How To Use Your PlayStation 4 On A VGA Monitor

In this video Len shows you how to use your PlayStation 4 on a VGA monitor.
Since the video quality was kind of pathetic Len decided to add a step by step walk-through to achieve this goal (playing PS4 on a VGA monitor) down below.
What You Need:
Playstion 4
VGA Monitor
HDMI To VGA Converter (Here’s the one I bought www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-Conv...)
Micro USB Cable (www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-to-C...)
USB Wall Charger
Step 1: Connect you monitor’s VGA cable to the HDMI to VGA converter.
Step 2: Plug the HDMI cable part of the converter into the PS4.
Step 3: Connect the micro USB cable to the converter since the converter I used in the video requires external energy.
Step 4: Make sure all the necessary cables that draws power is plugged into the wall socket and turned on.
Step 5: Press and hold the PlayStation 4’s power button (on the system itself) until you hear two beeps. Your PS4 will now boot up into its safe mode at its lowest video quality possible.
Your PS4 controller needs to be connected via a USB cable to the PS4 for the following step
Step 6: Enter the ‘Change Resolution’ option and click on “ok”. When I first did this step it had me immediately pick my resolution. If it asks you too, then pick 480p so long.
Step 7: After your PS4 has restarted it will ask you to choose a resolution. Choose 480p so long.
Step 8: Go to the top menu bar on the PS4 home screen and scroll to the right and enter the ‘Settings’ option.
Step 9: Go down to ‘Sound & Screen’ and enter it. Also proceed to go to “Video Output Settings” and then enter the resolution option. You are now able to play around with the different kinds of video output your PS4 offers. In my case I know my monitor can output at 720p, but not 1080p.
Congratulations you are now able to use your PlayStation 4 on your VGA monitor!
NB: Apparently an HDMI to VGA converter which requires external energy can only be used.

If your converter has a micro USB port, then plug your USB cable from the converter into the wall socket. Try and see if you can plug it into the PS4 directly, but I can't make any guarantees.

As I mentioned in the video, you need a converter which uses a micro USB cable to received external energy from. It won't work otherwise. You will unfortunately have to return the one you have right now and get a different one.

Only thing I can think of is that the only resolution you can play in is 480 p. To play in 720 p, you should have a resolution of ABCx720 (ABC is the width, and 720 is the height), which you don't have. So, you either have to just play in 480p, or try playing on another monitor.

You're gonna have to boot the PS4 into safe mode. You have to press the power button and hold it for about 7 seconds. Wait until you hear TWO beeps. Then, you need to change your screen resolution manually like this.

After that, I turn off the console and I proceed to try to connect the monitor. Actually, the only time I could select a resolution has been when ps4 was connected in a TV.

@@gamerboi8840 You haft to order a hdmi splitter on amazon for around 12$. Plug the hdmi coming out of the vga to hdmi into the input side of the splitter then plug another hdmi cable from the output of the splitter into your ps4. Then you should be sit!

The quality is fine, and you explain everything well! What do you do about sound, do you just play the sound through headphones connected to the pad? I've just recently been given an old TV by my friend for my PS4 while I'm at uni, but it's a VGA connection.

I've tried using the headphones though the controller but for some reason that doesn't work. What I do use, however, is a normal speaker system. If it is USB powered, you can plug the USB cable either into a plug or do what I do, plug it into the PS4. The speaker will get its energy from the Playstation. The audio cable from the speaker system should be plugged into the HDMI to VGA connector and not the controller. I think that's the only way it'll work. Good luck.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, you need a converter that requires external energy. I don't think a non-external one will get enough energy from the PS4 to convert the signal from HDMi to VGA. Trust me, it's worth getting the external one. It will work and you will be able to play PS4 on any VGA monitor.

Second Update: This video's method works perfectly for the original/old-school PS4, and does not work for the PS4 pro or the PS4 slim. Apparently for the PS4 pro and PS4 slim you will also require a powered HDMi switch as well as a powered HDMi-to-VGA adapter. If you follow the method correctly and you are using a separately powered HDMi-to-VGA adapter for your original PS4, then there should not be any issues.

I couldn't see but did you plug a USB cable from the converter to a plug to get an external source of energy? Secondly, I got that screen message too the first time I tried to use my PS4 on a VGA monitor. You must do the following: Press and hold the PS4 power button for about 7 seconds. You HAVE to hear two beep sounds. After that your PS4 should boot into safe mode and there you can change the resolution. Make sure you hear the two beeps.

@@jojogaming6335 It is definitely possible to play your PS4 slim on your VGA monitor (and I am sure it will be possible whenever the PS5 comes out), but I do believe the PS4 slim has to use a slightly different approach. Are you changing the resolution in safemode? If so, are you choosing 480p, just to be safe? If all else fails, research shows me that you'll have to also buy an HDMi switch, like this one exactly (which gets powered) www.amazon.com/Switcher-Adapter-Supports-Definition-Repeater/dp/B01IX94SFW Here you would just plug the switch in-between your converter and the HDMi cable.

@@jojogaming6335 Unfortunately, after reading some more articles/forums and watching more videos, it seems you have no choice but to buy that HDMi switcher. To see if the switcher is really necessary, I would suggest trying out your PS4 on another VGA monitor. If there are no issues, then your original screen might just not be compatible for the PS4. Otherwise, if the problem continues you must get a switcher. Just to confirm, your converter gets charged by power right?

@@richarda7327 I am not sure Richard. The adapter looks fine to me and you say you are using a normal PS4. The only thing I can think of is trying it out on a different monitor. If the problem persists, it might be your adapter that is not performing the correct way.
