the only games i consider time well spent are story driven ones with unique and interesting setting and mechanics, like half life or bioshock. everything else is a waste of time, especially RPGs, since you're wasting time doing boring, monotonous activities just to level up your character, instead of learning some real life skills.

Same. Why be a filthy casual who spends time playing CSGO, or LoL or PUBG. Never was into that. The only online games that I truly ever enjoyed were WoW and Warframe. Why? Because those have story. You have a story line you follow. But then I realised that even MMORPG's are ruined by the MMO concept, and completely switched to offline solo play. I'd rather play solo player games like the Mass Effect series, Fallout, TES series, Witcher, any rpg really, or the games like Castlevania or The Legend of Zelda, you know, adventurous games, that tell you a stroy, that give the opportunity to live through an adventure, save a universe or two, interact with the characters, experience beautiful landscapes...

In other words, if you want to have fun with life, strike a fair balance between work and play; don't be a workaholic, but don't be a gamer that plays all day just to have one moment of a good time (especially with online games). Do your job, do your home chores, do your shopping, and play your games all together in moderation. You don't have to love your job though, just find something you don't hate.

Wanna hear the piece of advice that literally changed my life? I too felt like garbage when playing too much videogames, until I realized they were the sole reason I learned english at a very high level, higher than any of my peers, and without taking any courses (I'm not a native speaker) Then it all made sense, I immediately changed all of my games language to french, looked up the basics online and started playing again all day x) Now, fast forward 5 years I'm fluent in french and italian, almost in german and picking up russian These skills have helped me a lot, got me into some awesome places and landed me a pretty good job, I'm still playing like 2 hours a day and I enjoy every minute of it

I grew up alone as an only child for the first 8 years of my life in a single parent household. My mother always worked, so I stayed alone at home in a furnished, but quiet apartment. To cure my loneliness and boredom, I took solace in my GameCube, playing Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition. Since I was 3, i've gamed for almost 10 hours each day. It gets especially bad if it's a new game that i've never played before, and VERY bad if it's an online multiplayer. Sometimes I feel like my actual life is a mere conduit for me to play video games- that whatever happens doesn't matter, as long as I can play them. I'm 18. All of my friends have jobs, girlfriends, or are college bound...While I sit at home in my room all day, bathing every 3rd day and wallowing in self-pity. I hate myself and I constantly work myself up...To calm myself down, I play a video game. I'm stuck.

Kaden Wolf failed argument playing the deflection card, dangerous/unrealistic working hours proven harmful to health is the fault of a failed economy and lack of regulation. scientific facts regarding physical/mental health are inconvenient to businesses that try to pressure employee's into dangerous hours, and inconvenient to failed economy's where pay is so low in some jobs that people have to take extra hours (which then slows down productivity/health when the brain passes an X number of hours per week).
@astraldragon5483
@astraldragon5483 5 жыл бұрын
AtomicToyRobot the irony being here while some people attempt to argue that any time spent on fun is "wasted time", the same argument can be made against work because of countries like south korea where a work addiction culture (and #1 oecs suicide rates) finally lead to the government stepping and and whipping companies into submission and regulating maximum work hours allowed. too much time spent on fun is causes problems, too much time spent on work causes problems. the key is balance, but in the case of dangerously extreme work hours (that were scientifically proven harmful to health) being required for the minimum cost of living that's a failed economy without sufficent regulation to prevent corporation's from having employee's work extreme hours.

I had a 3 year length relationship. We used to go out every Friday on the first year, so that's 51 days for the first year. Let's say we went out 6 hours average per day so that's 306 hours the first year. We used to go out more time and see each other at college/work, and hang out at anyone's house and sleep together few times the last 2 years. So let's say thats 9 hours average a day, so 9 hours * 365 days = 3285 * 2 = 6570 + 306 of the first year = 6876 hours spent with her. She cheated on me multiple times having sex with her friend. I'd rather spent those hours on The Witcher 3, TES5 Skyrim, RDR2.

As a kid, video games were a rare activity for me. We had one game called Motor Storm and we were lucky to play it once every few weeks when our parents allowed. There was something special about it. On my thirteenth birthday, my parents bought me my first PS3. This introduced me to a wide variety of games. Most of my greatest early experiences with gaming revolved around connection - the thrill of playing with friends and discovering a world one level at a time. I used to ramble on and on about these games with my all friends at lunch breaks. However, there came a time where my friends moved on and stopped caring about video games. Each hour spent training hordes of zombies didn’t grant the same excitement it once had. Nevertheless, I continued to play hours on end devoting my life to these useless games. I now sit, many years later, and nothing much has changed. For the most part, I am still that same lonely kid stuck at home wasting his life away on a glorified video game; living a lie and chasing that high of connection he once felt. In all those thousands of hours spent playing, I’ve begun to realize that I will never be able to reclaim a single minute of it. I wasted over a month straight playing video games and I’m going to have to live with it. I think it’s time for me to go out and make a few stories of my own before my times up. I’m still young, but this is something I wish I’d realized sooner.

Beautiful comment. So insightful. I loved it. I find myself in the exact same situation. At first I would play them occasionally but once I got my own it became more of an obsession. All of my childhood memories, including those of friends, revolve around videogames. I find it even a bit freaky hearing how similarly you and I both came to grow up and self-reflect on our lives now. I know your comment is 8 months old from this one but I hope you've added new, real experiences to your life as I too am planning to do now having been inspired by your truthful comment. @@juanzilla6436 Its very freaky indeed, glad some of my friends still hang out and play games with me, otherwise i would be loner (not counting my gf) especially in corona times when pubs are closed and such here. The worst thing with gaming for me is the feeling of void and emptiness, like the weeks, months even years passed but are in my memory only as mere days, if not hours. Im trying slowly to get my self on track with learning about what i love beside video games, but its quite hard to be honest. Good luck in life kings. Stay strong.

My mom spends several hours a day on Facebook without realizing. But will say I am wasting time on my DS. Social media almost always makes me feel like shit after, not just looking at highlight reels of peoples lives, but the polarizing content and clickbait to get your attention. I often found myself arguing in the comments and just generally getting angry at the shit I saw online. Everyday I encounter a story of murder or theft or someone being cancelled for something and it’s just so toxic to me. Mario, Kirby, etc don’t give me these feelings. Then again, I’m a handheld, single player gamer. I’m not a big fan of the online gaming considering it gives those same feelings listed above. Unless I’m playing with friends, I prefer single player games. The music, art, and gameplay is so relaxing to me and I always feel better after playing. Never felt shame or anger. It’s a relaxation method for me. And because of this I can complete some tasks, and then shut off the system to play another time.

So my answer is not “stop playing games cus its bad” its “get a job and/or a career/education so your free time isnt only games” we’re not neglecting our normal needs, food, showers, etc yet every gamer’s parents think they go under the “addicted” category

It always boils down to "if you're not doing something to make money or make other rich" you are wasting your time. Nothing is more of a waste of time than reading, sports, traveling, pets, tv, movies etc. It's all just a big waste of time. Balance and moderation is everything. Just like with diet and health, you can't always eat junk foods all the time without suffering bad consequences. Video games are something so special to me because they allowed amazing worlds and experiences and journeys to come alive. Games are so much more than "fun" or "addictive", it's what we get out of them. And I get so much out of them than I can quit for a couple of months, try different hobbies, be happy and content, and still feel like video games are such an amazing art form and that making them a part of my life only adds more value to it. That being said, don't expect to play video games all day and feel fulfilled, cause video games only add value to your life, they shouldn't define it. And you shouldn't cope with your problems and insecurities by immersing in them. You should breath through them to find inspiration and value and beauty or just to have some fun, but never let them breath through you. With great power comes great responsibility, you guys, and I'm sure that video games have the power to break lives, but also to make life one of the most amazing experiences ever. That is the magic of the video game art form.

I disagree, as this is highly subjective. For example: I got a friend, who`s building his own model railway. This building stretches across 3 out of 6 rooms that he lives in. He dumps hundreds, if not thousands of € into new locomotives, decorative stuff (houses, trees, bushes, benches etc.) and new railways. He sits there all day long, fiddling around with details and stuff, repaints things, you name it. He pours his heart and soul into this. If it makes him happy, I won`t ever tell him that this would be a huge waste of time. If it makes him happy, it`s not a waste of time at all..

The problem is playing instead of studying the game 1 The problem is not forming a team with people you trust 2 The problem is playing without improving, so you feel effected by wins and losses instead of skills or strategy implementation 3 Games can: 1. Be good for cognition 2. Exploit addictive behavior. You shouldn't play for fun, thats dopamine. Thats addiction. You should game for *The Experience*. Sometimes the experience is fun. But you shouldn't be seeking fun itself, fun is a consequence of it. Art can lend to experience. Education. Many types of gaming. And irl activities. Irl activities are quite similar to gaming, only you need to socially distance now. Winning =/= Skill. But if you never play with a team trying to be competitive, you won't be competitive because of the context not driving forward good experience. For example: Theres a difference between friends forming a militia, and the military. The majority of the difference is from organizational differences, and learning from experience, vs winging it. You should only 'wing it' if its a new game you're grinding to try and find good play. But if you aren't trying to exploit tiny details of the game, you won't be an innovator, just a strong player who will lose to a crafty player. Just because you have good micro doesn't excuse your bad item combinations, for instance. The trick here, is 'competitive games' are not competitive in the ranked competitive mode unless you 1 form an organized learning team 2 study your ass off. The problem with gaming in your case, TooManyMoths, is conflicting values. You value fun, and you value the things that previously lead to the fun. But you don't have the skill of making the fun yourself. So you valued the activities that led to the fun before instead of fun, is the conflict. You can make any match fun trying to coax others into rock paper scissors etc. But chose not to. You weren't trying to have fun. You were trying to feel good about yourself. So your self esteem lowered when you lost, because thats the metric you started to judge yourself by.

He's not trying to demonize video games. He's saying video games are addictive and take time from more productive things. This doesn't make them inherently bad, however it's a very easy and satisfying habit loop to fall into. Personally, I have almost zero self control with video games and was addicted so I decided to cut them out entirely. If you were addicted to heroin, you wouldn't say "Well, maybe every now and then." This has been an amazing decision for me, but may not be for others. My focus has returned and I've learned how to focus on new skills: went back to school for Nursing, learning Spanish, and just doing the things I've always wanted to do. I don't think I would've had the time or habit power if I was playing video games still.

What exactly is a waste of time? Reading a book? Watching a movie? Riding your bike? Technically everything could be considered a “waste of time” so why not just enjoy whatever it is you’re doing for fun? People have hobbies for a reason...they want something fun to do that is a waste of time. Drinking, bowling, billiards, skating, laser tag, board games!! I mean come on the list goes on and on...some people just like video games! Edit: Now there’s a difference between a hobby and an addiction hahaha when something takes over your life and you can’t live without it, that’s a problem.

It happened to me, but I don't listen to this crap and follow my passions. I don't know why someone wants to read a book if they like video games much more, it's not like you become a better human or smarter because of books, it's a different thing to entertain yourself and everyone got their preferences in life. If you would call that addiction then EVERY SINGLE PERSON would be addicted to sonething, like videogames, sports, reading, phoning, chatting or whatever someone just LIKES to do! Enjoy your life, do what you like and don't overthink too much! Ignore toxic people and those, who dislike your hobbies. Life is not about them, it's about you!

As i am older, more mature i don’t really have anything to prove for my time. Your point isn't a 'video-game' problem. Tons of people don't know what they want to do/study/work on. Tons of people swear they'll get round to learning an instrument someday and never do. If it's not video games, it might be KZbin, sports, reading etc. You can't expect to be productive 24/7, and some people fatigue quicker than others. Myself and plenty others are avid gamers - who are employed and/or in college. Also, another thought - the guitarist who practices 10 hours a day might think "what am I doing practicing 10 hours a day?". He might consider that wasting his life. It all depends how you look at it.

It has a lot do with instant gratification. When you finally finish that quest or win a game of ranked you are instantly rewarded and feel a sense of accomplishment. This behavior is very similar to partying, smoking weed, or drinking alcohol. The result is an instant pleasure that you put relatively little to no effort to enjoy. Now compare this to the thousands of hours needed to master a musical instrument and it becomes clear why you and so many others find it easier to rely on video games for gratification; because its quick and convenient. Unfortunately, as is the case for many gamers, we become exposed to instant gratification at a very young age. The only solution is to re-wire ourselves and engage our minds to be more responsive to productive behavior. Masturbating to porn has to be one of the most detrimental of all. Which is why I've since stopped doing it, as it also dulls the mind and breeds complacency. Since I've stopped, I feel like I'm significantly more focused and powerful. As men, our sexual drive is what gives us strength and motivation; If we're constantly depleting it, then we're simply wasting our potential.

But I thought he said frustration is a good thing and video games ruin the sense of working hard, but then he plays video games that make him work hard and says that those games being hard is bad

elida dlr if you tried to forget that this point was your own you’d see that your “applied to anything” logic ignores his point. Of course everything is addictive because we are emotionally creatures, nobody is saying that only certain things are addictive but it’s almost always universally true that things that are easy aren’t worth doing! You should absolutely work smart not hard but that saying is incredibly enabling for lazy behaviour. You should absolutely bike to the store it’s great for your mind and body. That’s harder the driving but it’s smart. The point you miss about the instant gratification argument is that it’s the factor that makes gaming more addicting then doing homework for a high grade in a class you need! Work hard not smart and things like video games and porn give the mind chemical satisfaction without any reality based satisfaction. If not a hindering or crippling addiction due to the instant gratification factor it’s the bias towards laziness, inaction and procrastination. The factor towards doing what you want not what you need. I hope you’re able to consider the points I’m making honestly.

Play Bloodborne for the first time and run into the second boss. Everyone has PTSD from that.

This hits really close to home. I don't play games for 24 hours straight and refuse to sleep or eat, but i do stay up late and procrastinate my goals to play games. I've wasted a lot of time playing video games; time that could have been used to learn to code, learn to write a book, exercise, etc. You only get one shot at life, and it's a crime to waste it.
