Ranger/Pacing beads are a great way of measuring distance as you go along. If you do not have a GPS at your disposal then this tool will come in handy. I enjoy using them and it keeps my mind occupied.

Good video, if I could make a suggestion on your beads. Start all the beads at the top of the cord, as you walk just pull a bead down. It only takes one hand. Your way takes two hands to operate it.

Very practical way of measuring your steps. Tq for bringing back the long forgotten method.

I love the idea of practicing it shopping or doing other everyday tasks. It seems meditative.

Tserisa It definately will help to hone your understanding of this skill and make it into a subconscious action. I have done the same and, like you said, it kinda calms you down whilst going through your day + you're doing something that will benefit in a wilderness navigation szenario. regards!

Oh cool, so they're like a flexible abacus used as a counter! And if you apply yourself, you'd be able to turn them into something wearable too. Good vid, thanx man.

I just saw your video for the first time. And am planning on making a "ranger bead" of my own. I just need to know, of what you said about using the "metric system?" I am familiar with the term but MUCH MORE familiar with the other form of measurement, "Feet" and "inches". So my question is this? Will the same ranger bead work the same way, in "inches" as it does with "kilometers?" Sorry, I meant "miles" not "inches"
@drjekillemt
@drjekillemt 2 жыл бұрын
The metric system is based on 10. 10 mm=1cm 10 cm=1 meter 1000 m=1 kilometer 1 mile= 1,609.44 meters The beads makes more sense in counts of ten. I grew up with the metric system and the Imperial System confused me very frequently.

Problem that i've had with pace beads is that on a flat mile I have approx 800 paces. But most of my hikes are not just flat and they run into approx 1000. On a 3 mile hike that I'm very familiar with I would count almost 4 miles. I do think that pace beads are very helpful but have to be used with a map and compass otherwise they can work against you. You have to triangulate. Thank you. What are your thoughts?

Great vid. Quick question, what size was the inside diameter hole on the skull beads? 4mm? 5mm? 6mm? I read a couple of reviews saying the 6mm was too lose and the 4mm just fits one strand of full paracord. Any suggestions?

Biomedman82 - pull the inner strands out and just use the outer sheath.

Dude, nobody pace counts for 25 kilometres. Pace beads are for short distances, for boxing obstacles or finding a landmark in the dark or in fog, or to mark a bearing change where there are no landscape features. It's a useful technique over short distances and for certain things, but using it for long range navigation - especially over irregular terrain - is a very bad idea. Somebody joked it's called 'dead reckoning' for a reason.

@@reneebrown5598 I was referring to the fact he has made 2 sets of beads, the first is a standard 5km set, the second is for counting off 5x the first set (25km). In 99.9% of circumstances, you wouldn't want to be using these for more than 5km, they produce too much error for long distances and just counting for that length of time would be exhausting. If you absolutely had no choice, then every 5k just make a mark on a piece of paper, put a knot in a piece of string or just put a rock in your pocket or something. The point is that using pace beads over such a long distance would be very unusual, rare and extreme, that the second set of beads is a pretty pointless addition.

The down side is you have to count every step 25 KM (or however far you want to walk ) , so you are going to be counting 6-8 hours ( doable if necessary but a bit tiresome ) novel idea but the novelty could wear thin pretty quick .

When you constantly practice counting as he said even when your out doing normal things it becomes second nature. Best way of finding your pace is marking out a hundred metres in a woods with a little rise and fall and you can get a average pace better than doing on a running track (which is to flat). Plus add 5 beads at the top, 5 k is close to 3 miles (3.1 exactly)

Shaun blake:yes thanks i have try it out and it is effective together with time cal ( your pace time/100m,1000m or mile ) the trouble i have is to many interruptions ( people stopping to chat ,stop for drink, check map etc ) now spring is coming i will give it another go with more purpose . Tks agn
