I've played shortstop my entire life. I"ve played at the college level and have been a gold glover. I use two in the pinky, the reason I do it is because of the feel. I also do it just for holding on to the tag. Other then catching line drives, pop ups and, throw downs. I never really close my glove. The only thing that might change when going traditional is the wrist angle. Which when it comes to fielding can be a huge difference, but as you said if you're a good fielder it shouldn't really matter as 99% of fielding is footwork. I believe that it shouldn't really matter for a middle infielder because we never should be closing the glove on transitions or a routine GB.

Yes. This. We should almost never close on routine GBs. Your hand should be in there trapping or you should be popping a transition out into your hand most of the time.

2 in the pinky with my hand farther out than most like your final tip stated. I have shorter fingers but wide palms, and 2 in the pinky just feels way better. Especially with the natural angle of the glove when fielding. I've been doing this for about 15 years now.

I wear a Marucci Oxbow 11.5 3 in the pinky and very loose, for third base and (sometimes, but not often) corner outfield. Seems crazy but it’s comfortable and an almost effortless close, plus the extra hand sag gives a good extra but of reach

Love your videos. I just bought a new for glove for me and my son to teach him how to play catch. I saw this video and I started wearing my glove 2 in the pinky and it feels way better. As an outfielder, I wear normal aka each finger in each slot. The key for me is I only squeeze with thumb and pinky, creates a huge pocket especially once you have a ball formed into the pocket. Another thing is I curl my thumb inward, which I know majority don’t do this but works beautifully with diving catches. It holds the ball in the glove and less likely to pop out when your glove makes contact with the ground. This style is very unorthodox but after many many years of tweaking and trying different things, I’ve had the most success with this.

I used to wear the glove traditionally just normally with my index in the pocket instead of out, but then I tried out 2 in the pinky, no one really ever told me to do it it's just something I was messing around with and I noticed right away 2 in the pinky is just better. but then about a year later I started putting 3 in the pinky and it's just so much more comfortable than 2. I'm an outfielder so it helps a lot you're gonna benefit your performance and plus it's not even gonna hurt when you catch anymore unless you're catching the ball on the palm. just my thought great vid bro

First basemen here (lefty so all I can really play in the infield) personally for my glove (44) I feel like surprisingly I get a deeper pocket with traditional. Also it gives me more feeling of the pocket and I feel like it gives me more control for scoops. I completely agree with you tho when playing outfield I always go 2 in the pinky

I agree. I have shorter fingers and putting 2 in the pinky makes the pocket feel deeper to me and less balls pop out of my sons UA 31" catchers glove. I believe it makes this glove funnel balls to the pocket better. This appears to be the case with his new HOH 11 1/2" fielders glove as well but it is not fully game ready yet. I have also found that for kids or those with smaller hands its the better way to break in the hinge. Kids tend to want to squeeze their thumb and forefinger and this forces them to at least squeeze thumb to ring finger. At least this is the case with my son. It also keeps my hand a bit further out of his gloves so my finger tips line up better with where his land

If you're more comfortable with 2 in the pinky, but need that shallow pocket, check out the NP pattern Rawlings gloves. They're designed to close thumb to ring, regardless of how you want your hand. I have smaller hands/fingers so I've always been more comfortable with 2 in the pinky. Shame I didn't find the NP pattern until longer after I was done playing.

i found my 44 Pro softball glove is only comfortable to wear 2 in the pinky, but a lot of Wilson gloves and Rawlings gloves are pre-shaped and have a great feel for traditional. either way its just preference

When I pitched I was a traditional guy but I felt like if I had a come backer I wasn’t able to field them as well. I switched to 2 in the pinky made my glove have a bigger pocket and was able to snag come bakers a lot easier.

I play center field in mens slowpitch and i go to in the pinky. i find its easier this wat especially when you are diving for the ball. it seems like its easier to keep the glove closed when you hit the ground. and the glove sits higher up on your hand so you get a bit of extended reach as well.

Im a catcher but I also play 3b/OF so I have my glove broken in 2 in the pink. One weekend I got spiked and almost broke my pinky so I couldn't catch/ squeeze the glove. I came up with the most botched solution possible. I stuck my ring and middle finger in the pinky slot and had my pinky on the outside of the glove. Like if there were a 6th slot in the glove my pinky would have been there. I have a picture of me playing catch in the outfield with my swollen pinky sticking out. It was hilarious!

I totally agree, but there’s people out there who could be wearing their glove better and don’t know it. I see this with a lot of outfielders who have never given two in the pinky a shot. They become more confident and comfortable by switching over they just needed to be educated on why it matters

I’m pretty sure on some outfield mitts they don’t even have a finger stall in the index finger. It’s just straight padding, it makes you go 2 in the pinky. Same thing goes for first base. Some of the mitts make the index finger stall so small that they force you into going with 2 or 3. All about preference cause I’ve done both

A pitcher dislocated their finger from having it out of their glove and diving forward to catch a bunt that popped up in front of the mound when I was playing third base. Didn't stop me from having my finger out though, but it is something I always think about.

You forgot one of the most important parts of the glove. The thumb loop. As a coach I've seen many, many players who either do not use the thumb loop, it's untied or not adjusted properly and glove is flopping around on their thumb.

finger back loops are a big factor on how you wear the glove too. some gloves are made so the finger back loops fit 2 or 3 in the pinky really comfortably without even adjusting them, and don't go tighter, to encourage players to wear gloves that way (found that to be the case on my 44 Pro softball glove)

I did notice that most MLB players (that i’ve seen) have a lot of their hand sticking out of their gloves. I just assumed that, like me, trying to find a glove to fit an xl-xxl hand isn’t easy. Most sporting goods stores i go into, i’ll find maybe 2 gloves i can comfortably fit my hand into.

So here’s an interesting twist; I wear my standard fit glove two in the pinky and it works well. But I wear my Pedroia fit glove all 5 fingers in the stalls and it works a little better. So I my own experience (And your own experience may differ) I think that the way to wear a glove depends on three elements. The glove fit, the player position, and player confidence. My two cents…adjusted for inflation.

I play the infield straight up because I feel like fielding a grounder with 2 in the pink feels off. I think the rotation of the glove doesn’t help, as I’ll take a ground ball more on the fingers compared to the web, so straight up is better for that

It’s totally up to you! It’s mostly about what is comfortable, try two in the pinky for a couple weeks and see how it goes. The first few days will feel a little odd so give it some time

I put 2 in the pinky and still close with 1 hinge, thumb to middle finger. 2 hinge close feels weird and when the glove gets broken in it looks silly when the glove sits thumb to pinky.
