the binary variable is called "approximate_match", so if it is true the vlookup function makes an "approximate match"

In programming, true/false is what you would call a boolean value. Since the parameter is called 'approximate_value' then setting it to 'true' would return an approximate value as defined by the parameter, otherwise, return exact. This is the nature of how the vlookup function was designed.
