every instrument has a range of individual motions that i work on as warmups in order to get better at chops on percussion - and i'm going to be talking about this for specific instruments over the next few weeks!

The percussion dept head in college showed us all of these playing techniques. And then finished the lesson by saying, "When it comes to tambourine, just do what it takes to make it sound good. If that means throwing it in the air and shooting it with shotgun, then do it." Doc was awesome.

Rob Knopper thank you so much for your extremely helpful insight and experience in your videos! Your PDFs are very informative and detailed; I could not resist not subscribing! I am primarily a jazz drum set player but your videos offer a great help on technique regardless of which percussion instrument! Keep doing what you're doing and I can't wait to see more valuable videos from you!

I have loved watching all of your videos and using your PDFs for practice. I recently auditioned for a local community orchestra and your videos helped me a lot with my audition prep. I would like to buy a tambourine of my own so that I can get more serious about mastering the art of the tambourine (as you just demonstrated). What tips or recommendations do you have on a tambourine purchase?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 6 жыл бұрын
thank you! glad to hear they helped!! my favorite black swamps for all around playing are the combos - both of the combos work great for all around and i don't have a specific recommendation for one or the other. 10" double row combos - you can decide calf vs. plastic, but that's what I recommend for the jingles. good luck and have fun, sounds like a good time!

Thanks for the great recommendations! I went with the TC2 10" calfskin head. So great to be able to practice at home with a quality instrument.

Hi rob knopper, I got a question. when I practice the tambourine for a long time, the calfskin of the tambourine becomes soft and concave. Is that normal?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 5 жыл бұрын
yeah -- are you in a humid environment? or, maybe is your tambourine head old? that same thing would happen a lot when i played in miami. i would bring around a heating pad with me to tighten up the head before i played.

I got a question. when you play tambourine in the orchestra and not in the ensemble, how often is to play with your knee on a chair. I mean I know the technique and I used her in the ensemble but never in the orchestra because few things like the conductor said that silly and stuff like that and I don't know where I need to use that. for example, let's take the beautiful tambourine part in "1812". it's 1 8th note with rest of 8th note and then 2 16th notes connect to the same phrase and it needs to be super articuleted, should I use to knee or the fingers? I hope you understand what is my point and I would like to hear your opinion cause I want to "a master of the tambourine" and I want to work as a percussionist and your opinion is important to me. thank you very much for spending your time reading that. i definitely use my knee for tambourine all the time in orchestra. it's not silly, it's the way we play our instruments. so... don't listen to your conductor, it sounds like they don't know tambourine.

Hi, Rob. Could you tell me why, on your opinion,my fingers just slide on the skin of the tambourine instead of "rolling" ?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 3 жыл бұрын
it’s a matter of friction. make sure there is the right amount between your finger and the skin. you can play with different amounts of pressure, change finger speed, and you can try putting bees wax on the head for more friction. good question and best of luck with this!

What do you have on the bottom of you tambourine head? Is it to deaden the head so you can hear the head? The only reason I ask because it is something I have never seen before.
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 7 жыл бұрын
yep it's to muffle the ringing overtones of the head. i just put some gaffer tape on the bottom.

The editing is a real testament to the attention-deficit problem so many people seem to have now. I find the chopping and sound-jarring distracting, but then I already know how to pay attention.

As cool as the headed tambourines are, I personally prefer the rock tambourines. They are more fun for me to play because they are easier to hold and strike. I have a Meinl ABS Duel Alloy tambourine that I absolutely love.

interesting, but am i the only one who can't actually hear the tambourine sound? i have the volume up so i can hear the speech a bit too loud, but i can barely hear the tambourine!
