Really good once again Darren. I find myself watching tutorials these days and shaking my head on some of the information being presented, but your info seems to be right on the money to me. Shot matching and balancing seems to me to be a large amount of what I do- yet it is hardly covered. The info you have here - in my opinion is going to help people intensely - There are a lot of people out there that add a LUT on one clip and they are happy, then they add the same LUT on another angle and it looks awful- but if they balanced the angles as you did here- the consistency would allow them to do an overall grade and apply it to their whole project. Again - keep them coming - the only thing I would say is the audio sounds like the mic is not close enough when you are talking at the intro and end - maybe get the mic a little closer to your mouth to get less room and more you. Great job - keep em coming.

@@DarrenMostyn Absolutely! Thanks. I have been grading since the early days of Lustre 1.0 and I have spent countless hours in Telecine suites with top colorists. You can never stop learning. I like the fact that you keep it short and to the point. The idea of doing bite-sized tip videos is a way to go. Especially like this, when you show a simple technique to match shots, or anything else you think of is beneficial. There are too many "new breed" "colorists" that spend 30+ minutes on a shot without basic understanding how to match shots in a first place.

Great video! It looks like lum mix isn't working when editing in a color managed environment using DWG as a timeline color space, is there any workaround for this?
@scottjones14263 жыл бұрын
It seems that if my project is set to Davinci YRGB Color Managed and Davinci Wide Gamut that setting Luminance Mix to 0 does not make it possible to do the individual channel adjustments without altering luminance on the other channels. I choose anything other than Wide Gamut and it works as expected. Couldn't make your tutorial work until I realized the settings issue. Is there a reason for this? A bug?
@Bart_was_his_name Жыл бұрын
It may appear that other color spaces give you the expected result, but the ONLY way to truly isolate channel adjustments is to have matching timeline (color processing mode) and output color spaces. Think of it as the Primary Bars existing in timeline color space but the Scopes existing in output color space. It wouldn’t make sense for the luma mix setting to target a fixed Y of another color space.

THANK YOU!I remember studying this in the Blackmagic Course. But this hit it deep into my head of how powerful this is for matching shots. @Darren Mostyn Could you explain why you prefer to start matching with the Luma Mix at 100 first? I'm sure you have an important reason.
@DarrenMostyn2 жыл бұрын
I don't always use 100. I tend to mix it back when I need it. Im actually not really worried overly which mode I'm in as I have the advanced panel and so its really easy for me to adjust the luma compensation...its almost 'habit' - if it needs it I fix it easily as i have a dial permanently at my fingertips. i think if you are grading using the GUI then you have to think harder which is best for you. Hope that helps.

Can you give some examples of when it's beneficial to use different luma mix values? My brain in saying, "zero seems like the better option" but since the default nis 100 there is probably a reason behind it.
@mecan51963 жыл бұрын
The Luma Mix function adjusts your luma adjustments made by the Y Lift, Gamma and Gain controls, or unganged curves Y adjustment. So let's say you make a curve adjustment and you want to back off on it a bit, you can dial the Lum Mix down from 100 rather than going back into your curve or again tweaking the 3 Y adjustments. Just a quick way to finesse any luma adjustments you are making. Super useful when you're using it on a control surface because you can stay in full-screen and make these macro-adjustments - it's quick and keeps you in the flow. For these reasons, I find default is good at 100, but useful to set it to zero to make colour adjustments easier in some cases. Also, say you're using only a mouse or track pad to make lift, gamma, gain adjustments. These wheels might be a bit cumbersome, so setting your Luma Mix value at around 50 or so is going to mean the adjustments you make feel a little more controlled.
