You are a next-level technical artist. This is one of the most impressive things I've seen introduced to the Blender community. I bought it. I love it. It works out of the box beautifully. This tutorial was extremely helpful too. It really gets me wondering what other kinds of art styles are possible to make filters for? Cubism? Or just different kinds of brush strokes, like more circular dabs, or splatters...or watercolor!? Oh yeah, and the normal maps used to make the impasto is a "stroke" of genius.

Stunning- i'm guessing this takes advantage of the fact that eevee will not refract other refractive objects (otherwise each stroke would be showing the strokes behind it and not the scene). This means there's 2 potential issues: 1. I'd bet good money you can't make a painterly version of a refractive object like a glass flower vase. 2. It's possible future versions of eevee WILL allow for multiple refraction passes, in which case this method will be unusable...
@Tradigital
@Tradigital Жыл бұрын
Yes, that is technically why it will not work in cycles. If that time does come, I’d honestly see them making it an option, because there are some attributes of the goo engine that do the same and that is used by quite a few studios.
@estefez
@estefez Жыл бұрын
@@Tradigital If you set cycles to only have one Glossy pass would that get it working? I'm guessing no. BTW if anyone DOES need multiple refraction passes with eevee- i've figured out a solution using the Solidify modifier and multiple materials: one refractive, one nonrefractive.

This is very interesting, and more complex than I can understand. One thing I noticed in your videos is it doesn't look like the paint defines the planes of the cube. A painter would make strokes in different directions for each plane, each side of the cube. Objects would be reduced to a low poly representation, with each polygonal facet being brushed in a different direction. Is this possible with your filter? You explain about the line art, but I'm not sure I understand. To me, lines are not as important as planes. Had you considered using the tissue feature of Blender to apply strokes to object planes?
@Tradigital
@Tradigital Жыл бұрын
Hey! I recommend you watch my second video on this project that explains how it works just a bit more. I do agree that planes are important. I will keep that in mind as I continue to update the project. The main thing I used the lineart for is to keep the overall detail of the scene while retaining the direction of the edges.

Hey! So it does not work in cycles. The only thing you can do is render out your scene without the filter in cycles and then change over to eevee and input the cycles render into the input at the top of the geometry nodes modifier list. This will take the scene that you have in eevee while using the colors and values from the cycles render.

Opacity on the filter? Not sure exactly what this could be. Is it areas between the strokes? If so, just raise your minimum stroke size up a bit to fill in those areas. It could also be your clip range on your camera. Increasing that also tends to help if there are clipping issues.

I am not directly earning money with these videos/posts, they are mostly educational, but in a way I am often linking to my own products that are for sale or free (even though my earnings are minimal and not able to support me yet). This is a post processing effect so make sure you have your final rendered image and open the .blend provided in blender 3.5+. Now, open the image in the image editor, and then select the filter and add the image to the image input under the modifier properties. Once you do that, follow my in scene instructions on adjusting the resolution and magnitude settings to get a better result where the strokes follow the image. Hope that helps. Most of this filter is pretty self explanatory once you get into it.

@@Tradigital Hello, i just got the pixel pasto, is there anyway to make the strokes not randomize on every frame of my rendered animation?
@Tradigital
@Tradigital 8 ай бұрын
They technically are not randomizing per frame. They are following whatever the animation does. So if you have a lot of high framerate movement, the filter is going to do the same and seem quite jittery as it tries to keep up, but if your animation is slow and doesn’t make sharp changes, then the filter will follow this and do the same. I would recommend rendering out in a very low fps between 6-12 to get the desired look you are after. This effect is not made for high FPS because that would be unrealistic if it was all handpainted in real life. For instance, the Van Gogh movie from a few years back that was completely hand painting locked itself to 12 frames per second and sometimes even went lower. that was a monumental task as you can guess with the thousands of paintings having to be completed.

Yes, that can be removed. What you’re seeing is the area light above the canvas. I added that for dark scenes where there is no light on the filter itself. Hey, sorry for the late reply. It’s hard to know exactly what could be happening here without taking a closer look at the file. Best thing I can say is it is probably your mesh density that is causing issues, but if you are probably going to want to look into your system specs as well. This is a pretty heavy filter and it isn’t meant to be used through animation testing. It is more of a composite effect that you enable before rendering to give it a cool effect on top.
@LemeMeek
@LemeMeek 6 ай бұрын
Oh it's totally alright! It was a consistant problem with all of my scenes and files, my system is pretty beefy. I reduced my mesh densities with lower-poly substitutes and it vastly improved the performance of the filter. I am just so used to high poly I didn't realise it's pretty impractical for still painting-type renders! @@Tradigital
@Tradigital
@Tradigital 6 ай бұрын
It uses the mesh data to generate line art that then influences the flow, scale, and density of the paint strokes. If your mesh is super high poly then it will just take an extremely long time for the line art to compute, or it will just crash straight up. One solution would be to not include your objects in the scene collection and instead just make a new collection with a curve object. You can draw out what you want the flow to follow instead of using the mesh data. Not ideal for animation since it will change overtime, but it will help with performance a lot

So this is most likely one of two things. 1. your opacity settings. If you raise the minimum and maximum opacity to 1 then you should start to see less blending and more bump between the strokes. 2. Amazing. Question: is there a way to have the stroke direction to be aware of the edges somehow? for example, the left side has noticeable stroke direction that follows along the edge which seems "natural" to me, however the strokes between the right side and the top sides are ignoring the edge line and going into each sides, which results in the edge feels beveled. Though it's tiny little aspect compared to how polished the end look is, was just wondering if that's something that the filter can solve somehow. Anyway, Great work. Love the filter.

Hey! The main reason is because of how the line art is created. I just need to keep improving the way that the lineart is being created because to be honest, it isn’t perfect and requires quite a bit of tweaking to really give the final result. This is my next big plan is just improving that method as far as I can in the geometry nodes.

Hey so this is actually more heavily CPU bound then GPU since it has to compute the mesh information for every single frame. One thing that can definitely improve things in the most recent 4.2 version of blender is using a bake node at the very end of the node tree in the geometry nodes panel and then baking out the animation sequence before the render. This will definitely ease up the processing, but be aware that if you make any changes, you will need to delete and re-bake the cache.

Baking the result to a 3D model?
@Tradigital
@Tradigital Жыл бұрын
There isn’t really a good way since this is a projection plane. The only way would be using window mapping with a render, but if you ever rotate the model it will look wrong. Since the line art will always change depending on the animation, so will the strokes. Baking it would also lose the edge breaking along the line art which will heavily break the initial effect.
@zetsology

@@Tradigital maybe doing a bake from multiple sides and then combining textures would do something useful for objects with UVs. That way objects could be used outside Blender.
@Tradigital

@@zetsology yes, that could work, but just be aware that it will not have the same effect in the end since the edges will not be broken and the stroke direction will all be random. Hey, it’s a vertex group. So if you want a specific area to be detected as a line, you can select those edges, add them to a vertex group, and then rename that input (additional line art) to the same name as the group. Another option is you can draw curves in your scene and if they are in the scene collection, it will separate them and use those curves as line art.

After using this filter for a while, there's one thing I wish were different. When I animate an object that is in the collection, then all the paint strokes change; that can get disorienting; it's too noisy. If animate an object that isn't in the collection, then none of the strokes change at all, and it looks like something is moving behind a strange pane of glass (which it is!). I could render the still background separate from the animated object, and that helps the disorientation a little, but all the strokes of the animated object are still going crazy. What I would love is if the paint strokes moved with the animated object, but didn't recalculate with every frame, but rather just moved with it, as if the substance/body of the object were made of these paint strokes. I know, that's not really possible with a filter. But could we generate these kinds of strokes on the material of the object?
@Tradigital
@Tradigital Жыл бұрын
Hey! I wish that were possible honestly. I’ve tried to think of ways to make that possible. Biggest issue is that the line art of the scene is going to constantly change if your objects or camera are moving. This in return effects every single stroke since they are all being influenced in density, scale, and rotation from that line art. The best thing to do is think of this filter more as a stop motion filter and less like a real time. I recommend lowering your frames per second to between 8-12. This will drastically lower the disorientation of the animation. Other than that, there currently is no perfect fix to this problem without completely rethinking the entire process.

@@TradigitalReally great work, instant buy! Maybe a possibility for to apply it to motion would be to draw te strokes once at the beginning, somehow save that, then create a list/matrix where every entry represents a number that is the chance of a specific stroke being updated according to the new line art. With every passing frame the number/chance is increased or in case of a stroke update it is reset to zero. Optionally the addition of a weight map ( maybe according to the speed of the objects) would allow to update the fast moving parts more frequently? Just an idea I got from looking at the way the magnificent Loving Vincent movie did it =) I tried to recreate the effect by placing strokes with geonodes, exporting every 24th frame to Photoshop, applying a good oil paint script and then feed everything into the AI EbSynth. Got some results, but still a long way to go ^^ If you are interested to have a look -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4TPYZVjr6ansMU
