Can you create a mask with the smart selection tool and then apply adjustments to that? Seems like it could be a faster method than painting things on. Thanks!
@AffinityRevolution4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. For some things, it's better to make selection and then apply a mask, and for other things it's better to apply a mask and then paint on it. It depends on how difficult the area is to select, and whether or not the selection tool can accurately select that area.

Best wishes from Scotland to Ezra! Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I've already started the Designer course which I recently purchased along with your eBook. I can recommend it to all. Great tip creating a group to use the same mask. Tried it a couple of times but got the order wrong, only getting it to work when I remembered to create the adjustment first, then the mask! And I totally agree with other comments here: Whilst I don't hate Adobe - I bought CS2 student edition back in the day - I was none too pleased with the complete lack of support when I bought a new PC with Windows 7, only to be told it was not compatible with CS2 and that I should upgrade to the latest version. Hey, it's not like I'm a professional photographer, and I was completely happy with CS2. Long story short, after searching through forums, I did manage to find a workaround using regedit - defo not for the uninitiated - and was able to continue using Photoshop until I bought a new camera. Camera raw didn't recognise my D7200 NEF files. More planned obsolescence! And then along came subscription. Goodbye Adobe! Again thanks for making Affinity fun and accessible to dunces like me!

When I select the "Curves" adjustment, I notice my square in the Layers is White? I adjust my curve, using your photo as a follow along, and then I close out the curves box. I then "Group" as you showed, then when I "Option/Alt & Click on Mask", I get a pixel layer. The thing that stood out with your tutorial and my Affinity, is that when you select "Curves" your box is black, and mine is white? How do I change that to mimic yours. I will have to say that when I select Curves, the box is Black for a split second, then it turns white. Can you make a video on how to blend parts of different photos using masks? Some pro photographers use that technique to blend parts of 3 or more photos using masks in photoshop. I was wondering if AP can do the same.
@AffinityRevolution5 жыл бұрын
AP can definitely do the same thing. I've been thinking about making some compositing tutorials, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Hopefully I can get to it soon! :)

@@AffinityRevolution I think I understand. But the title of that video doesn't make me think it's about blending elements of multiple photos. Also, why not stack raw files instead of jpeg?

I tried using MASK LAYER and when I paint white, it started showing up the layer beneath and when I started painting black, it continued to show the layer beneath rather than covering the layer. So why am I facing this issue ?
@AffinityRevolution4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure... that should not happen. I'd ask on the official Affinity forums, and see if anyone on there knows why. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/

Legit question. Can I use a black and white image as a mask? I've tried but has not been able to.
@AffinityRevolution3 жыл бұрын
You could use the Flood Selection tool to make a selection of the black or white areas, and then turn that selection into a mask. 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWiZoqWpg6droaM

I am on an iPad, when I applied my gradient the picture turned B&W ?… what happened please .
@AffinityRevolution3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you applied the gradient to the photo layer, instead of to the mask layer.

@@AffinityRevolution oh! Thanks, you make it look so easy, and when I try, admittedly I am new, all I do is mix up everything but I am doing your coarse , so hopefully it will all clear up a bit. Can you do an iPad version sometimes, pleeeaaassseeee.

other videos says black is transparancy and you say white paintings reveals, i am confused
@AffinityRevolution5 жыл бұрын
We are both saying the same thing, but in different ways. A black mask will make the CURRENT layer transparent, thus REVEALING the layer underneath it. I hope that helps! 😊

The new 1.7.2 update to Affinity Photo has a glitch that does that... they will fix it in the next update to Affinity Photo. Hopefully that fix comes sooner rather than later! 👍 forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/96002-masking-level/
