ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Walking should feel natural and relaxed. You should feel symmetrical and balanced. You should not be twisting, turning, limping, or hunching while walking. You should feel your butt, hamstrings, and calf muscles working when you walk. If you feel like your neck and shoulders hurt after walking, you have some work to do! Walking properly for long distances is good for your mind and body. Remember that human beings are designed / have evolved to walk long distances on a regular basis!

Thank you for sharing this. My frustration has been trying to understand if my body atrophied from being bedridden and the health issues I had then how damaged is my heart and my lungs and trying to be positive and encouraged but realistically understand how my progress should be. Have you seen people with overall weakness be able to improve their heart and lungs ?I eat very clean I’m very strict and disciplined. I don’t eat anything processed and I’ve been working on my health for a long time but my circumstance were very extreme, so just wondering if you have personally seen people improve on that level?

Ironically I have been hoping that you’d post a video on walking correctly and exercises that can help achieve this. I’m 62 years old and since the pandemic my physical health/fitness has declined significantly. I had debilitating lumbar back pain that has been coming and going since 2020. I live in constant fear of its return and have become increasingly sedentary because of it. Now I’m having issues with my knees. I’m in PT for right knee pain and on my first visit my PT manipulated both knees and now when I walk my left knee constantly clicks. I am so discouraged. I found your channel and have been watching and implementing your exercises religiously and for the first time in years am finding myself feeling stronger physically. I have scoliosis and walk hunched and I’ve recently noticed my gait seems off. I know I’m subconsciously trying to protect my back and knees by taking short and erratic steps. I’m looking forward to your upcoming videos and will definitely start the exercises on today’s video! While I can’t join the walk for your beautiful charity I will donate to them. They are truly unsung heroes. I am sorry for the loss of your father. And thank you Matt for all of your work and support to those of us who’ve lost hope along the way.

I believe walking is the one thing most of us are capable of doing our entire lives and I try to walk 2.5 miles daily. I would add the importance of walking on flat as well as uphill and downhill terrain, for it strengthens more muscles in the legs and posterior. Short burst of running while walking is also a great way of elevating the heart rate and reducing blood pressure. Great video and cause❤

How come you knew I needed this video??? Following a condition which compromised my bones and muscles and two major ops last year, I thought I'd do a bit of rehabilitation and be back doing Nordic Walking in no time. Not so!! Tore a ligament in my thigh/hip trying too hard. Am shocked at how weak my body is. What used to be an easy ealk now kills me. I've started to hunch and look at the ground. And the answer is - slowly does it, baby steps - just as you said. Thank you Matt. Love your workouts. I still haven't quite figured out how to support your channel with a donation - but I will 😊

Thank you for the video! I want to relearn how to properly walk and enjoy the views across town. This was rly informative ☺ Last month, I was so mentally fatigued from work, along with all sorts of pain across my body. Decided to shake things up by riding a cab in the morning, then walking all the way home afterward with my suit and backpack still on. The result was a 2 hour 3.8km walk... which is horrendous speed, maybe due to being sedentary for 10 yrs and had electronics for luggage. Did I do it again? No. But it restored my faith in walking short distances as a form of exercise, and I did feel a stronger desire to touch grass ever since. 😂

I recently ditched my trainers and switched to the old fashioned tennis shoes with the fairly flat thin souls. I've always been in socks around the house all day, so the switch didn't affect my muscles or tendons. I'm also walking the dogs instead of running them while I ride the 4-wheeler. Consequently, I discovered some healing herbs growing along our country road. Win/win.

June2023: I am happy I decided to go for "walk videos" first. And this is recent. Recently I have seen "a DC person" who told me to do what I would call "military posture", or "ballet posture". I thought, why not try it for a while. It's an alternative to "tai chi posture".. Let me see what it strengthens. What it does is use some thoracic muscles. And also I found myself doing "something" I was having a difficult time describing. After "tucking my tailbone under"/lengthening my spine = cancelling APT = finding a neutral pelvis, I found myself doing something else. I called it "pulling the front of my pelvis up out of my legs" which SMH didnt seem to describe much. Today I watched a video (about "doming" aka activating the Transverse Abd. which, if I am clear, I have heard called "Pull your bellybutton in to try to touch the front of your spine". I sure would like to hear your *much clearer words* Matt if you can tell what I am talking about. Thanks. You rock.

I signed up, but won't be able to participate. I live in Australia and the exchange rate is really eye watering right now, putting even the initial sign up fee right out of my budget. I'm so sorry. I'd been having problems with my leg arteries not getting enough blood causing a LOT of pain after walking for about 5 minutes. I've been receiving treatment for it since mid-January and yesterday I decided it was time to really test how able I am to walk. To my surprise in ten minutes I got way further than I've been able to in a long time. I did have to briefly stop (under a minute) a few times but nothing at all like I'd had for a long time in the past. It was a 20 minute walk and I was sore, but happy that I tried, succeeded and can return to doing one of the things I've always enjoyed doing. Tomorrow I'll try 15 minutes to see how far I get and then turn around and go home (and see how that second 15 minutes goes for me - often it used to take much longer on the trip back home due to pain. If that goes well, I'll be back to 5000 steps a day in no time!

I used to walk a lot but after years of health problems and weight loss I feel it is harder and harder to walk as my psoas/groin gets painful very quickly. I follow both foot pain fix and back pain fix programs and it helps a lot, but eventualy there is always one day when I walk too much and pain comes back, so I'll be glad if a video addresses this problem

Dear Host: Could you comment on this. I would suggest people to stand barefoot on a flat surface and have someone stand behind to see if your shoulders are symmetrical. Most of the times they’re not. You can even look at the inside of your old shoes - take the inserts out and see the bottom. You are likely to see one side is worn out more than the other. One of my shoulders was a bit lower so my podiatrist made a personalized insert to balance my shoulders. My insurance paid most of it. I walk 3-5 miles a day and this made a difference.

What about pain on one side that makes you limp? Should you not push walking on a painful hip? I still do everything, but walking distance is painful. I love to walk and miss my long walks that I used to do.

I dislocated my kneecap and had a grade 3 ankle sprain a few months ago. I became skeptical if I was using my body the right way and to it's fullest. Using your advice and some info from a few others, I've come to find out I lock my knees while walking and also that I lock my knees when standing or doing any other basic task... I've also found out that locking your knees is VERY BAD for your body. Locking the knees causes instability and weakens the knees over all. I've been locking my legs all of my life and now I'm 16. I feel like an idoit for not walking or standing the right way but I mean, how was I supposed to know. It's not like you get taught how to properly walk. But now, because of you, I know know how to walk properly.

Thanks Matt. I am a great fan. The video about hip pain solved my problem in one day, but I am going to suggest an important improvement to future videos. Sit on your right hand. If you can't find another way to keep your hand from waving, then sit on it until you come to a word you want to emphasize with a hand gesture. Why? Because, if you would underline every word in a letter, there would be no way to draw attention to the most important words. So save the hand gesture until you come to the most important word and THINK about the most appropriate hand gesture. Apart from that, you are a good communicator, but this is an irritating fault that you can fix right away, and it will be a HUGE improvement to your presentations.

I realized recently that when I walk I basically do a calf raise to propel myself forward wand just catch myself with my legs, does anyone else do this and or is it natural. If not how to fix?
