Well I tried getting up at 4am but honestly, after a week of trying, it ended up being 5am instead and I am ok with that. The last couple of days I'd been waking without an alarm at 5:01am. I hope I continue with this as I have been really enjoying my time alone in the morning. With the extra time I have, I take a little longer shower and put on my make up. I also listen to a new found favourite podcast. For me, it's very nourishing to self care this way and it's the only time in the day that I can do this.

Since you asked for comments...I love your channel, but have minimal interest in waking up early. I'm a night owl through and through. For me, my journey has been more about accepting my night-owl-ness rather than trying to force myself to be an early bird. I still get everything I want to accomplish in a day.
@tanjastraumberg3 жыл бұрын
Same here. As a mother you need to adopt your time to the kids rhythm and I'm happy to go back to my night owl life because I really know, when I'm the most productive. I love being awake and creative when everyone else is sleeping, but to me it's on the end of my day, not in the mornings!

This is a really cool message to get out there! And this is coming from an early bird. I love waking up early, it's when I'm most productive/happy. However it is important to realize what works for you not for everyone else. I have the luck of having mostly night owl friends so I kind of had a similar experience. If the complete opposite in regard to the time.

A useful thought for getting to bed in the evening is to think "whatever it is I'm doing right now I can do just as easily when I wake up". Which is especially true during lockdown. As someone who codes or works on pixel art as a hobby it's hard to 'turn off' sometimes. I found having that mental dialogue can help. Even if only a little bit.

I enjoyed the video, and the steps you mentioned are useful actionable items, which I appreciate from anyone making videos about a lifestyle change. I would be remiss if I didn't point out that a lot of your tips require buying things, and I can't afford to buy new outlets and timers and machines. Also, some of us truly can't make this change for physical reasons outside our control, like being disabled or chronically ill, or relying on prescription medications that mess with sleep. I'm not saying that your video was harmful, I'm just making a note that your tips are not accessible to everyone or universally applicable. Regardless, I'm always excited for new lefie content.

You're onto something here, for sure. I think the key to "getting up early" is mainly GET ENOUGH SLEEP. It's torture to wake up at 4 if you fell asleep at midnight - it's simple if you went to bed at 9. The other principle you mention is to consider the morning an attractive time, and arrange something(s) you enjoy to help you look forward to it. Thanks for your videos!

I loved this video. But it's pretty hard for me personaly because sometimes I do wake up early for two weeks, but because I have chronic health conditions, sometimes I stay up all night in pain and sometimes I sleep all day to cope because of the fatigue from the pain - these episodes "reset" my sleep schedule and they happen frequently, so it's really hard and tiring to sleep and wake up at regular hours. As I'm getting older, I feel it's getting harder and harder to fight against it and I've been questioning if it really makes sense to me to spend so much energy struggling with something that doesn't really impact anyone else. But, to have a sense of "routine", I started to set a second clock in my phone and computer with the timezone I wish I woke up so I feel like my day has "structure" despite of the apparent chaos and it helps me feel better and be a little more productive (if I wake up at 4pm, for example, I set my dual-clock to 8am so I know what I'm supposed to be doing at that time). It's not the ideal, but, after years struggling, I think that embracing it without judgement and finding ways to cope was the best solution I found so far.
@jh57393 жыл бұрын
I set up my coffee maker right next to my bed & program it to start brewing at 4 AM! The coffee smell slowly wakes me, my alarm goes off a couple minutes later, and I can turn my alarm off & flip on the lights without leaving my bed. I put a clean mug & some sort of non-perishable food set up next to my bed as well. I don't have to leave my bed until I'm fed & caffeinated, at which point it is far easier! Especially in the winter. I also eat a second breakfast around 8 AM that is more nutritious than whatever I ate at 4 haha

I started getting up at 4am after your last video already, and it has been great for productivity and mood! I don't even need to trick myself in the morning, I'm just excited to get up in the morning, work on my project, go to work, >actually relax< after work without feeling guilty for being too dead from work to progress on my own stuff, and then go to bed early so I can be excited in the morning again. I haven't been able to put in exercise yet, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Thank you, Lefie, you've delivered the right push at the right moment.

I wake up at 4 whenever possible (whenever my toddler has let me sleep through the night). It is my time to go out, walk/run, get fresh air, think out loud, whatever. I can only use the vibrating alarm on my phone so I don't wake anyone else up, but I always have iced coffee waiting for me in the fridge. Knowing that my coffee is ready for me right after I drink a big glass of water is the best motivation I have, haha. Well, that and having silent, peaceful time to myself. 20:26 "Or, you could just work harder, make a whole bunch of money, and hire a butler to do it all for you" For those tempted to go down the jesting butler route, know that this is a shortcut to depression. While it's stressful and tedious to do your own chores all the time, from making your own coffee, getting your butt out of the house to go grocery shopping, or cleaning the dishes after a labor intensive home cooked meal, you will appreciate that you accomplished those tasks off your to-do list. It's part of being an adult, and trying to self sufficient in areas where you're capable and at least somewhat willing. Your body will reward you with endorphins to congratulate you on accomplishing challenging tasks. You get none of that by outsourcing everything to a butler (or a robot, if you're reading this after the year 2042). Accomplish something for yourself as often as you can every day.

I did this for some time years ago and I felt like I didn''t get the same kind of rest. It made me anxious about falling asleep on the right time and I didn't accomplish the goal I was working for (I was studying six to eight hours everyday for a big exam). I was super moody because of the schedule and I felt angry that the "sacrifice" didn't pay off at all. Now I sleep until 7 am and I feel actually refreshed every morning.

Same here 😩 Still, I found that when I manage to sleep between about 10PM and 4AM then I'm significantly more likely to be well rested after maybe 8.5 hours, and if I go to sleep at 3AM then I feel like shit even after 10 hours. It's just extremely hard for me to really go to sleep early because a) self-hatred, b) replaying my bad decisions or anticipating future problems and c) revenge bedtime procrastination 😳 So yeah, that part is totally awful... But in general, this really works to make one's brain more functional even on fewer hours of sleep.

It's not an easy thing to do. It takes a full month to be able to crack it. The only thing that I'm concerned about is running out of energy by the middle of the day. Because the earlier you get up and do things, then you are going to start getting tired earlier. But, I should be able to overcome that, if nothing else by a cup of coffee, LOL. My usual was waking up around 7am, rolling oit of bed about 720 then running around getting ready for work and stressed before my day even began. Now I get up, splash some water on my face, make a coffee, breakfast and have some spare time to either watch youtube or play Animal Crossing before actually putting my face on and leaving for work - it's magical. Even better on weekends when everything is done by 10am and I have a whole day ahead 😁 Love your videos! Gave me a much needed laugh at lunch today 🥰🤙

I’ve done shift work semi-frequently for over a decade, my circadian rhythm has always been screwy, and I’m prone to overthinking and getting excited about ideas late into the night and in the wee small hours. I also have a lot of trouble disconnecting from books/games/tv/or even things I’m not much enjoying. All that aside, there have been times when I’ve been consistently awake early, and I love it. I love the quiet, the cool, the sunrise, the extra time to feel ready for the day. Just need to work my way back towards it. Which will be easier when I’m no longer having one-two completely sleepless nights a week and a few less than 6 hours as well. But I’m working on it, and you gave me a few potentially fruitful ideas… thank you - the combination of good advice and someone I actually enjoy listening to is very helpful

I can get up at obscene hours and I've done it for months at a time but I'm an owl, I know this, it is a fact set in stone!.... I have a funky late night my brain, this brain of mine works much better at night (around 11 pm to 1 am is my best time), I am a night person! With regards the bed... admit it you want to jump back into that warm cosy bed - if you had a cat you cold have another hour or so napping and do that with the cat! That is a very sweet thing! I think Jonie Mitchel put it down well We just come from such different sets of circumstance I'm up all night in the studios And you're up early on your ranch You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail While the sun is ascending And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel... Stay well ;-) PS I still love your energy and work !

Dude your videos have been a life saver. this is the best advice for early mornings that I've ever heard. THANK YOU. I've started keeping water by my bedside for when i wake up, my happy light plugged in, and my energy aromatherapy lotion by my bedside too! I have a playlist set up for meditation, then music, then a guided yoga in the morning. I feel so much lighter in the morning.

Early. Started years ago to avoid rush hours since my work allowed flex hours. Got the most work in before others arrived.

i really liked your idea about replacing hours at night where you're essentially likely to lose control of time and replacing it with an hour in the morning for productive work/an extra hour in bed so you actually get 7 or 8 hours of sleep instead of the senseless 5 or 6hrs of sleep followed by zombie mode all morning. I've started incorporating it into my schedule and i feel more creative and less likely to bite someone's head off in the morning because i did something for me (i.e. either sleep an extra hour or had a productive morning) thank you! Edit FYI i wake up at 5.30~6am... sometimes 4am when the Ni-Ti loop hits me with an existential dilemma but those are rather special occasions xD

Also, allow time in the morning to do something fun and just for you. Whether thats reading, journaling, playing a video game... just start the day with something that you WANT to do rather than something you HAVE to do has been a game changer for me. (I have adhd so, i think for me and others like me... getting that dopamine flowing with something fun interesting or engaging is as important and a car having gas before it can get on the freeway. ) Anyway this changed my life. So I thought id share it. :-)

I usually stay up super late because i get alone time after people go to sleep, but it's a lot more productive for me to get up early and still have time alone in the morning! thanks for the tips

I get up at 5:50 most days. I can’t get through the day without napping. I’m like a toddler 🤦♀️ Luckily I’m home from work by 3:30. Just curious if you nap when you get up so early?
@shylacogar19433 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I started cutting way down on my carbs and upping the veggie intake. It has helped immensely with my need to nap. Don't get me wrong, I still love naps, but I don't HAVE to take them.
@tippytoe77163 жыл бұрын
@@shylacogar1943 I eat a low carb low sugar diet and still head for the couch every afternoon. 20-30 min and I’m a new woman.
@k8con3 жыл бұрын
some people just need to nap - everyone is different! if your schedule allows for it, why not? :) i get up at 5:20, but due to my schedule, don't really get to slow down until 6pm. I have a 5-10 min break at 3 and throw myself onto to the couch. I would kill to be able to nap!

I use the smart lights, and alarms that make you get up. I really like the fan idea and might actually try that just to give me a jolt.

I love getting up early in the summer. In the winter, not so much.. but still. Rushing in the morning is the worst start to the day. Currently I wake up around 7 and get started with work (from home) around 8-8.30 and it's great. In the summer I'm usually getting up around 5-6 and starting work at 7-8. I guess I have good habits with regular bedtime and so on. So I'm not sure why I'm watching this video... I guess I just like your videos Lefie :)

It's 1am here and I desperately need to get my circadian rhythm back on track. I always stay up very late and hate myself the next morning... every single day. 😭Thanks for your suggestions. I will definitely do that the next couple of weeks. Love your apartment by the way. 😊

This time I'm early! Love your videos and the music you use in some of them. I wake up early to exercise or to go out for a walk with lockdowns happening 😷. I believe is a great way to set the tone for the rest of the day 😎🙌🏻! Great best practices and I will definitely try some 🤔 Great topics Lefie, sending you great vibes all the way from Mexico 🤗!

I have no trouble going to sleep but I am really bad at getting up unless there is something I HAVE to get done. Your video changed my perpective a bit because other morning routine videos made me feel like I should be doing really zen things in the morning (meditating, taking a walk, etc. For which I will never be able to physically motivate myself to get out of bed) and maybe I should just be doing what works: give myself a task as early as possible and with as little as possible time to do it and then I can have an hour or two for chill morning things... breakfast, reading, reading the news, making my bed after I've succesfully woken up - that's my first achievement of the day.

Thank you so much for this! My horrible sleeping schedule is slinging me further into my seasonal depression and there's really no need to go all out and get up at 4 am for me, but 7am instead of noon would benefit me so much.

We’ve just started doing a 5am wake up inspired by your last video. So far the morning brain-lag is no worse than it was waking up at 7. We’re going to give it a month and see how it goes. Hardest part so far is that it’s dark until 7:15 at our latitude so it’s hard to feel like we should be awake!

Hey! I was wondering if possible you could do a video for people who live at home/share houses and maybe just have one room for everything! (Work, sleeping, socializing, relaxing) and how to create your own spaces/split up your room to be more functional and separate.
@perfectlyadaptable3 жыл бұрын
You have to be pretty creative with these suggestions if you don't live/sleep alone. I like the idea of putting in earbuds and listening to a podcast/music first thing. I likely won't be able to do anything with lights but I think I could use like a heating blanket that turns on early because I've found the cool temp that helps me go to bed at night becomes a hinderance in the morning. It is helpful to know the underlying reasons for these tips (sensory bombardment) so that I can adapt it in a way that works for my living situation. Ultimately it really does come down to self-motivation...finding your why; most if not all habit-changing boils down to if your mind is in the right place. Nice video!

I started getting up a little earlier because I hated the stress and chaotic feelings in the morning when everything hits all at once after 9am- no time to even breathe. Thanks so much for the videos on getting up earlier.

I have terrible allergies, and usually, the only thing keeping me from enjoying my mornings is the suuuper dry throat! But as they're not as usual in Germany, I haven't thought yet about buying a humidifier, so thanks for the reminder 😁
