can a thickener be added to make stenciling easier? what might be good - sodium alginate? thanks.

Hi Carolyn - yes, you can add a thickener to this. I have not used sodium alginate, but I would give it a try. I have used guar gum, gum tragacanth and gum arabic as thickeners.

Given that you are printing with tea, couldn’t you use a little tea instead of water in the soy milk to make it easier to see where you have put it on the fabric? This was interesting.

Such a great idea, BJ! Should have consulted with you before filming 😉 It is very tough to see the soy milk, so this would definitely have helped. Thanks for sharing your brilliance!

Can we use this same method in printing using hibiscus dye, henna, coffee, onion skins, beetroot, tumeric ? Or Can you suggest some easily available kitchen friendly dyes for this same method? It was for a project.
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Жыл бұрын
Hi Steffina! Yes, you can use this method for many food based dyes, especially those that have tannins. You should see nice results from most everything you mentioned above except beetroot which is highly fugitive and not a good dye choice for fiber. I also recommend trying this with avocado skin and stone dyes as it works beautifully with soy milk for printing 🥑

I think a nose stud would look very much better than a ring. --- Does this process with soya milk printing only work with tannin rich ingredients like tea? Mixing dahlia petal juice with soya milk wouldn't work as well? Ot iron water? It's not clear why not, if soya milk is used as an all round mordant.

I enjoy wearing both, but thanks for caring enough to share your adornment preferences 😊 You can certainly try any natural dye source with this process and should see results. Tannin-rich dye sources just offer the extra binding power on their own, so it can really stand out.

Thank you for your brill tutorial 👏👏. I tried the soya milk with old curtain silk ; worked wonderfully. Going to have a go at this too. I love your nose ring by the way 😉💐

Can we do this same procedure on silk as well
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Күн бұрын
Yes, you can certainly work on silk, but there will be a different effect based on the potential for greater wicking with this kind of fiber. Perhaps working with more organic designs would be a way to go 😊

Thanks!! Yes, you can paint anything you want with soy milk. Where the soy dries is where the dye will be darker. Go wild and have fun 😊

the other amazing video again!! May I ask what kind of mordant i should use after dye the whole pieces? (The tea colour will fade out after awhile? should I use alum for the whole piece after finish?) Thank you!
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Жыл бұрын
Looks like you found the video I just told you about 😉 Since soy milk is a protein binder and tea has tannin in it, this should be enough for the color to last. However, if you want extra staying power on cotton, you certainly can treat it with an alum mordant as well, but personally, I would pre-treat the fiber with alum first.

Thank you! I often use soy milk the way you show, and am intrigued how you will use it as a resist paint. Love the pad you made, what a good idea!
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest Жыл бұрын
You are most welcome! The pad is a pretty cool tool to have. The resist uses lime and soy milk. The effect has worked well for me, but not always. It can create some really pretty effects, though. Check out next week for sure 😊
