I hope you enjoyed this week's video! Comment below: what do YOU do to warm up at the piano?

Well, today I began by watching this excellent lesson. It is counter-intuitive but if you shower in cold water (or just cold at the end) your body responds with heat. Likely the same with wrists - which I will try. I do the 8 Brocade Tai Chi Routine in the morning before practicing. If it is sunny outside that is ideal. I just ordered The Perfect Wrong Note - love the idea. So thanks - and I look forward to watching your recital steam. Good luck!

Thanks! I understand the cold-shower method, and that has worked for me, but cold water on the hands definitely does not work for me. They do not get warmer in the slightest unless I actually warm them up. I think it's because the hands are extremities. Let me know if you have a different result! 😊

@@ThePianoProfKateBoyd I agree: I tested and cold water on hands leads to colder hands.

@@TheTmackey Might be because when it gets too cold, your body will want to direct the heat to the most important parts of your body, which are mostly on your core, so your extremities get less heat. And when the weather is hotter, your heat spreads more in all your body

I was enthousiastic after reading the title, but disappointed by the content. You are spreading a common misconception: warming up is not about being warm, it's about starting the aerobic glycolyse in the muscles, without which one will use anaerobic glycolyse, which is about 20 times less efficient, and which will deplete our energy (glycogen reserve or backup in the muscle). The warmth of the body is both a consequence of the muscle effort, and a requisite to have functionnal muscles; hence with cold hands, putting under warm water will increase the temperature and help muscle physiology, but it wont do the muscle warmup ! If the body is already warm, warm water won't change anything. A few other points that are missing: a good warm-up can take a good a mount of time; could be 1 hour. We need to warm-up all our most useful muscles, so doing scales for 30 minutes won't help with jumps; stretching is not warming-up, it can be dangerous if done cold; yoga instead can be a good way to do a full body warm-up and to get warm and ready to start with the piano warm-up. Good luck with your channel.

12:32 you are giving ill advice here. The way you show this up is basically killing lumbar section of your spine (do such movement more and you will see a doctor for sure). You should bend your knees, and move your butt back so the center of the mass of the torso is line with your feet. Since you simply L-bent your body, the spine has to work hard to maintain such position. For some time it can do it, but it will you cost you eventually, especially if you keep repeating it (and most likely you will -- when bending over table, when lacing shoes, etc). It i even more pronounced if you lift something, like bag from the floor.
