I'm fortunate that I have one, so I would go with Dominoes to give that alignment security. I've never built a knock down table so I'll wait for the build video to see some more techniques
@TheWoodKnight6 жыл бұрын
Given the table itself is from TWWG, there wont' be a proper build video. I'll admit, I'm surprised at the solidness of the brackets - tonight I dry assembled the legs & aprons by assembling it upside down with no dominoes at all. I was able to lean it on the legs, and flip it up by myself. To get everything completely inline, I loosened the nuts slightly (one at a time), and tapped with a mallet until flush. Re-tightened, and its rock solid. The brackets pulling in two directions do make it strong, and a table top would only stiffen that further.

Oh wow so glad I found this. You are actually explaining the removable table legs which is actually what I was looking for! :D

For whatever its worth, my table gets shuffled around at least once a week as we go from just the two of us to friends over for board games. No issues with the table feeling evenly slightly wobbly!

Works both ways too! If I make errors in things like this where I'm not super familiar, the community usually tells me the right way :)

Nice work. Those brackets are a good idea for a table that needs to be knockdown and I imagine they are a good deal sturdier than a lot of the furniture you see them on commercially when you pair them with dominoes. Thanks for the video, they are appreciated. Keep em coming.

Paul, Thanks for the info. I’ve seen them on tables and chairs many times but never looked closely at what cuts were required nor how to make them.

Wouldn't leaving some space between the lag and the metal bracket so that the bolt is under tension, pulling at the leg give stronger results?

Can you tell me if you made any joints to put two slabs together to make a leg? Or you just glued the two peaces of wood together? Is it strong? Is not more adviseble to make a leg from a single peace of wood? Thanks in advance. Best regards from Brazil.

What if you were to leave the corner bolt out, set your brace on top of domino assembled apron, mark your lines, remove apron pieces, make your dado cuts, slide the corner brace down into the grooves and then turn your bolt thru the face of the bracket?
@OneManBandWoodworks6 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have a big enough router bit you can use a hand saw... those joints are 1000 times stronger with dowels/tenons/Dominos because the angle brackets pull them against the tenon and create a heap of friction. I see a lot of people just butt them up with no alignment mechanism and they just fail over time
@TheWoodKnight6 жыл бұрын
Handsaw? Pffst, I'm not a masochist! ;) You are absolutely right though, plenty of ways to skin a cat for making the chamfer. They can work well even if they don't have tenons, but they do need to be very snug, and use the appropriate size screws, rather than 12mm 6g. I've been surprised at commercial/bulk made stuff that *doesn't* fall apart with these types of brackets. But I tend to try and err towards overkill if I can ;)

So my question, of many, is what kind of tap do you use for tapping the wood?
@TheWoodKnight4 жыл бұрын
The bolt I used (hanger bolt I think?) cuts its own thread, then had a machine thread on the back half. You could use a threaded insert, or just a regular metal tap though

Awesome video! About to start my TWWG table and was looking for a way to make removable legs. How does this interfere with the sub frame and plywood base?
@TheWoodKnight3 жыл бұрын
I had to notch the plywood out around the brackets, and I ended up making the top frame a little wider. In hindsight, I probably should have just made the ends wider but not the sides to allow for more space in the vault but there were a few conflicting desires - wife wanted it as close to Marcs as possible, etc.

Paul, I have made 1/2" chamfers on my legs and there is still too much of them protruding beside the aprons; is it as simple as making a wider chamfer, or do the kerfs need to be moved? Modeling mine after an old library desk with 2" kerfs and 1/2" chamfers that looks how I want; only difference is my legs are slightly more stout. Thanks!
@TheWoodKnight4 жыл бұрын
If you're increasing the chamfer size, you would need to recalculate/measure where the kerfs in the aprons would go, because the whole bracket is going to shift inwards
@stephenlucas60384 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight Right, that makes sense. Thanks.

Is this use in dining chair
@TheWoodKnight2 жыл бұрын
These particular ones are probably a little too large for dining chairs, and (typically) you don't need the knockdown feature on chairs.
@AndrewBader3 жыл бұрын
Paul, does having the dominos restrict you from pulling the leg off when you need to knock the table down at a later date? I would guess that once the apron and legs are fully assembled it might be hard to pull the legs off with those dominos working against each other?
@TheWoodKnight3 жыл бұрын
It's more difficult than not having them there, but just means a few taps with a mallet to loosen it in one direction first
@AndrewBader3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight Ok, so I guess your apron would flex enough to clear the length of the domino in order to pull the leg out completely. Once you remove one apron the other one would then be very easy.
@TheWoodKnight3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewBader no flexing - take an entire side off at once (start with the short ends), so you end up with 2 legs+1 apron removed. Then easy to slide off those two legs
@AndrewBader3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight Ahh duh! Ok, I wasn't thinking about removing both legs at the same time! I caught myself in a mental loop thinking how you could possibly remove a single leg, ha. Makes sense, thanks!

Paul you're done
@critcherk0016 жыл бұрын
How do you pull the legs off if there are dominos in 2 faces of the legs?
@TheWoodKnight6 жыл бұрын
Carefully! ;) The screws and nut need to be removed, then the bracket/leg/apron can be slid away to the point that the bracket can be removed entirely, then the aprons just slide off
@critcherk0016 жыл бұрын
that sounds like it might wear out the screw holes quickly. I don't really understand how that will all work with a table top attached yet so ill have to wait for the next video.
@TheWoodKnight6 жыл бұрын
If you're moving it frequently, yes, it probably would, which is why I mentioned tapping the wood for bolts. Threaded inserts *might* be viable, but I don't have any M5 threaded inserts on hand. The table top would attach just like if the legs were glued into the aprons - using Z-clips/wood buttons/etc, you don't normally directly attach the legs to the table top
@critcherk0016 жыл бұрын
I think i understand now, I thought you were intending to move it around more often than just upstairs the one time. thanks for the replies

I still don’t understand how you can slide the leg in 2 aprons at 90°.
