I've been using Oramask for years now...I would suggest a few tips...1) seal the wood first with shellac, 2) once mask is applied I roll it with an ink roller (obviously without ink) to get more uniform adhesion, and 3) after carving, prior to painting seal the carved areas with shellac...no bleed of paint into surrounding wood...

Garrett, thanks so much for all you teach! You are the sole reason I got into CNC woodcarving! Your Wednesday evening live is a great way for all the rest of us to learn. This live feed on the Oramask, is another feather in your cap of teaching tools! The surprise visit to your shop , shows how much fun and support your staff offer! Thanks again Buddy!

Thanks for the demo Garrett. Merry Christmas. I’ve been working on several Christmas things with my CNC. Bread & Cracker trays, family signs, and charcuterie boards. Oh, and coasters made from trimmings on the charcuterie boards. Love your stuff. I learn a lot from you. Steve

When masking a long board if you use painters' tape and tape it down in the center and a couple of spots on one half to hold the masking in place. Then fold the other half over lightly cut the backing paper then peel it back a couple of inches and proceed just as you did in the video. that way one person can easily put down a long piece of masking by him/her self.

I use to use Oramask until I watched a video by Rob Shuster @Sidewinder Drums using water based wood filler. Simply Stain and Seal with shellac or lacquer. After that dries put on small amount of the wood putty and mix with water to make a sloppy paste and spread a light coat over what your going to carve. After carving paint or stain what you want. Sand off the wood filler and finish as yo want, no worries about masking lifting up i

@@IDCWoodcraft I know you were under the gun, with the going live. Maybe make a script note - anytime you are carving and coloring, seal and THEN Oramask. Still, enjoyable!

Brings up another question tho - learning moment...... OK, I forgot to seal and Oramasked. Can I strip off the mask, seal, and reuse the mask?

Do you get any buildup on the CNC bits as you carve? And if so, do you pause occasionally to clean off the bit, then continue?
@IDCWoodcraft10 ай бұрын
Frankerry, sometimes I do, a good trick is to clean them in Simple Green every few months.

Do you seal the carving prior to paint?
@srleitch7510 ай бұрын
Absolutely or youll end up with paint bleeding into the wood grain. .
@srleitch7510 ай бұрын
I like to sand, then seal, mask, cut, then reseal the letters, dry then paint. Ive had best results with that method, especially with wood like oak.

Does anybody do a quick edge seal after the Oramask has been carved maybe with some shellac etc.????
@IDCWoodcraft5 ай бұрын
dptp9lf, Yes, applying a quick edge seal after carving Oramask can help prevent bleeding when painting. Shellac can be a good option, as it dries quickly and provides a seal on the edges of the carved area. Just make sure to apply it carefully to avoid smudging your design.
