I love your videos Laura! I have a gazillion voles on my property. For tree guards I take plastic pop/waters bottles, cut off both ends, then cut down one side so it opens, then put around the trunk. It only goes up about 4-8 inches but seems to do the trick. A great way to reuse plastic bottles. I raid the recycling can at work for them

What made the bark split on the tree ?

I think she's showing that tree because maybe a rabbit or other animal has been chewing on it. So now, she's protecting it from such.

My concern about varmints is actually more about bugs. The earwigs here are fierce and I worry that a tree guard give them even MORE places to hide. I’ve tended to paint mine, since rodents don’t usually chew on mine.

I have these guards and put them on late Fall. When do I take them off?

It all depends on your region and your needs. Most people don't remove them at all, but if you have concerns they can be removed in the early summer when the trees are least likely to be attacked and replaced in early fall.
