How to Walk-6 Quick Tips: 1. Keep vertical posture with the eyes forward. No lean forward or backward. 2. The arms should swing straight forward on the side opposite the swing leg and then drop back to a neutral position. 3. Keep the pelvis in neutral position, without a forward or backward tilt. 4. The rear leg extends the body, powering the swing through. Do not power with the swing leg or you will end up duck-footed. 5. The palms should face the outside of the thighs, not the front. 6. Feel facing forward with a gentle heel placement and roll forward.

Proper walking technique is critical to maintaining health of the spine and other joints. There are very many patterns of walking that place extra strain on the body. These 5 tips can help you get started analyzing you own walking patterns so you can see if any improvements are needed. Poor walking technique is often unrecognized because it can take years for damage to occur and for symptoms to develop. Some of the problems that can be caused are plantar fasciitis, bunions and hammer toes, neuromas, ankle tendon dysfunction, patellofemoral syndrome, knee arthritis, hip arthritis, IT Band Syndrome, and chronic lower back pain.
My channel focuses on teaching you exactly how to control your core to optimize the way you walk and perform other activities. My system is called The Walking Code. I developed this system based on my medical experience as a physician for 25 years, but more importantly from the knowledge I have gained from teaching dance for over 2 decades and practicing Tai Chi for over a decade. These three practices have blended together to form The Walking Code.

As an RN, we were taught proper body mechanics and had to re-certify yearly. But WALKING was never incorporated into the curriculum. Your contribution to this body mechanics issue is so needed and I appreciate this. Even with physical therapy I was given after a severe leg fracture, this was not emphasized. Very informative.

My childhood is full of bullying due to my walking style, people called me robo.. I ignored that in my childhood, now I am 20 and still has this issue. People talk behind about my walking.. People laugh at me seeing me in the classroom, it's nightmare for those with high self esteem like me... Soon I will complete my graduation and I get a job, I am confident that I am going to face these bullies again... So right know I will start walking practice daily morning .., What I want to say is, to all the brothers who realised that they're walking odd, please start practicing to walk properly,... Why is it important NOT to throw arms backwards behind the body? In speed walking it apparently helps to increase the stride length. How is it different in regular walking if you want to walk fast?
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 2 ай бұрын
If you throw your arms back, it means you are overstriding. There will be increased impact and the joints. It is better to increase speed by increasing your rotational speed rather than pushing. I linked a video for you on your previous comment. You can also search my channel for my video showing 4 different techniques for walking faster. I demonstrate what to do with your hips that will make the arm throw back. It is an option, but much more impact. Longer rather than quicker steps. I also demonstrate the power walk technique that causes the elbows to flex at 90 degrees, which is another option.

Should your front knee be bent when your front heel hits the ground?
@ToddMartinMD

No, it should not be bent. It should also not be locked out. It is passively extended. The knee bends right after heel contact, and that is on of the factors that softens the step.

It seems weird since we obsess over so many things that are way less significant. I think the reason is that doctors are not taught how to walk, much less teach it. So, they put all the focus on muscle weakness or tightness that can be worked on by a therapist or blaming body weight. They don’t have a tool to help people improve the way they walk, so they don’t mention it.

@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD Жыл бұрын
Good work on the correction so far. If one of you legs is swinging out, it means you are using the hip on that side to lower the swing through instead of using the standing leg. This is almost always the case with duck feet walking, so you probably are still doing that to some extent. I would watch my How to walk properly, Pill don’t push video.

When you say arm swing behind the body if it's significant is that a walking style or someone's style or is that a problem?
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD Жыл бұрын
It’s a problem because it indicates something wrong in the posture and hips. The arms don’t move on their own. They are reflecting the movement of the core. If the arms are swinging back forcibly, that is going to be accompanied by poor alignment of the joints and asymmetric weight distribution.

I've readed tons of advice and try to put it in my daily walk and nothing works.. another thing is probably acne, mine is not that extreme but its still a lot, but I don't really care and I've been takin care of it properly, and im still in my teenage years so Im not stressing at all, after all I've been feeling good about my face because i think I'm kinda good looking (fr) I don't think I can explain everything, so many things to handle and school is starting soon😭😭😭 I don't care what others think of me, I just want to feel myself, I want to feel satisfied with my self, and fact here is im a boy and 15 y/o

I’m not sure if this is correct because if you walked barefoot you would not heel strike so this is not a natural way to walk. I would say to walk barefoot and then try to emulate this with shoes on for a natural walk.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 18 күн бұрын
I walk barefoot all the time and it is the same thing. Millions of people all around the world walk barefoot all the time, some even never having worn shoes, and they still walk heel first. Fossils from early humans, long before the invention of shoes, show that they walked heel first. It’s just a fact. If you can’t walk barefoot heel first, it means your baseline walk is not correct.
@livewithaffection6905
@livewithaffection6905 18 күн бұрын
@@ToddMartinMD Really? I don’t think so. I’ll test it out some more barefoot and get back to you. But I am pretty sure that you are wrong.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 18 күн бұрын
@@livewithaffection6905 You testing it out only says something about you, not what the truth is. You can prove it this way. Link me one KZbin video from anywhere in the world showing a group of people walking with or without shoes and using a forefoot strike while walking normally on level ground. Or look up any research paper or scientific article about proper foot strike walking, with or without shoes, and show me where I am wrong. Look up the Laetoli footprints. To be clear, we are not talking about running. We are talking about walking forward on level ground (not walking down stairs, where forefoot is the natural strike).
@livewithaffection6905
@livewithaffection6905 14 күн бұрын
@@ToddMartinMD Unless I am different than other humans, when I walk barefoot I don’t heel strike. I land on the balls or mid foot. I tried your way barefoot and my feet did not like it. Also, if you look up the works of barefoot Ken Bob Saxton, he will say the same thing. So, I think you are wrong, but modern shoes with lots of padding allow you to walk using a heel strike, but it is not natural.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 14 күн бұрын
I think you are ignoring all of the evidence that states I am correct, including the fossil evidence that shows our ancestors walked heel first and all of the evolutionary evidence that shows we were designed to walk heel first. Then there is the other obvious observational evidence. There are many groups of people who are walk barefoot for all or most of their lives. They all walk heel first. You can find plenty of videos, plus there are scientists who have studied gait in tribes where people don’t wear shoes. They all confirm traditionally barefoot people walk heel first. It is very possible for people who grow up in shoes to learn heel strike the wrong way and then not be able to do it correctly when they take their shoes off. If you really want to test your theory, try and find videos of people in traditionally barefoot cultures walking ball first. I guarantee you will find none because it doesn’t exist. Finding some self-described guru who supports the forefoot idea without evidence is not by itself any evidence. I notice you didn’t report back with any videos demonstrating what you are saying. Did you look?

Heel striking is a no no
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 3 ай бұрын
Since practically every person in the world walks with a heel strike, and every study of walking technique confirms this is right, can you link the valid source of information saying heel strike is a no no. I would love to check it out. A scientific article would be good. Please don’t post something about running.

I use to make the mistake.... of swinging my arms, back behind my body, when walking. Ps. But some people say "heel striking" shouldn't be done????
@ToddMartinMD

The people who believe heel striking is correct are incorrect and they also have zero evidence to base it on. I have many videos detailing why they are incorrect. You may see some KZbin videos expressing that opinion but there is no medical debate about this subject.

The heel strike is perfectly fine, but would be different in bare feet or flatter shoes. It changes naturally depending on the footwear.

Someone tell to video creator that toe has no cushion therefore anatomical speaking you are not supposed to touch the ground first with the toe. Thank me later or even better, educate yourself first in order to "teach" others wrong information!

You’re landing on your heels. Which is wrong
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD Жыл бұрын
And what exactly are you basing that on, considering that almost 100 percent of the people in the world walk heel first and every text on the correct human gait cycle correctly states that it is heel first. Just look up any diagram of the human gait cycle. And all people throughout history have walked heel first, even before the invention of the shoe, much less modern shoe companies. What is your expertise that overrides every single bit of evidence that heel strike is correct. No one ever responds to this challenge, but I am hoping one day someone with the confidence to comment that I am wrong will actually follow up with their evidence, other than Grown and Healthy said it.

@@ToddMartinMD I disagree on the heel landing first. You can search on it. You can ask those athletes who run. Watch bolt or any running competitors. They land on their front feet. After your reply I watched several videos and none of them advise to land on heel because it will harm your back and hip.
@ToddMartinMD

@@baigskt This video is about walking, not running. Normal walking is always heel first. I am not sure why you would look up running to determine what the correct foot strike is for walking. Look up foot strike with walking. Look up the walking Gait Cycle and you will see every reference is heel strike. There is no relationship between running and walking. If you want to use athletes as a gauge, watch a video of Olympic racewalking and you will see 100 percent heel striking. And also, studies do not support that heel strike running causes more injuries. But, I believe for sprinting, forefoot strike is best because it has a faster cycle rate.

@@ToddMartinMD i am talking about walking. I was generally saying look at athletes . If it was healthy to land on heels they would be doing that. Also look at kids . Human starts their walk on kind of toes. Because it has less chances to get slip. If you land on your front foot first on some slippery place you have more chances to stable yourself when your heels touch the ground. If you land your heels you will fall almost 100%

@@baigskt Are you trying to say that Usain Bolt and other runners WALK forefoot first? No they don't. I just watched Usain Bolt and many other runners walking around and they all walk heel first. Watch a football game and tell me everyone is walking forefoot strike. No they are not. You also ignored the fact that I already pointed out elide Olympic racewalkers ALL heel strike. And they walk super fast speeds for marathon distances. We also don't try to learn from toddlers who have no control yet of their core so they are essentially falling until they learn to control their bodies, and then they heel strike. Persistent toe walking in olde children is considered a medical issue and can be a sign of neurological problems.
