I have updated my approach to work details a little since this. I now only do the following three custom details: Waiter - everybody does this: hauls refuse, food and burial. Early game i give one dwarf this role and make it so they only do it. This is to make sure stuff that can rot gets moved asap. Janitor - Only assigned does this: cleaning. This goes to monster hunters and its main purpose is to stop non-expendable dwarves from rushing out to clean blood in the caverns. More info in my cavern safety video. Vacation - Everyone does this: all crafting skills. Very sad people get this job as the only thing they are allowed do, lets them have fun making pretty crafts.

As an old school DF player It's been interesting exploring the Steam version. So far I'm liking the changes, and your videos have clarified some of my questions and concerns along the way so thank you!

Excellent video and the spreadsheet is a good way to explain it. Took me some time to understand how this worked versus the old method. Good to hear the baked in "auto labor" seems to work ok. Maybe I need to trust it more. (And I only do fishing that way too)

Yeah I think that once dwarf therapist comes out I might only use it as a quick way to check skills and just keep with the current system for assigning work
@kaligath6616 Жыл бұрын
Priority is often done by a algorithm such as current status of the dwarf so if a dwarf is currently not working being hes currently traveling be it to a job or not or working currently doing something then it takes those who are not working to do said job based on skill level.

really loving this series. quick question: my dwarves are making their own food and clothes automatically, is this intended? (I do have the game option set to automate wherever possible) so do I need to queue meal & clothing orders or is the auto system sufficient?
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
I think they only automate some tasks like looming thread into cloth and rendering fat. I don't think they go further and and make clothes/food though. I have a video coming up that goes into more detail on automaton via work orders and one thing I'll recommend there is to not keep auto loom on as you want some thread available for strange moods and your hospital

I noticed a potential bug, it's a theory for now: Enabling the Healthcare labours to Dwarves via the new work details system seem no longer work, resulting to where they can't tend to dwarves in multiple hospital zones anymore, they're now only stuck to attend a single hospital zone via the manual assignment method. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me confirm this, it's based on observations that I've yet had time to fully test.
@kevingriffith6011 Жыл бұрын
I haven't really experimented with this myself, as I don't tend to have multiple hospitals, but I think it should work the same way as temples and the like: You can assign multiple different zones to the same temple/library/tavern/hospital zone, and each of those areas will share staff, so if you want hospitals spread about your fortress to tend to your wounded closer to the places they were injured, that should be one way to do it without having to overload your medical workforce.

How did you get the numerical value from their listed skill? I’m not sure how to translate adequate, competent, etc
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
Those aren't real numbers - I just made it up to demonstrate how it selects Dwarves.
@masaufuku1735 Жыл бұрын
If you take a look at the dwarf fortress wiki (under the skill page), it has a list of what word correlates to what value up until legendary, which could be anything from 15 to 20. The third party utility Dwarf therapist also does that and can make a lot of things easier to do/see (even if assigning labors with it isn't as necessary/useful as it used to be). Note that it's still in alpha for the steam version (v50.x), though I haven't run into any issues with it yet.

This is incredibly useful, thank you so much for those quick tutorials! Love this game, but the learning curve is steep to say the least :D If you could answer this it would be a huge help... Been trying to use rock nuts to make oil for soap. But I think I may be doing something wrong in the processing. I can't seem to get more than the 5 seeds I started with so I never have extras to mill down to paste. If you could show (or just explain in a reply) I would be grateful. :)
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
I've never used rock nuts to make soap so I am not sure of how that process is supposed to go. Looking at the wiki it seems to imply that you can't get more than one seed back per harvest but I am not sure if I am missing something from elsewhere in the process that should net additional seeds. Typically I use tallow for my soap.
@VinceBlas Жыл бұрын
The quarry bushes that are harvested from a farm plot are useless until you use "Process to Bag" in a Farmer workshop to turn quarry bushes into a bag of 5 leaves plus one rock nut. The leaves can be cooked and the rock nut can be replanted or pressed into oil
@arendey4446 Жыл бұрын
@@VinceBlas It stayed at 5 seeds for a good while but eventually I got a few more. My guess is I had an incompetent farmer and it to him a while to learn.

is assigning too many tasks to each dwarf a problem? i assigned them to do quite a bit of tasks and now they are all depressed and stressed. Any fix?
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
It depends on what they are depressed and stressed about. Keeping people who hate the outdoors inside, making high value Taverns/guild halls/temples, making sure you have a steady supply of new clothes and making sure you have a good variety of food/drinks should cover most bases. For people in the lower two tiers of happiness you might need to check their memories and preferences to see if you can do something specific for them.

@@FurtherReadingTV it’s stuff like “unable to be extravagant for too long” or “lead an i exciting life for too long” i have no clue how to fix those
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
For Unable to Be Extravagant high quality clothing/jewelry can help with that. For lead an exciting life try putting them in the military so they can do some sparring.
@kevingriffith6011 Жыл бұрын
@@FurtherReadingTV "Recreational military squads" might be a good tutorial to have. It seems like every dwarf wants to fight (until there's actual fighting to do), but squadding up your whole fortress is both time-consuming and also a wild field of buggy, strange behaviors that can negatively impact your fort's productivity. (Things like dwarves only scheduled to train for one month out of the year continuing to train out-of schedule, even when assigned to said scheduled training)

One of my problems is the fact my doctor won't heal my damn hunting Dwarf who decided that attacking a panda with his bare hands was a good idea. Fucker has just laid up in bed for months.
@FurtherReadingTV Жыл бұрын
Hmm that's an odd one as it should be a priority labor. Maybe check what the doc is up to, and turn on more cancellation spam to see if maybe the job is getting cancelled?
@samw1501 Жыл бұрын
Do you need to assign a diagnostician? I found no treatment happened until my dwarves had been diagnosed. Also, I needed a separate surgeon for suturing.
@samw1501 Жыл бұрын
Look in the health tabs for your smart-arse hunting dwarf. You might see he's lying there with "diagnosis required".
@ericdetra1510 Жыл бұрын
I had the same problem at first; it wasn't clear at all that there was another step added that wasn't in previous versions. Once you have your hospital location set up, you just need to assign someone to the doctor role in it's settings. The doctor should handle all medical tasks, where the diagnostician/etc is exclusively just that. Those assigned to these roles will occasionally hang out in the hospital when idle, but do continue to do their other labors around the fort as well.
@Lexyvil Жыл бұрын
I may know why. The Steam version somehow broke the Healthcare labours, where it doesn't make use of them at all (potential bug?). For medical Dwarves to act, they need to be assigned specifically to a Hospital, which renders the labour countpart for Healthcare kind of useless. I haven't fully tested it but it's a theory based on what I noticed the other day. I really want healthcare labours to work again so that the doctors can make use of every hospital zone instead of always being bounded to one zone.
