How to Wash Skeins of Yarn

We take you step by step through the in entire process of how we at Dakota Fiber Mill wash our mill spun natural fiber skeins of yarn.
It doesn’t matter if it’s wool, alpaca, mohair, angora, camel, bison, yak, qiviut, cat, cashmere, dog or blends of any type. This is how we at the mill wash our finished skeins. Note some folks may do it differently this is just how we do it.

Dawn has too high a ph for natural fibers. You want something closer to neutral like Ivory . Once immersed it needs a few minutes to wet down thoroughly . Yes spinning out the excess water saves a days drying time .

I have always opened the skein before washing. Do you find there's any difference in leaving the skein twisted or not?

When washing a bunch, and even just a single, I have found a risk of tangling when opened . Haven’t had that issue since washing skeined. I have also found the skeins are just as clean etc... I do always open the skeins to dry.
