How to wean kittens - weaning kittens advice

Weaning is a very important part of a kittens development, it is the transition from their mothers' milk to solid food. If you have kittens and are indenting to sell them or give them away, it is best and highly recommended that they are weaned first.
In natural habitats, mother cats would bring food & prey to her kittens to wean them, but with domesticated cats, that process often falls on the owner - the provider of food!
Claire visited a local cat shelter, who have a lot of kittens, to learn about weaning kittens and share some cute kitten footage and share what she learned!

I just found this video, when my 4 week old kitten is nearing her weaning time. For me, working as a vet, I don't recommend weaning kittens at 4 weeks, 5 week old kittens usually are a better age, because their digestive system is better, and its safer. Also, if your kittens don't finish weaning for more then a week, take them straight to a vet!

Thanks cause I`m at wit`s end trying to get them to eat/lap up the combination of kitty food + the powdered milk with water. One of four got it immediately. The other three don`t have a clue. If mama is in the room, she makes a dash for any of their food, so it is a bit like a circus. I tried separating her and after a few minutes, she began wailing. It was real fun - at 3:15 AM. I think the neighbors appreciate us being here. I had to re-unite her and keep her at bay while I worked with each kitty separately on my lap. So this video advice was helpful. I`ll try your advice and separate mom again for a while. Do you think they will just naturally make the connection between the food on my finger and the bowl and what to do? They didn`t seem to the first two days.

Both my cats are spayed to. But here in Norway we wean kittens when they are between 8 and 16 weeks old. My little girl was 12 weeks old when I'd got her. So this is very helpful. Hugs from Norway.

How do you deal with a kitten that shows absolutely no interest in milk, wet food, treats or anything else we offered? She is about 10 weeks now and her siblings started transitioning to wet food weeks ago, but she resists it entirely. We've seen her drink water from a bowl, so she knows how to use her tongue correctly, but as soon as we push a bowl with milk or food to her she doesn't even sniff it! Her mom is still nursing her and she's gaining a good 10-20g a day, is energetic and suuuper cuddly, just doesn't want the monchies. We're honestly kind of lost.

i cant even get past the first step, the kitten shows no interest in licking mlik or mlik in a dish, i basically have to force feed the kitten with a syringe.

If you can, don't wean your cat. The same that applies to us humans also applies to cats: the more the better. :) But in need, this video shall be quite useful. :)
