Please note, if you own a recent camera with UVC/UAC compatibility you may not need to use this method using a capture card on the HDMI output. You may be able to connect between the camera's USB-C port and your phone using a USB cable. I believe this is the case with some Sony cameras and Canon's EOS R6 Mkii, R8, and R50. If there is an app for your camera, such as Canon's Camera Connect, you can use also use that. However, my experience of Canon's app is that it can be a bit flaky and also very laggy (not great for video). Furthermore, the image cannot be made full screen in the app, whereas the image in USB Camera Pro used in this video, allows you to see the camera output full screen.

Although you can use this method to capture video on the phone, it's primarily for monitoring the camera output on the phone screen. Some recent cameras with UVC/UAC compatibility may be able to to connect directly from the camera's HDMI output to the phone's USB-C port, otherwise you will need the capture card. I tend to use the capture card with a USB-C output to minimize the number of parts.

Thanks for the video. I have Panasonic MFT cameras, each with wifi. Panasonic do their own control app and with it, I can control my camera, starting and stopping video as well as taking images. When using a gimbal, there are no bits of wire to get in the way. I made a shroud for my phone using plastic sheet with the inside covered in non-reflective foam sheet from Hobbycraft. I know I sound a bit ‘careful’ with costs, but I don’t think of that as a criticism. It is something of a relief not to be asked at the start of a YT video ‘What’s up?’, and I thank you for that.

That's good. My Canon camera also has a mobile app that does the same, however it's laggy and you can't monitor the video full screen. That's why this is a useful (and cheap) solution if you don't have something a Ninja V. It also allows you to record the overlay on the camera screen, which is useful if you're making HowTo videos about using the camera.

Your videos are high quality, enjoyable to watch and really helpful, thank you! Your videos have really nice voice audio qualities, especially this one filmed outdoors with a lav mic - have you made a video about the way you process your audio as part of your video editing workflow? Thanks
@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 5 ай бұрын
Thanks. No, I've not made a video about processing my audio yet, but plan to do so. I would say that recording outside is a great way to avoid the roomy echoey sound you can often get with lav mics, but you do get the problem of background noise (like neighbors cutting their grass etc.). That can be fixed if you are willing to pay for noise reduction plugins, but I've heard there's a new free AI plugin for Audacity that can clean up audio recorded in a noisy environment. I've therefore added this as a topic to cover in a forthcoming video.

I have the Camera Connect app and it has some good and some not so good point. It's good that Camera Connect allows you to control the phone remotely from your phone or tablet, but the downside is that you can't make the view full screen. That's OK on a tablet but on a phone the viewable screen is about the same or smaller than the camera's LCD screen. After connecting, if you find that the screen in the app is blank or frozen, tap on the USB icon to open a list of USB devices (there'll probably only be one device) and then tap on your camera/capture card again. That usually does the trick. Unfortunately I only found that out after publishing this video. BTW. @DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 9 ай бұрын
In answer to your points. 1) I don't see why not. In fact, I initially hit upon the idea of using my phone when looking for a better and inexpensive way to compose landscape images without having to spend £500+ on a Ninja V. 2) No. You need the video capture card. 3) Provided it has an HDMI output you'll be fine. If you want to use wifi then use the app provided by the camera manufacturer. Canon has Camera Connect, but I gave up on it because it's dreadful and I couldn't get the image to fill the screen (althougfh it's better on a tablet but the app and their wireless tech is dreadful). 4) Yes there is a lag, but slightly less than when using Camera Connect. This is meant as a "cheap and cheerful" solution costing under $20 that will give you a better view of the scene, to aid composion, than you'll get on the camera's LCD screen. It is not meant to be a cheap replacement for expensive external monitors and recorders, nor it is suitable where you must react to fast action, like sports and bird/wildlife photography.

For this method, and cameras like the EOS R and R6, you need the video capture. If you have a more recent camera that includes UVC/UAC compatibility, you should be able to connect the camera to the phone from the camera's USB-C port to the phone, using a USB cable (although I have not tested this). This allows your view to be bigger, which I find useful. If you also create how-to videos/blogs, it also allows you to capture the screen on the camera. That avoids picking up reflections and glare, as you often get when trying to photograph the camera's screen. So it's just another tool that has its pros and cons.

Thank you. You should be able to take photos on the camera and send them to your phone by using your camera's app. For instance, if you have a Canon camera, use the Canon Camera Connect App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 6 ай бұрын
The camera must have an HDMI output port, preferably clean HDMI output (you don't see any text or the over overlays on the back of your camera). I believe the Nikon D3300 can do so. You're phone must also be OTG compatible. If you are unsure about the latter, you can download an app (such as USB to OTG Converter) that will check whether your phone is supports OTG technology.

This set up displays your camera's screen on your phone and I have used it to give me a larger display when shooting landscape images (helpful to compose and focus). Don't, however, save the images by taking a snapshot on your phone. Save the images to your camera's SD card as usual, since the resolution will be much higher.

Hey! I have a problem; the app says that no device is connected. I'm using a mini HDMI to HDMI cable with a USB C male to HDMI female adapter. I am guessing that the problem is with adapter. I didn't buy video capture card.
@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 8 ай бұрын
Hi. USB-C to HDMI adapters are usually work the opposite way to the video capture card. They let you connect devices like a PC, phone, or tablet, to an external screen. This can be an HDTV, monitor, or projector, so you can watch movies or TV shows on a larger screen, or use a larger screen to a laptop. If you didn't get the video capture card, that's probably the problem. If you want to keep connections to a minimum, you can use a HDMI to USB-C video capture card, like I mention in the video. Good Luck.

some more questions: when your phone is connected like that , is then the battery from your phone also loaded whit power from the battery from the camera? Can you whit,the app ,your phone only using like a field monitor or is it also possible to control your camera through your phone?
@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 4 ай бұрын
The camera does not provide power to your phone. If you need to charge the phone you'll need the USB hub that I mentioned in the video, or use the adapter I talk about in this newer video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZjdaodooLSLjac This set up only lets you view what you would normally see on the back of the camera, but the screen size is likely to be larger and therefore useful. You'll need to control the camera using the buttons and dials on the phone. If you need to grab video or stills of what's on the camera's LCD screen (if you're making How-To videos or tutorials) make sure you check out the video I'm publishing this Friday. It includes footage of video recorded from my EOS R6 to my Samsung phone.

I'm sorry to hear that the app won't work on your device. First, make sure your phone is OTG compatible, that is important for this setup to work. If it is OTG compatible you could also try another USB camera app like "USB Endoscope app Android 10+". I've tried it on my Samsung Galaxy A53-5G phone and it works with the setup described in the video. However, the free version is limited to displaying 640p video. To display at 1080p resolution you need to upgrade (which has a one time cost). I hope that helps.

Can you use your phone to record video to keep camera from overheating? I'm using a canon m200 and a Samsung galaxy s20fe. I am new to digital photography and film with a proper camera.
@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 11 ай бұрын
You can use the USB Camera app to record your video, but you'll be limited in the resolution and video quality. I believe the M200 can manage 4K output, but most of these inexpensive video capture cards will stop you from capturing 4K. If you read the Amazon listings carefully, they usually say that they can accept a 4K input, but they will only output a 1080p signal. When I tried using a capture card that can output 4K video (CamLink 4K) the USB Camera app wouldn't display the video. Furthermore, the recording app probably won't offer you the best recording codecs that are available on your M200.

What's wrong with connecting via wifi or Bluetooth
@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 3 ай бұрын
I haven't found wifi or Bluetooth links to be successful when shooting video. Furthermore, one of the useful aspects of this method is that your can (if you need it) record reasonable quality video and capture still images on your phone (useful for creators who want to show the back of their camera). Although Canon's Camera Connect app on my phone lets me control my camera (which is a good thing) it's unfortunately very laggy and the image cannot be made full screen. Both of these points are not significant issues when connecting the camera's HDMI output to the phone since the lag is minor and the USB Camera app can show the camera output full screen. Each connection method has its advantages and disadvantaged, so having more than one cheap option can only be a good thing.

Yes you do need the video card. This setup is about using a phone as a camera monitor and not as an external recorder (such as a Ninja V). Although you can record video or photos onto the phone using the USB Camera app, that's not what this setup is really about. If you do record on the phone, the quality will not be as good as recording to the camera's SD card, so it's only something I would do if I wanted to have a record of the camera screen (eg if I were making a tutorial video).

@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 11 ай бұрын
The main problem you'll have is that most of the capture cards that mention 4K only accept a 4K input but output a 1080p signal. A dongle sized capture card that does output 4K@30fps is the Elgato CamLink 4K, however, this is now about $99, if you can find it at all. Compared to the cheap 1080p output cards, the CamLink 4K is 5 or 6 times more expensive, although the image quality is a little better. The other problem is that I don't see that you can change the resolution in the USB Camera Pro App. If you can get a CamLink 4K, it will improve the video quality slightly, although if it's just for monitor purposes I don't think the extra quality is worth the extra cash. However, I don't know what you intend doing, so you might think otherwise.

@DIYVideoStudio
@DIYVideoStudio 11 ай бұрын
@@ahmedelshall8946 I have just tested this on my EOR. Press the menu button and go to the red Shoot 4 screen. The bottom menu item is "HDMI display" with a picture of the camera's display + a monitor. Select this and you'll go into the submenu where you have two choices, the camera screen + external monitor or just external monitor. Make sure the camera screen + external monitor are selected. You'll get a warning that "Playback or menus are displayed only on screen of devices connected via HDMI". Then press the SET button and exit the menu. You can then connect the capture card to the camera and Android device (I used my Samsung A53-5G). You should get a message on the Android screen, tap OK. If the USB Camera app remains blank, tape the USB devices icon and tap on the capture card that is listed on the screen. The screen should then mirror the back of the camera. If it still doesn't work, disconnect everything. Close the USB Camera app, and switch off the EOS R. Switch on the camera again, reconnect, and hopefully this time the USB Camera app will show the feed from the camera. I tried this with both of the capture cards I mentioned in the video and it worked fine (eventually), but when I tried the CamLink 4K, although my phone recognised the CamLink 4K and was receiving audio, the screen remained blank. Although you will see the camera output on the camera's screen and your Android device, if you press the Menu button or try to playback video, the camera's output will only be visible on your phone/tablet. But you can use all the controls on the back of the camera. You won't be able to use the camera's touch screen, nor will you be able to use your phone/tablet as a touch screen for the menu. Using the EOS R is actually better than the later EOS R5 or R6. When you use this mode on those cameras you can't record to the camera's SD card and can only record to your external device. I hope this helps.

Yes you can still shoot 4K and LOG to your SD card, provided you use an HDMI setting on your camera that delivers an HDMI output and simultaneous recording to the camera's SD card. Although you can record video and photos to the phone, I don't recommend it for high quality capture. This setup is really about using the phone as an external camera monitor as an aid to composition, checking the focus, and other setting. It's not setting up the phone as an external camera monitor and recorder like the Ninja V.

Your camera should feed the external mic audio to the phone, but this video is not about recording your camera output to a phone (like a Ninja V). It's about using the phone as a larger monitor than your camera’s lcd screen. However, the app will record video & audio, but you won't get the same quality codecs as the video recorded to the SD card.

@DIYVideoStudio

Yes you can use the Camera Connect app. But you can't make the app image full screen and it can be very laggy and so unusable for video work. However, the camera app also has a number of advantages, such as being able to control the camera. This setup lets you have larger (better) view of what the camera is seeing that is reasonably lag free. It also lets you take screen shots of the LCD screen (with overlays), which is ideal if you're creating tutorials or How-To videos. So both this and Camera Connect have advantages and short comings.
