As a car wash attendant, this feature is the bane of my existence, because it comes on by itself and no one ever knows how to turn it off. I found this video while Google-ing how to turn it off. That being said, thank you very much for this video. It came in very useful today.

What kind of gearbox is it, is it a 7-speed steptronic double-clutch, if so, can I turn off the engine in D or R mode, then the gearbox will automatically switch to P mode and the parking brake will be activated.

On Mercedes cars you don’t need to press a button for brake hold the car does it automatically if you are on an incline.

For BMWs with this button, Is the setting remembered between drives or do you need to enable it every time you jump into the car? In my M235i, I don't have this button but I do have the functionality and it's always enabled.

Since passing my test in 1983, I’ve almost exclusively driven automatics and have never used the handbrake in any of them; I merely put the transmission in Park. Autos’ inherent idle speed “creep” means the vehicle is held on all but the steepest hills anyway so why do we suddenly need an Auto Hold function?

Auto Hold is not used for parking. It's used when you are stopped at, for example, a red light. After coming to a complete stop in traffic, the Auto Hold feature is engaged, which means you can take your foot off the break pedal without having to apply constant pressure to it or putting the car in Park to prevent the car from rolling. (Who put their car in Park at a red light anyway?) It's one of those unnecessary but very convenient feature for lazy people (like me).

Well, the system is ON but not in operation until you come to a halt using the footbrake. That's how it works anyway in my VW Golf. My AH function once activated with that button stays ON or at least is remembered when I turn off the car and then use it again.

Loved it on Mercedes but have it off on my 4 series now. On Mercedes you’ll activate it by pressing the brakes real hard, the bmw just does it everytime you come to a full stop. Really annoying

Don't get confused with Hill Start Assist and Auto Hold as they're not really the same. HSA only holds the car for 1.5 to 32 seconds when the footbrake is released whereas AH holds, seemingly forever.

The Auto hold isn't even available in the 218i. It's only available in automatic transmissions. I miss my old VW Passat to be honest. BMW in general has more new-fangled networking and app features, however, VW in general make the driving experience a lot more by incorporating features that are plain common sense and good driving habits.

Terrible feature. My car had this engaged from the dealership when i got it, and i thought something was wrong when i put the car into drive and it didn’t move 😆
