Church authority comes directly from the Apostles, who received it from Jesus Christ. It is important to be in communion with this line of succession and not a group who broke communion from that line.

You break from that line when you forgo their teachings and add your own as the Catholic church did. Just because you can connect yourself back to the apostles does not mean you are teaching what they were teaching.
