I used the wood softening veneer you suggested with blue paper towel on mappa burr, the softener absorbed the blue from the paper on the burr and now is all blue and destroyed...

Great to tip regarding the tape. I've been using normal masking tape and fighting the issues with it.. Unfortunately I can only find sources in the UK and not Germany for that veneer tape :(

Belgian here, i had great results with purple Deltec tape, i used alot of it on the backside of a marquetry project. It's less sticky than yellow masking tape.

Before veneer tape was invented, hide glue was the trick for all the veneering work (and also most woodworking)

This is an untrue statement that you pulled out of your ass. Shakers actually had many pieces of furniture including veneered beds and wooden veneered wallpaper that they often used in homes.
