What really ticks me off is when you go to shows and there are all these kids, and I mean 10 year olds, booting their long suffering ponies round the ring with 2-3 inch spurs and gigantic hunting crops. I personally don't like spurs, probably never will.

So why does spur have to be a spiky disc-like object instead of a pointy or sharp, but does not hurt a horse, object?

They have spurs of various shapes (and sizes), from single fingers, to spiky disc-like objects. The vast majority of spurs are NOT sharp or even that pointy though. You can roll them up your arm pressing HARD and nothing will happen to you. They are meant to bring attention or cause slight annoyance, not to harm the horse. Anyone who sharpens a spur or makes them too pointy deserves to be "spurred" themselves with them. I blame the movies for a lot of the misconceptions concerning spurs. And while there are people in both camps (spurs are fine vs NEVER), the truth is, that proper spurs (and their proper use) will not harm the horse.

I will never be for spurs. Its the worst thing ever when 10 yr olds or beginners use spurs and hurt the horse badly. There is no need whatsoever for them, beginner or professional.
