I have had an S950 knocking around for ages. At last i'm looking to fix it up, and i'm wanting to use it (alongside my more modern hardware) at least a little bit. I have been looking around for some plain spoken ''how to'' video because i just have no patience for manuals. So, long story short, THANK YOU for this upload. It really means a lot that i can bookmark this and dip in now and then, actually learning at long last. Thanks again!

Very good and detailed video !! One correction (at least for the 950 but I think its the same for the 900): The output L and R are not monophonic but 4x polyphonic. Output L represents the outputs 1-4 and output R represents the outputs 5-8. This can be handy to play chords. For example you created a Program with drums, bass and a piano. You can then route the kickdrum to out1, snare to out2, hihat to out3, bass to out4 and the piano to outR so you're able to play pianochords without interupting out 1-4.

Cheers! and thanks very much for sharing that .. I might have to double check, you might be right about the 950... I just looked up the S950 manual and it does indeed mention 'Pseudo Stereo Output' on page 6! 🤔 but, I was messing around with it just before the demo (because I avoid the stereo output most of the time) and it sure seemed like it was cutting off notes.. on further checking the S900 manual, the strange thing is.. it doesn't mention Stereo or any mention of polyphony there in Chapter 17 (where the outputs are detailed).. so that's a very curious point you've raised there 🙏🏻 🤔🕵🏻‍♂️

@@tonelab Hi guys, curious now. With the above said, let us say I recorded a drum loop into the S900 and wanted to record its output, back into my DAW. What would I use? If the drum loop was recorded in mono, would I connect my cable to the MIX jack, L and R jack, or one of the single 1-8 outputs and into my mixer/interface?

@@Hauteclaire16 the AKAI branded version of the cable is rare, the 13 pin Roland guitar synth cables are the same and are easy to get on ebay. There are also Kenwood CD changers that use a compatible cable apparently. I've done it with the s612 plus AX60 and AX73, and s950 plus AX60. It's definitely cool, you basically get a second oscillator for the synth that's a 12 bit sample. Officially you can't use the combo with an external sequencer because of the way it uses the MIDI channels unfortunately (at least the AX60 arpeggiator can be clocked with a trigger). The VX90 allows this since it doesn't have a keyboard (and internally translates the MIDI channels it sends to the sampler), so maybe the 73 does too.

In other words, if I want to use more than 1 program at the same time, I need to assign each of those programs to a different key group, and they will all use the same MIDI channel? @tonelab
@tonelab Жыл бұрын
The dirtiest is arguably the SP1200.. but, it also comes with a 2.5 second sample-length limitation.. the S900, or S950, has variable Sample rate, which means you can change your Sample rate to something quite low, and that.. gives you 'dirtier' Samples. The MPC2000XL can do this too, but it's natively 16bit. @@tonelab ok I see. But the 900 must be more difficult to work with being solely diskette based and the 1000 having scsi.
@tonelab
@tonelab 2 жыл бұрын
@@amonster8mymother Well, depends really.. these kinds of limitations were overcome, by many.. for years. However, regardless of that, people still made hit records on them. The decision, for me is prioritized by 'sound'. If 'ease of operation' is the priority in your workflow, then SCSI is beaten hands down by the modern MPCs that have built-in HDs. I came from the 5 1/4" or 3.5" diskette era.. I had shoe boxes full of disks.. but it never worried me, like 'crate digging' records .. i used to like flicking thru disks.. I could do it much quicker than jumping in and out of folders, and certain disks were coloured.. so i automatically knew what was on my yellow disk.. and if I saw that on the other side of my room.. I still didn't need to open it and check the contents.. I just knew immediately what was on it... similar to my record collection, I know the spines of my favourite records.. so I don't even need to see the title, I just know that's it - immediately.. but that's me 🤷🏻‍♂🙏🏻

@tonelab
@tonelab 2 жыл бұрын
@@amonster8mymother Yes, and just to provide an additional tip which may be of use to you.. I kinda now look at these old samplers as 'tools' to colour my sounds.. so, it's not even so much about workflow any more.. I tend to now use these old samplers in a similar fashion to how engineers would use 'pre-amps' on microphones.. because, with workflow limitations aside.. there's one thing that can't be said they're bad at.. and that is 'warmth', the filters sound amazing.. so if you just 'put content thru them' and record what comes out the other end.. into a DAW or another hi-res modern sampler.. they are lovely sounding filters.. and despite how close the plugins-imitations 'say they get', at the end of the day they are trying to replicate the rich sound that comes out of the audio output. To put it into other terms.. I put various sounds and synth textures 'thru' the S900 to 'warm' them up.. and 'bake' them a little bit.. and despite their age.. I'm never bored of it's sound.. it always 'enriches' 99% of what I put thru it.. even thin sounding MP3s can come out of an S900 with a nicer tone than what went in 🙏🏻

It's worth mentioning that bandwidth of a signal and sample rate are two different measurements, so S950 doesn't sample at a max rate of 19200 kHz. The value of bandwidth needs to be doubled to get the sample rate, that's why S950 can be a (relatively) hi-fi instrument.
@tonelab
@tonelab 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for providing this additional information.. I actually don't have an S950, so I had to rely on many different sources to correlate that figure 🤔 if 19,200 is incorrect.. what is the maximum sampling frequency?! do you have an S950?! 👍🏼
@Hauteclaire16
@Hauteclaire16 2 жыл бұрын
@@tonelab yes I do! I think the max sample rate is 40 kHz for S900 and 48 kHz for S950. So, on sample recording menu, for S950, 19200 kHz of bandwidth equals to 48 kHz of sample rate. And for S900 whatever the max value for bandwidth equals to 40 kHz of sample rate. Which makes my previous statement wrong. It's not double the bandwidth value. But I cannot remember the formula from comm theory at all! Totally embarassed myself there! Doubling the bandwidth usually somewhat makes sense to me :D
@tonelab
@tonelab 2 жыл бұрын
hah..yes, I tried to articulate it correctly, despite not having one myself.. the very presence of the term 'bandwidth' (being bit of an old-school term opposed to what seems to be more commonly referred to as 'sample frequency' these days) can make things a little confusing, especially with how the term 'Bandwidth' is used these days.. more generally for 'streaming'. But, as you said, you more or less halve the sample rate to reach the Bandwidth / Sample Frequency value (based on the Nyquist Theorem). At first glance.. it does give off a rather impressive impression of such a high sample rate... but when you get into the 'bandwidth' page, onboard the S900.. it literally goes up to a maximum of 16kHz.. so, I researched the S950.. and every forum-post I could find also mentioned 48kHz.. but that can't be right.. not for a 1986 sampler, I'm sure the technology existed .. but I doubt it would be onboard the S950. So, I think I ended up diving into the manual and pulled that figure from there... anyway 'phew' ☺️ I'm glad I don't have to re-record the tute 🙊 👍🏼

@@tonelab yes, Nyquist theorem it is. Honestly, bandwidth always made a lot more sense to me than sample rate in terms of signals. Also, the value for the Nyquist rate should be at least (!!!) twice the bandwidth. So it can be anything greater than 2B. Don't forget that the sampler itself is 12bit, not 16 so it's very possible for it to have such sample rates. Also, remember the board by Oberheim for S900/950? It was possible to sample even at 16bit at the time but not with such high signal bandwidth.

Hmm... it could be done with a bespoke job.. but it would have wires all over the place.. and, I presume.. you'd have to power up, after the 'cold swap'. But, are you wanting to do this because you have loads of sounds on 3.5" disk.. or something like that?! 🤔
@EvLoutonian
@EvLoutonian 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonelab mm, good question ... it's actually because I would like to retain the ability to make samples on my S900, but then load those files from floppy into my S2000 (which is able to translate the file from S900 to S2000 format). I was told it's not possible to do this on the USB floppy emulator - but maybe you or somebody else could verify that Akai S2000 can also read S900 files from USB?
@tonelab
@tonelab 3 жыл бұрын
@@EvLoutonian ahhh right, I see... in that case, you could probably presume.. the cost of that mod and parts might get close to the cost of a 2nd Gotek for your S2000..perhaps 🤔
@EvLoutonian
@EvLoutonian 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonelab hehe yes, tempting to give it a go.. just not sure the S2000 Gotek will read the S900 Gotek files .. think they would?
@tonelab
@tonelab 3 жыл бұрын
@@EvLoutonian Well, I'd assume so.. if the image type of a 900 disk can be interpreted by the 2000.. then I can't see why the 'virtual images' of a Gotek would be any different.. and even if it is, there's always the HxC conversion software.. but, if you do consider going down that road.. perhaps get the Gotek for the S2000 first.. and then grab some S900 images off the web and try those in your S2000 Gotek first.. because if they do 'read'.. then you're probably better off in the long run going all 'Gotek' anyway 🤓

where do you save s950 sequences? on the sequencer or in the s950
@tonelab
@tonelab 2 жыл бұрын
The S series Samplers from Akai were not loaded with Sequencers... some of the later models in the series had the ability to 'Play' MIDI files.. but, the older ones like the S950 & the S900 don't have the ability to record MIDI.. you have to 'trigger' them from external sequencers 👍🏻

@@rockbwoyindabuilding5397 Yep, and you wanna try to keep their disks together or just write the same name on both disks.. otherwise in a couple of years.. you might end up with a drawer full of disks with random names.. without much correlation.. so, just a 'good house keeping' tip 👍🏻🙏🏻

Can you set the triggering to one shot mono like the mpc2000 has? And does it have a decay setting where I can change the velocity attack start and level?

There is no 'Decay' velocity, as such.. but there is 'attack', 'loudness' & 'release' .. @50:00 via the Velocity page.. what you find here, is all you have in terms of Amplitude.. there's also filter control, which I did another clip for, which is a hack to control it via MIDI kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmjJeIOcbLiiaZo

@@tonelab It's mostly not applicable to the s700 at all. The s700 and x7000 are much more limited, though still very cool. It is interesting to see what they carried over from the s700/x7000 (design language, interface style), to the s900 as well as what they carried over from the s900 into the future.
