👍 Your description of the water start was perfect, and as I'd run my own Windsurfing school over 40 years ago and was experienced and totally knowledgeable of giving tuition in each technique throughout the various aspects of the courses which I had on offer. I was well aware that good knowledge of the water start was imperative to be confident in prior to attempting to set sail yourself , particularly upon a wave-board which do have a lower buoyancy volume than the slalom and racing boards.

I love your way to teach. All is very relaxing and your teaching methodology is very good. I love the slow motion and you're slowly voice, is perfect to understand for spanish speaks.

I've never seen the instruction to compact yourself before; and I've never seen the foot/knee/leg dragging exercise suggested. Going to try is ASAP. Thanks again.

In my experience, the GetWindsurfing videos are the best!! Thanks! I have noticed that some other instructors teach putting both legs on the board at the same time (they bent both legs and make themselves smaller, although they do not talk about it (obvious for them?)). So, I am wondering which technique is better. It seems that with both legs, you would need more force to lift you from water. On the other hand, it might be easier to maneuver the board, when both legs are on the board. Next time, I will try to maneuver the board with both legs on the board just to get a feel for different points of sail and the force of the sail. The only disadvantage of one-leg pull I can see is that you need to balance yourself on one foot when getting pulled. This is why they recommend exercising it with a lag drag. I have tried it, but it is challenging so far, especially on a wider board, because your front leg has to be further from the back leg (which is at the center), that is, about half of the board width. Any feedback on which technique is better or easier?

Personally we try to say one leg is better as you can use one leg to swim and stabilise. Also in our experience unless it is very windy most people push the board away from them when using both legs.

I higher winds its easy for me to waterstarts but in low winda with my 99l. Skate and 5.3qm sail ive got sometime problems to get out of the water..because the choppy waves that are pushing the top of the sail down or taking same wind..

@GetWindsurfing Windsurfing Coaching, What is the board volume needed to perform the waterstart for a newbie?
@0uiallo8 жыл бұрын
I am still learning my beachstart but anxious to get a bit further out on the water... I have the habit of jumping on with my front foot first tho, is that an issue when waterstarting? Seems like everyone else uses their back foot. great tips btw. I'm following now.

I really like the video and thought it was quite good. Will definitely practice the leg drag and 'staying small.' I didn't really understand the control vs. power part of the video? Particularly, how it controls the board position. It seems that putting the sail in a 'powerful' position will turn the board downwind and control turns it upwind. Also, it seems that when you achieve the balance between control and power, the centerline direction of the board appeared to be about 30-45 degrees 'downwind' (broad reach) from 90 degrees (beam reach) to the wind. Is that so, or is that my imagination. I couldn't tell easily from the video... When I tried water starting many years ago, I had trouble 1. Floating the sail. 2. Once I did get the sail floating, I never seemed to be able to get in a position to get on the board and the board would not be in a position to try to get up (hence the power & control you spoke of). I just got an old board and plan to get back into, definitely need to learn to water start!

Really happy that you liked the video and found it useful. Let me explain the power vs control part........ By turning the board upwind you will hovels power in the sail, making it easier to control. As you turn downwind you will have more power and lift in the sail, this is sometimes a good thing but not if you can't control it. The angle you have the board pointing in relation to the wind will vary depending on a few factors...... Wind strength, Equipment & user ability. I hope this helps a bit

Sorry, but it looks like she standing on the groud. Deep water, bud reaching bottom with the foot. It's impossible to clear sail without ground foothold.
@GetWindsurfing8 жыл бұрын
In this video Danielle is not touching the ground. She is fully swimming to recover the rig. If you struggle with this try swimming the equipment towards the wind to encourage the sail to sit on top of the water and make it easier to recover

Get that sail flying well first Damian, and some good steady breezes too help. It makes it a lot easier. Don't try too big a sail, and keep the boom slightly lower too on the mast (gets you nearer the board, and the pull up pivot point is easier to find). In the water, once the rig is is flying, it will support you too in the water. A bit of fitness helps cardiovascular, as does lifting small-ish weights above the head. I use about 5 to 10 Kg and one arm at a time, in the winter months (when I am too chicken to get in water of 5C !). But don't wreck your rotator cuffs by doing too much. Windsurfing is about technique, confidence, and a bit of stamina. It has taken me about 2 seasons to get reasonably competent at the WS. It is hardest when the wind is gusty, but lots of fun as you have to pick your moment. Don't worry.. Keep trying and keep a sense of humour.. It's a mad sport, but I am addicted to ride things. So far, windsurfers are the most exciting thing I have ever ridden. 30 mph+ and getting quicker. Now, where did I put that prototype graviton engine...? (Lost it somewhere in the garage amongst my old windsurf equipment...)
