Also after using that for tent. I used "Shoe Goop" to seal the seams on all sections sewn with threads. Especially around base bottom floor. Also, spray the sealant Kiwi on bottom tent floor on reverse side bottom, not inside, to water proof that area also.

One more comment because this is a topic we’ve dealt with. Having a cup of water run off a surface is very different than a driving rain storm that goes on for hours. Don’t put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation with inadequate preparation. If you want to test your tent, soak it with a sprinkler simulating a hard rain. Let it dry and do it again, then one more time to be sure.

There is a lot more to it than this. If you have a polyurethane coating ( and you probably do) and you are smelling that wet tent smell( like vomit) then probably the polyurethane coating has aged and is absorbing water. To apply a new coat you really have to get all of the old residue off. The layers of PU have to be put on very thin otherwise it shrinks within its self and doesn’t adhere to the fabric. It is ok to experiment as long as a failure isn’t in a critical situation. We’ve tried reconditioning tents, thought they were good on the first hard rain and had the coating turn to slime two days later. What we have done (since we’ve often had tents that were good but the flys would leak) is make a new fly from cheap plastic tarps. We learned this up in Canada when the heavy rain went on for days. Even with a new tent that was well sealed, eventually it was so saturated it leaked enough to get down bags wet. All the Canadians had tarps and stayed dry. You learn from good teachers.

Use a homemade spray solution... Clear silicone and mineral or white spirit mix... Use a thicker mix with a brush on seams on inside... Cheaper

I'm curious if vegetable oil spray could be used as a moisture sealer? But would like to hear some other thoughts on this? Back in the day they used oils from animal fats.

Do you enjoy sitting in a tent that's gunked up with spoiled vegetable oil and animal fats? Great way to attract insects too.

Does it make the tent sticky after you pack it away and open it up again?

No it does not have any residue or different feel to it. The tent will look and feel like how it originally was.

Does your tent have to be dry to water proof ?!

This stuff is terrible. Remove urethane and apply mineral spirits (GOOD grade, not eco-friendly) and 100% pure silicone calk....3-5:1 on seams, 10:1 on fly and floor, 20:1 on tent wall.
