How you use sources in research writing is a key to your success. You need to know signal phrases, reporting verbs, transitions and thought bridges as tools for your research papers, theses, and dissertations.

Thank you for great video! My schedule overlaps now, but I'm watching replays :) I have a question connected to transliteration question asked: is there any editorial opinion or a guideline regarding translation of transliterated titles? Transliteration itself is rarely informative, especially for readers from other field, but translation is not required in references, for unfamiliar readers translation actually makes more sense than transliteration, and for specialists original graphics is more informative (at least for Chinese titles), so I always wondered if there is a guideline for the dilemma. Also I recently faced a problem referencing books using online databases (for more effective and systematic reference): different titles were transliterated using different transliteration systems (Chinese and Japanese languages has established systems, but Korean has at least 3 competing systems and names are just a mess), should I use them as they are recirded in international database, or should I rather use one transliteration through my text, rewriting anything that is from other system?
@peakdavid
@peakdavid 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support and question. Your description of finding different versions of the transliterated and translated titles shows you how out of control this aspect of international scholarship is. Unfortunately, the only guidelines I can point you to are the style guide you are following and the input of your advisors.

Prof. Taylor, may I ask a question? I am preparing a conference proceeding - a literature review, and am trying to cite (paraphrase) from a sourcebook. This one, to be exact: "(The Jacobs Foundation Series on Adolescence) Roland Vandenberghe, A. Michael Huberman - Understanding and Preventing Teacher Burnout" - A Sourcebook of International Research and Practice. So.. to my understanding, a sourcebook is basically a collection of writings and articles on a particular subject. But the book itlself is written, or should I say edited by two authors - in this case - Vandenberghe and Huberman. Now my questions is how should I cite in-text when paraphrazing from the chapters, written by the included authors in the sourcebook. There are, say 20 chapters in this particular sourcebook, written by 20 authors. How would be the correct APA style citing when using that? Should I cite the editors of the sourcebook and then mention the name of the specific chapter's author?
@peakdavid
@peakdavid 2 жыл бұрын
You would use the "Work in an edited book" APA format. Here are three examples that should cover most scenarios: In-text citation: (Aron & Lubart., p. 346). Reference citation: Aron, L., Botella, M., & Lubart, T. (2019). Culinary arts: Talent and their development. In R. F. Subotnik, P. Olszewski-Kubilius, & F. C. Worrell (Eds.), The psychology of high performance: Developing human potential into domain-specific talent (pp. 345-359). American Psychological Association. doi.org/10.1037/0000120-016 In-text citation: (Dillard, p. 116-118). Reference citation: Dillard, J. P. (2020). Currents in the study of persuasion. In M. B. Oliver, A. A. Raney, & J. Bryant (Eds.), Media effects: Advances in theory and research (4th ed., pp. 115-129). Routledge. In-text citation: (Thestrup, n.p.). Thestrup, K. (2010).
