computers would like to move the keepass database to another computer. Where is th file that I can copy and paste? I found several kdbx files in various locations on my pc but haven’t found the one with the data. Where is it by default? I found the program in program file (x86). In the XSL folder there a number of kdbx files but all are small. There is a keepass application file that is more than a meg. Can I copy this and replace the file on another computer to duplicate it to use it on another computer ? Great tutorial, I Have been using keepass for 8 years and learned some things
@WhiteArmour5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve Felstein : What I did to find the file easier was simply just open Keepass fully and do File > Save As > Save to a file before you save the new database it usually shows you the exact location of the current database. When you find the database, yes you can simply copy and paste it anywhere as long as you know the password and if you are using a key file + password make sure to copy the key file with database.

@@MartinSvocak No, if your database file is stolen and decrypted all your passwords are in the clear. My advice is to make sure the database file is stored in a safe place (offline, if possible) and if you're really concerned about recovery keys store those separately offline. You can store things on USB keys, NAS drives, you can even create another database file just for keys with a different complex master password.

Would there be a reason to have more than one database?
@WhiteArmour5 жыл бұрын
Hi 1900Maniac: it helps if you separate different users, passwords, and even protect your primary if you do it right. There are many reasons I think.
@NoEgg4u4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Not trying to be funny, but consider the following: Someone has a "we share everything" relationship with their wife. But the husband does not share the erotic sites that he visits. So he can have one keepass database that he shares with his wife, for all of the "proper" sites that they both visit. And he can have a separate keepass database that he keeps on his flash drive (or keeps on his main computer with a name that is meaningless to keep his wife from noticing it). Or, you might need to keep a keepass database on the computer at your job, and you just are not comfortable with having that database have your personal passwords, too. So you can have more than one keepass database -- one that is job-only related, and one for your personal use. Cheers!

This whole password manager business seems cumbersome. If I need to access facebook on a one-off computer at a hotel lobby, for example, I'd have to carry a flash drive with the database, install it on the computer, type in my masterpassword, then finally access my facebook. Am I missing something here that streamlines this process?
@WhiteArmour5 жыл бұрын
Hi DaBayman, you will have to load your database to a cloud service and access it there. Makes life easier but you have to trust a cloud storage solution. Take a look at Lastpass for example.
@NoEgg4u4 жыл бұрын
You can keep the "portable" version of keepass on your flash drive, too. This negates you having to install anything on a guest computer. "Convenience" and "security" do not make a happy marriage. If you want convenience, then use "password" as all of your passwords, and no keepass database or flash drives will ever be needed. If you want security, then some level of convenience will be relinquished. There is no ideal solution to having them both. keepass provides a way to have a very high level of security, with minimal intrusion to convenience.

Why is windows user account not recommended?
@WhiteArmour4 жыл бұрын
Because that account is most likely to get compromised and keeping it away from your password vault just increases your security. Essentially, it adds another layer that bad people have to figure out.
@NoEgg4u4 жыл бұрын
Using the Windows user account will limit your portability, and will cause you to be locked out of your keepass database if your computer ever dies (like if the hard drive becomes unusable). Your keepass database should be backed up to an external drive (a USB flash drive, for example). Otherwise, if you lose your computer or its storage drive fails, you lose your keepass database, and you will have problems logging into your websites (because you no longer have your keepass database). By having a copy of your keepass database on a flash drive, you can use that flash drive on any computer that has keepass installed (or just have keepass "portable" version also on your flashdrive). What does all of this have to do with not using the keepass Windows account option?: If you use the Windows account option, then you will not be able to unlock your keepass database anywhere other than on the computer where you enabled that option. So when you get a new computer, or are using any other computer via your copy of your database from a flash drive, then keepass will not be able to see whatever the Windows account data was from your original computer, and your attempts to get into your keepass database will forever fail. To put it another way: By using the Windows account option, then your keepass database can be unlocked "only" on the computer that created the database. If you use the Windows account option, then you will be hosed if your computer (the one you used to create your keepass database) fails. keepass will be looking for something that is unique to your current computer, and when it does not find it, you will never get back into your keepass database. So why have that option?: It is actually a security enhancement. Why?: Lots of people use insecure passwords. So there are probably people that will use, for example, "password1" as their master password. Then their database gets backuped up to cloud storage or somehow gets into the hands of someone that should not have your keepass database. Well, with the Windows account feature having been used to create the keepass database, well, that database is useless to the world. No computer, other than the one that created the keepass database, will be able to open your keepass database. So it is a very strong method of securing your keepass database. But it introduces the high risk because if your computer dies from a storage failure, then you are screwed. There is a way to recover from such a catastrophic problem. But lots of things have to line up, and you must be very computer savoy. So for the most part, the risk of forever getting locked out of your database is very real, if the computer that created the database should have a storage failure. All of this is easily avoidable by using a strong master passphrase, and never forgetting it. Using "keyfiles" is also great, as those files can be backed up (and will be needed on whatever other computers you might ever use to open your keepass database). Cheers!

Omfg I got 4 seconds in to this and I knew I would spend the next year trying get access to my stuff after I screw this up. No thanks.
@rehoboth_farm3 жыл бұрын
IDK, I think it's a completely useless PITA. The only reason that anybody can come up with to use it is that someone could get access to their passwords if their computer is stolen. If someone steals my laptop, unlikely, they will have an encrypted hard drive to send off to the recycler along with the rest of them machine which has a locked bios. Good luck with either one of those. If they can decrypt the hard drive then cracking this password database would be nothing. I guess they could always steal the ram and reuse it. Part out the screen. Whatever. Of course if you are running windows all someone has to do is stick a restore USB in and reset your password. It's kind of like not actually having a password. Running this software in windows is kind of like putting a big steel vault door on an old wooden outhouse.
