Welcome to the fifth installment in our modal series. Today's spotlight is for the Lydian mode.
This is the formula of the Lydian mode: the one (root), major second, major third, augmented fourth, perfect fifth, major sixth and major seventh.
We will use the CAGED system for our scale shape. If you look closely you will find that the Lydian mode is really close to the Ionian mode. You only have to change the perfect fourth in the Ionian mode and replace it with the augmented fourth in the Lydian mode.
Our approach here is that you don't have to learn a lot of licks in order to play in Lydian. Instead, you need to learn the language and approach your lines as words.

You did a run at approximately 57 seconds into your tutorial [ Lydian Mode ] that caught my attention. For some time now I have been trying to figure out what the guitarist was doing. Hopefully in the near future you could give a short tutorial video on this subject I would greatly appreciate the lesson thank you.

Hi David I love your teachings and have just signed up for your free tutorials which i find really helpful, but I don't know if it's me being stupid but I think it would be helpful if you could explain the chords you are using for the backing for that mode and why the chord sequence affects what mode you would play a particular mode or scale against. many thanks and keep up the good work

When you talk about the backing track as some people to have a conversation with I immediately imagine the blueish purple Lydian people talking with their 8 tentacles or something. Try imagine them too.

G lydian 4th mode of the tonic key D major so G lydian is the D major scale starting on G and ending on G the octave thats it. More importantly is what chord turn it into a model progression.

Want to ask a question, in A Aeolian mode, the 2 and flat 6 are the most important note as you explained in the previous lesson. Please, what are the most important note in G lydian. I know the #4, what other notes are important when landing like you said for Ionian modes (1,3,5 and 7) ????

Loving this series! I feel like I'm close to understanding modes, but I can't quite connect the dots. What makes this chord progression Lydian? It's just G and A chords, so I would (with no knowledge of modes) say it's in the diatonic key of D (Ionian). Then I would improvise with the D major scale, which has the same notes. Is it just the emphasis on the Lydian tonic of G and its C# that gives the mode it's "mood" in my playing? If I was good at improvising, would a D major improvisation & G Lydian improvisation over the same backing track sound different?

Everything you said is true, however the bass in the backing track is playing mostly G so the sense of this being 'home' is strong. Additionally, fingers tend to be lazy when it comes to improvising things so you'll end up playing D major licks over the G lydian, licks ending on or targeting certain notes in one key won't necessarily work over another. It's best to learn the mode instead - listnening to how each note sounds against the backing track and what kind of 'function' it has for you personally. If you already know your pentatonics, realizing the full mode is simply a case of adding the other two in.
