Great money shots of the chamber, throat, and bowl. A bit of cleanup work, gentle reshaping, and adjusting angles could add 30-40 hp.

Should I ever come back this way again, I will purchase some carbide burrs and go to town on one of these heads. For my first build, I did not want to go down that many rabbit holes. The risk of damage and the extra time involved was not worth the potential hp gains for a road car. For something like that I would prefer to practice on a Ford, not a Porsche 🤣😂. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

@@ManinaGarage you rebuilt a Porsche engine at home. That's an entire network of rabbit holes. You'd only need the sanding rolls you already have. "Gentle" reshaping is all you'd need. A little in the right place goes a long way.

Yet another super video. Sharing my experience, the last time I lapped valves in (in the UK), the grinding paste came in a double-sided tin, the course at one end and fine at the other. Listening to your opening attempt at grinding the inlet valves, it sounded like the paste you were using was coarse paste. It might be you can improve the finish and seal even more if you can obtain some fine paste and give them another session. Great to see you performed a leak test - that was a smart idea. When I was taught to test valves, petrol was used for a leak test. I get the feeling petrol might be better at finding any leaks. Finally, I was told to keep changing the point to point position between the valve and the seat so that all parts of the valve was evenly lapped with all parts of the seat - if that makes sense. Anyway, loved the video - mega-production.
@ManinaGarage2 жыл бұрын
Greetings Lester 🙌, You are spot on. At the machine shop they had a 2 part grinding paste with the fine paste for finishing up. I was VERY tempted to use the good stuff. At the same time, both the parts store manager and the owner of the machine shop told me not to bother, everyone just uses the basic Permatex. Now that one head is pretty much finished, going back over them with the finer paste does not seem like such a chore..... especially after what you have said here. I agree that gasoline would be a bigger challenge for the valves to hold back, for the first go, I felt more comfortable with water as I did not expect them to seal at all! 🤣😂. As far as moving the point to point position, that is one of the subtle benefits that make the hand method superior. I noticed in the videos that the angle I'm holding the lapping tool need to remain more straight on also. Thank you for looking over my shoulder 🤘😎
@laapulsford2 жыл бұрын
@@ManinaGarage You know successfully lapping in valves is properly difficult and needs real skill. The proof of the pudding is the final leak test and you have clearly cracked it. Well done. Really looking forward to the first turn of the key - very exciting. Apart from a VW 'W12' engine, the flat 6 911 engine is one of the most challenging rebuilds and so far your endeavors have been on the money. I suspect this has been enabled by hours of meticulous research and preparation.
