Basic surgical scrub technique! Every morning first scrub of the day HAS to be done this way.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Proper "book" technique requires you to scrub to 2 inches above your elbows, and Avaguard use require you to do 1 hand at a time instead of both hands like I did.
Thank YOU for watching my video! I truly hope that you found it insightful and helpful, if you enjoyed the content please think of SUBSCRIBING to stay up the date with my future content. One of the leading surgeons in our city was sensitive to all of the then-available surgical prep solutions. So, he scrubbed with Ivory soap. Infection Control very carefully studied him, his skin and patients. As you probably suspect, he actually had a lower infection rate than others.

Excellent video! Just one comment on the Avagard technique - I would suggest using a first pump of the solution to 'paint' both the forearms first, then a second to do the hands last. This prevents you from breaking the sterile field if your forearm sweeps go above the most proximal point of your first scrub of the day!

This is so interesting, I’m not planning on working in surgery but I do plan on studying midwifery. So far I’m taking an STNA course and i can finally realize how sterile the hand washing Technique is for surgery compared to the usual “less than 20 second of friction” wash. I was unaware that you didn’t have to wash your hand again working between patients.

You're not supposed to use the brush portion anywhere besides your nails, as it causes micro-abrasions on your skin. Bad for you, and bad for patient. Use the sponge side for the rest of the job. Also, you forgot your web spaces, and you are supposed to scrub 2" above your elbows. In Europe, they are only using the nail pick, and the brush side to clean nails, then they discard the scrub brush all together. It's only a matter of time until we folllow suit.

Can you do an updated video on how to scrub please? AST has changed their guidelines and when scrubbing you aren't supposed to switch hands anymore, you do one whole hand and arm first; then go to the other. I got my A$$ chewed out for not doing it the new way. Want to make sure other students are in the know. Thanks, love all of your videos; they are so helpful, keep up the good work!!

Very good point! I will try and get one out soon and re-label this one the *OLD WAY*....So I have been trying to find information on a "NEW WAY", but can not find anything on the AST website in there guidelines. Well thanks for the instructions! Got a few questions (I'm not trying to be funny. I'm just ignorant) : Why 10 stokes every surface? Does that mean all contaminant should already be gone at 10? Your hands is consider sterile after this kind of wash? Is second wash ever necessary to ensure coverage even if you haven't dropped the sponge? Sometimes the soap doesn't seem foamy enough. With this, does it mean large amount of contaminants are still left on our hands on our regular, everyday, hand wash (not pre-surgery hand wash) even if we're washing in the way CDC recommended?
