Making a vocal smooth and sit in the mix. But when doing the video everytime a plug-in is contributing to sitting the vocal back in the mix, really empathize that part of the video. Keep bypassing and un bypassing the plug-in so people understand exactly how the sound was before, and why/how you got the sound after.
This is the ultimate secret for great vocals, and nobody talks about it lol

Nobody except me 😅 but you’re right. Took me a bit to learn this one, I actually had to attend an official FabFilter workshop to get exposed to this but the moment I figured it out, it changed EVERYTHING. Glad it helped 👊🏼

@@5piece is there something you would recommend that would level out quiet parts and lessen louder parts? I usually throw it into the compressor but I'd like to have it "leveled" on the file itself instead of through the plugin because I can't see how the end result

I think you highlighted a lot of my mistakes with this tool: bands too narrow, not adjusting gain for what is lost, and applying too much. I noticed the vocals sounded pretty good by the time you got to applying multiband compression. Is this always how you use it, or are there applications for it earlier in a vocal chain?
@5piece3 жыл бұрын
I discuss this at greater length around the 17:46 and beyond. This is primarily how I use it - to correct frequency problems that occur after another plugin like an EQ or compressor. Occasionally I will use it as a replacement for my standard compressor since it does offer more control over individual frequency bands, BUT the way I describe at the end is the main way I use it. Hope this helps!!

Not an expert but it seems like when you eq your music to your liking the regular compressor does almost the same as an multiband without proper eq. Please tell me if I'm mistaken
@5piece3 жыл бұрын
Can’t fully say you’re mistaken as every track is different and what you propose may genuinely work in some scenarios. I personally don’t find them to sound the same; compressors have their own frequency response and way of manipulating the frequency spectrum of a sound even if it’s not the intentional. This is usually because some frequencies are louder than others, yet the compressor reacts the same to all frequencies unless using a built in HPF filter or other EQ manipulation beforehand. I would say the MB sounds different from normal compression (though very similar) and offers significantly more control. The beauty is, you can also use an MB as a compressor by simply selecting the entire frequency range when dialing settings. Hope this helps 👊🏼

Interestingly, this tutorial video regarding comprression has a large volume difference between the narrator's (tutor) microphone level and the music, including the intro music. I had to turn up the volume in order to hear and understand what he wa saying, But, when the music played, it was ridiculoudly loud! Perhaps one should learn how to merely adjust the volumes of individual tracks, here the narrator and music tracks, before offering tutorials on multiband compression. Just a thought.
@5piece2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. Will be mindful of volume balancing music and vocal audio more in the future, although this video is over a year old now and it may not be indicative of recent content. I disagree on the sentiment of not teaching others though until I master that skill as you propose. As a solo content creator doing everything myself, mixing video audio and mixing music audio is VERY different, and while I excel with mixing music, I’m still learning the video side of things. Most people teaching on KZbin do not always have the best mixed audio but their lessons still apply. If I waited til I was an expert at mixing video audio, then there would probably be no videos or lessons. I’d rather put content out and learn as I go, rather than be like 90% of people who never try in the first place and just leave internet comments from their bedroom. Thanks for watching.
